"I toured Atria Crossroads Place. The bedrooms were smaller there so it wasn't as spacious as some of the others. The community was very clean. The staff who assisted me there was very good. The community was small, but they were fine. They didn't have everything the other places have. They showed me the dining room, the private dining room, and the country kitchen. The nice thing they had there was they had like a snack bar that was open all day so that you could help yourself to food. That was something that others didn't have, so that was nice. The dining room was nice. They have a nice library. Everything is just a little smaller."

"We went to Elmbrook Village. It was a limited contact, but everything was fabulous. It's a beautiful facility, and the people were good. It's one of the places that we're gonna consider as we go forward. It's on the list of possibilities. The rooms were beautiful. Everything was beautiful and brand new. It's an incredible facility. The staff was very helpful, polite, and accommodating. Everybody was good. They did some baked goods for my mother, and everything was great. The outdoor space was very nice."

"It is lovely. The apartments were nicer than any other place we had seen. The layout was very good. The bathrooms were very large with a lot of grab bars and safety features. Architecturally, this was the best place we saw. There are a lot of big windows, the ceilings are high, the hallways are wide and that makes a huge difference more than other things that people might be looking for. All the residents we talked to had wonderful things to say about this facility spontaneously which I thought was pretty interesting. Everybody looked pretty happy. The staff who helped us with the tour were excellent. They were well-informed, very understanding, and very interested in feedback and preferences. The dining area and the food were excellent. "

"Colebrook Village at Hebron was very nice. We had lunch there, which was just soup and a sandwich. The people were very friendly and very nice. There were many people who were using such devices, so that turned me off a little bit. But the facility was lovely, and the accommodations were lovely. The other thing I like about Colebrook is that they have a lot of people there that I know. So I wouldn't be going into a place without knowing anyone. So that was a plus. It was friendly and very accessible. There are some walking trails, and it is very near to my primary doctor, CVS, and a supermarket, and that's a plus. The person who works there brought me meals from Colebrook, and the food is very, very good."

"My mother moved into Masonicare at Mystic. Everyone's friendly and professional. It's reasonably priced. The facilities are gorgeous. They have a full calendar of activities. They have chair yoga, a saltwater pool, a movie theater, happy hour in their pub, and a nice shop where you can pick up basic necessities. My mom's very pleased. She gets one meal a day. She gets dinner every day and for the rest she's on her own. It's nonprofit, so their rates are much lower than in other places."

"I've been to The Elms Retirement Residence. It is unbelievably beautiful. They have a lot to offer and it's just a wonderful place. They were very accommodating. They answered all our questions and got back to us when they said they would. They keep it well maintained. There is a courtyard and transportation services where they take them to places or their doctor's appointments on their bus."

"The Golden Years is an old facility and most people there had low income. Their staff was friendly and receptive. They looked after their people. I would say that one thing they needed to address was to have an air-conditioning unit in there because when old people had respiratory problem, they need air that was easy to breath. Other than that, they were good and they do keep enough heat during the winter. "

"Sheltering Arms just didn’t have the best levels of services. It wasn’t quite on the level of assisted living, and that’s why it just wasn’t working for my mother anymore. I can say that it was a good place; she just needed more services. When she first went there almost four years ago, it was fine for her, but by the time she left, it just wasn’t enough for her. It was a good facility. They’re very clean; it’s just not for her at this point. They don’t do that much for people. The staff and I talked about that, and they were the ones who told me I would either have to get more assistance in there or move her, because they could not provide the services that she needed. The staff was very good. They were very nice, but they didn’t have quite enough, so they couldn’t give her the assistance with dressing, changing, bathing and things like that. They weren’t understaffed; it was their level of care. I knew that when she went there. Mom just got a little older and deteriorated a little more, so it just wasn’t right for her toward the end. She would’ve stayed there a few more years, but she couldn’t. It just didn’t have the services that she needed. They had daily activities as well. Because the high school is close by, they have volunteer students that would go over and do things. "

"Sachem Homes is an assisted living facility. They provide meals and the residents either have their own rooms or shared room. They have 24-hour staff. It caters to smaller community. The meals are pretty balanced. They have household activities that are available for members that want to do things. The place is small and almost everyone knows each other there. "

"Our tour at St Jude Common was ok. It's an older facility that they're trying to update. At the time we were there they were putting in a new heating system and security. I just noticed a lot of things about it being rundown and it needs to be updated, though they're doing it. We sat there watching the residents interact. There's a lot of low income there and some that I really wouldn't feel comfortable around my mother. The apartment we had looked at was empty, but the staff stated that they're going to replace the carpeting. It has a lot of wear to it including the building. The maintenance guy was walking through with other people as they were trying to update the heating system. The place where they would eat, the chef came out while we were there and handed a menu, said hello, and walked back into the kitchen. I didn't see anything else wrong. I thought it was a decent place as far as the people who work there."

"The staff did seem under-trained, plain old people, most were impolite and moody. The facilities themselves are just houses/condos that are poorly reconfigured for the needs of their occupants. The amenities seemed basic too, it gave the impression of a daycare where only basics were handed out to the occupants like medications and food. The facilities weren't as clean as you would expect either, many seemed dirty, with stains on carpets and dust/hair accumulating on floors. "

"My mother was taken to Complete Care at Harrington Court. This is where the hospital released her. I didn't like anything about it. They need to improve the staff. The staffing is hideous. The food was awful. The response to someone pushing a button to get help going to the bathroom was awful. Their administrative people had no response. We didn't get the admission papers sent to us for filling out until after we had checked out. Two weeks later, my mother contracted COVID while she was there. She was put in a less sterile and less protected environment while she was in isolation. It was just a horrific experience. The people are not happy there and are very unresponsive. The food they feed you is almost like if you were to go to prison. I didn't see any activities being offered. They have a physical therapy department. A couple of the people that we worked with there were okay and trying their best. It was all covered by Medicare."

"It's a frightening experience to put a loved one in a nursing home especially for Alzheimer's. I cannot tell you how wonderful they have been. The staff on 3 South always go over above and beyond for their patients. Rooms could be perked up but it's the care I care about. The tenderness and care they show is heartwarming. If I have a question, it's answered. If I worry they calm me with reassurance. Thanks to all of them."

"We had an in-person tour of Creamery Brook Village. We looked at a double bedroom, but the space outside was the biggest thing. We like the fact that we could go out and I could walk with the dog. My husband could take his tricycle in the gardens. We were very impressed. The only thing against it for us was the distance from where we and our family lived. The big positive about it is that it's not in the middle of the city. The staff was wonderful. They offer all kinds of good things that my husband could enjoy, as he's handicapped."
