Wayne, NJ is home to 53,369 residents, of whom 19.2% are ages 65 and older. Seniors here have access to leading-edge health care services at St. Joseph’s Wayne Hospital. High-ranking Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains is less than 4 miles away as well.
Nursing homes provide around-the-clock supervision, medical care and personal services for people who can longer manage at home. Skilled nurses, nursing assistants, specialists, therapists and social workers coordinate services according to each resident’s needs. Such extensive care makes nursing homes cost more than other senior living arrangements. Nursing home costs in Wayne are quite expensive, according to the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey. Here, a semiprivate room carries an average monthly cost of $11,771, compared to the average American cost of only $7,756. Individuals who do not require such high levels of support may consider home health care or assisted living as a more affordable and suitable alternative.
This guide discusses the costs of nursing home care in Wayne and throughout the state. It also compares rates for different senior care options. Finally, it lists local resources for the city’s seniors and their families.

My mother is in the Llanfair Care and Rehabilitation Center dementia ward. The nurses are caring. They’re limited to one floor because the dementia patients are a flight risk, but they go down for physical therapy if they need it. They give them showers on a schedule, and they try to keep everything as normal as possible. They bring in a person to play the piano, which calms them, and they have movie days. They’re very good and very caring. It’s very challenging dealing with a population that can’t regulate their own behavior, but they’re patient. The food tastes good, they season it, and they’re able to accommodate choking hazards. They keep their place and the patients clean, they clean the rooms, and they change the linens. The place is attractive and modernized.

My Mother-in-Law Amelia C. was a Resident for 4 years. We were SO Happy we chose PH for her.
After 4 years in our home, a mini stroke and the onset of Alzheimer’s made our decision to find a place for her to get the care we could no longer provide.
The Facility is Amazing. The cleanliness, food & accommodations are outstanding!!
But their Staff was the Miracle we could have only hoped for.
We never met a more catering, giving and loving group of people.
We were there almost every day during those 4 years and had the pleasure of seeing their interactions With Emmy but with all of the residents on her floor and other floors.
With so many Residents needing many different levels of need, all were Blessed to be in their care.
If you are making the tough choice we had to make, rest assured this would be the best one you could make.
The entire Staff remains always in Our Prayers. Knowing Emmy was in their Loving Care to the day she passed, gave us the peace we needed.
Thank you to all of you!
You were and will always be Emmy’s Angels. I know she is now yours.
Love

Not sure who I am more angry with this facility or Aetna. My sister was admitted here after being denied multiple times by Aetna for the facility the hospital staff recommended. During Covid sent her further away from family than she had to be and not the appropriate facility for her medical needs. Staff’s communication on her care was poor at best. Mo seemed to be the only person working (he provided facetime when he could and for maybe 2-5 minutes) and was stretch so thin he couldn’t provide the best with so many task he was given. For a nonverbal patient with a trach and respitory issues as well as a previous incident of her heart stopping at the hospital because her trach had not been cleared in a timily fashion, you would think they would keep a closer eye. Not here! My sister came in progressing well including the day the nurse called very nonchalant to inform my mother my sister had suddenly passed after a nurse walked pass seeing her arm in the air but not checking as to why and a PCA not long after found her nonresponsive. How does a patient come in on a good track to coming home and just needing to gain strength and weened off of the trach and vent, getting an excellent report during day shift to deceased not 3 hours into night shift. I’ve waited months to post this review in hopes communication and request my mother has done would be met appropriately. Unfortunetly that isn’t the case at all. I work for a hospital in another state and know for sure so much of her care was inadequate and her death is greatly due to negligence. For those that has received great care I’m happy for you just wish my sister was given the same. The one star is for the one star employee Mo.

This place is disgusting ever since taken over by Spring Hills. My mother is here and today as I was visiting her, she wanted to go lay down on her bed and take a nap. When taking her from the wheelchair she was soaked with urine. This is just the first thing today. Then when I went to ask for help to get her washed and changed the attendants had been going back and forth as to who should clean her up. Then when I went back to her room to get her in the bathroom the handle for the door was broken and sharp. What if her or her roommate would have tried to get into the bathroom, they could have cut their hand. Then one of the attendants did come to take mom to a restroom down the hall from her room. And brought her back cleaned up and in fresh clothing that I took out of her closet. The bedroom is dirty, the floor is disgustingly sticky. I’ve seen the man that cleans the floors sitting around wasting time. A few times I found him in my mothers room just sitting there texting on his phone or watching TV. NICE JOB. The bathroom is not useable cause you can’t open the door since the handle is broken. Her dresser and closet in her room is falling apart and on half the room is painted and has wallpaper on it. This place is a mess since the new Spring Hills takeover. If things don’t change they may not be getting another check from me till things are taken care of. Or maybe I will need to find a new place. I would never suggest this place for anyone or even a pet. BAD JOB NEW MANAGEMENT. Maybe someone needs to take a whole new coarse on how to take care of the elderly and those with disabilities. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN YOUR CHOICES. I have complained to the first person in management (social worker). Let’s see how soon things get taken care of. DISGUSTING PEOPLE, DISGUSTING !!!!! Very upset over this.

My husband is a resident and has been there for 2 years. It looks very nice but don’t be fooled! I have wanted to move him for a long time but he was in a facility that was even worse so I am afraid to try another facility.
Since my husband has lived there, his diabetes has gotten worse since they test his sugar after he eats when his sugar is high so he gets more insulin. His clothing has all been ruined by their housekeeping staff, and they never put anything away for him so that every time I visit, I have to clean up his room. The food isn’t bad but he never gets what he orders on the menu, and what is worse, he gets things he is not supposed to have, like sugar and soda with sugar, even though I have labels I typed that say "diet coke". In addition, I end up taking all the patients menus to the kitchen every Sunday when the new week starts because no one picks them up from the nurses’ station.
One of the reasons I chose this place is that my husband is a smoker and not many facilities allow smoking. The smoking hours were cut to 4 times a day for 30 minutes which is not enough for him so he is now being discharged (thrown out) because he "broke the rules" by smoking off hours, even though all the smokers do the same thing.
Recently, my husband developed sores on his foot that have continued to get worse and his foot became hugely swollen. The facilities nurse practitioner that visits one every week or so misdiagnosed him The powder and antibiotic she ordered made it much worse, and when I brought him to a vascular surgeon outside the facility, I was told he has an inclusion, but the swelling was actually from an infection, and it was not a fungus which is why the medicine did nothing. Now I have to take him to get an angiogram as well a an infectious diseases doctor, all the while looking for another place for him to live.
The worst thing is that I tell them what the issues are to help my husband and the other patients, but they just do not care.

Communication is not great either.
His room is very clean, and that’s good. The staff is very nice, caring, and attentive. There are no issues with maintenance and upkeep. They just need to improve on communication with the families and the quality of food.

For anyone who needs to find QUALITY care for their loved one in the West Essex / northern NJ area, please – for the sake of your loved one AND you – just go straight to Green Hill. My father was neglected and almost died in another area facility. He was transferred to Green Hill and is doing so much better. They know how to deal with dementia patients – with dignity, respect and true medical care, even during this year of pandemic. The staff is considerate and friendly, the food is good, and their standards during the pandemic are at par with hospital level – and I know, because my husband works at a hospital. The facility looks like, and we learned, was a former hotel/respite site during the 1940s. The inside is spacious, and with social distancing, that’s a GOOD thing. My father is limited in his activity level due to his dementia, but our visits have been SO encouraging. We almost lost my father, so believe me when I tell you, this facility was divine intervention.

Our family member was not cared for or treated well. Their urine bag was so full it looked like it could burst. When our family member got sick and threw up and alerted the staff that the bedding and clothing were soiled, instead of changing them, the staff just placed a towel over the soiled bedding and clothing and left it. When we arrived for a visit, our family member was very upset about sitting in their own throw up. Only when we complained did someone come and clean and change our relative. They were also an hour late with administering pain medication which is critical for someone on hospice care to keep them free from pain. We removed our family member from this facility and brought them home. I would not recommend this facility.

I’ve been in Lakeland Health Care Center nursing for almost 2 years now. I finished my rehabilitation and then the pandemic hit so now everyone’s trying to get out of here.
I had an accident just over two years ago and I was put here for rehabilitation. I’m fine now, everything is okay and I’m walking on my own. I’ve been given a list here that I’ve been calling trying to find someplace to go to.
The rehabilitation was good. Medically, they take care of me. You’re pretty much allowed to do what you want here, even though it’s limited what you’re allowed to do. Their only stipulation is that you’re not allowed to leave and they don’t want people leaving and going around the neighborhood or whatever. That makes visitation pretty limited.
I guess the facility is fine and they take good care of it. They have people here that help you with certain things. Once a week we get visits from outside social help. If you need something, they get it for you and that’s pretty much it. They’ve got two people per bedroom and I share myself, so that’s not a problem.
The food is okay some days and some days you just don’t want to eat it because it’s not something that would normally be on my diet. It’s not the best but it’s also not bad.
The staff is fine and you get friendly with a few people. There’s been a lot of change over but as far as the personal nurses that treat me and the doctor that normally takes care of me and all that, they’re all fine.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Wayne, NJ
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
