Hyattsville is a member of the AARP Age-Friendly Communities Network and is just a few miles east of Washington, D.C. and less than 30 miles from Baltimore. About 9.6% of the 21,169 residents are aged 65 and older. It is home to several world-class hospitals and medical centers, such as Johns Hopkins Hospital and the University of Maryland Medical Center, which provide innovative and specialized care. Hyattsville itself has over 20 licensed nursing homes offering a range of services to seniors requiring assistance.
Nursing home care involves licensed health care professionals attending to seniors with demanding medical needs or chronic medical conditions, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. Those with limited mobility or who are unable to live independently might also require this type of care. The cost of care in Hyattsville is about $1,000 higher than the state average. For those who can still manage most of their daily activities on their own or seniors with supportive family circles, home health care and assisted living options might be more ideal.
This guide compares the costs related to nursing home care in Hyattsville and in nearby surrounding regions. It also offers a sampling of resources that seniors might find useful.

Sacred Heart Home was awesome. It’s an incredible facility. It’s a top quality nursing home. If you have to place a parent in a nursing home, that would be the place you would pick. My mom’s room was immaculately clean. The level of care was just amazing. Somebody was in the room like every 15 minutes to check on her. Her medicine was on time like to the minute. Mom was dying and she did pass away, but somebody was always there.
My mom’s diapers were changed immediately if there was an accident. Somebody was always checking to make sure she was clean. They would bathe her and wash her hair. It was more than I had ever anticipated. They would stay in touch with me. I live a good hour and a half away, so if she looked like she took a turn for the worst, they would call me immediately, so that I could get there in time. It was a very topnotch facility.

My aunt moved into Hyattsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. It does not smell bad. The staff seems to be nice to her. But it’s a very old building and the carpet is worn. They need to pull the carpet out because it is badly stained.
She has a roommate, and their room is pretty nice. It’s a small room with one bathroom. It looks clean. She has her own dresser where she puts her clothes. Other than that, there is no extra furniture in there for anybody to sit down, so when I go in to see her, I have to sit on her bed. To me, it looks more like an unkept hospital. That’s what it reminds me of.
My aunt likes the food. She said they gave her too much. She doesn’t eat a lot, but they put a lot of food on her plate and so in her mind she feels like she has to eat it all, which will make her sick. She has to make a request and let them know these things, but she seemed to be reluctant to do it. I had to step in and mention the fact that she’s not supposed to have all this stuff on her plate. I’m so far away that I can’t do too much on a daily basis. I have to ask for what I need or request them to do something. No one’s pushing anything. They are just sitting around waiting. I had a meeting with the business office to settle down the financial part of it. The person I’m supposed to be meeting with had an emergency and no one called me. I’m in D.C. and it was a $38 ride. I was on my way there when I got word that the person was not going to show up. That’s inconvenient for me and that was very inconsiderate.
My aunt is on Medicaid/Medicare. Unfortunately, with nursing homes, they’re going to take all of her money and then give her $100 a month. She says it is not good, but they’re not giving me any other choices. I think they’re going to get $800 for that space. I’m not pleased with her being there overall.

My brother is in Arcola Health and Rehabilitation Center. I won’t really call them attentive, but due to everything, everybody who’s been there, and what’s going on, I can understand. They could also give more feedback to the families with what’s going on, considering you can’t actually go in any time you want to see everybody, and you have to make an appointment. And now you have to have COVID tests several days before you visit. That’s all fine; I just feel that the communication as far as the healthcare and the services needs to be filtered down to the family members a little bit easier than you having to call to get an update on your loved one. It’s only two levels, the reception area was really small, and the administration section where they log people in is also small, but the people are nice. It’s just that if you don’t ask the question, you’d never get the answer. It’s that type of place. And if you don’t know what to ask, you’ll never get an answer. My brother is in good health and good standing, so the nurses are probably taking really good care of him.

We had a family member admitted here after a major surgery and he needed some pretty severe rehab to be able to walk again. Well, they work with them here every day and if they don’t want to get out of bed and exercise…THEY MAKE YOU DO IT!!! Not in a harsh way or to be mean, but to help get you back to moving. I cannot say enough good things about this rehab team and how dedicated they are.

This is a very, very small place but it has a huge heart for their patients. I observed one of the sisters who was simply doing her chores and very busy at the time. I could also see that there was a mother and very young child visiting talking loudly someone in a patient’s room, and you could hear the child telling his mom that he was hungry and wanted some crackers from a vending machine. The mom told the child several times that she did not have the money to buy them and she was sorry. Just then the sister walked into the room and surprised the kid by giving him some peanut butter and cheese crackers. I thought it was so touching to see someone be so kind to a stranger.

Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home does not smell like old people, it does not smell like antiseptic, it does not smell like a hospital, and it does not smell like anything. The place is immaculate. It is so clean. They have a huge staff. I think they have 164 beds, and they have a staff of like 200. They have a lot of people attending to the patients. I went there at different times of the day, and every time I went, my mom was clean, happy, and healthy. They do not just leave people lying around in beds getting bedsores. I like the way they get them up and out into the day room where they can interact with other patients — or other residents rather — because they do not treat them like patients. They treat them like people who live there. The staff is very attentive like they are there all the time. They are very caring, and they treat the residents with respect and affection; I love that. My mother is very happy there. She’s well cared for, and I’m happy. She has dementia, so she does not do too much of the activities, but they do have games. They go on outings even. It is a very nice place. I am very comfortable leaving her there. The only thing I do not like about them is the parking situation. They have a parking lot, but it is very small.

They’re just so helpful and responsive. Initially they did have activities to keep him busy and activity, but then he tested Covid positive; after that, they had to take him out of activities. I haven’t been able to see their facilities, but I think he’s happy. I’ve been in the reception area, but I can’t go beyond that because of the Covid restrictions. I could see their gym, and their gym is lovely. It’s very convenient to where I live. It’s like 20 minutes away. It’s reasonably close to the hospital.

Small room, waited and waited constantly after many requests, for nurses to deliver meds, ice packs, etc. Food was not great, bed was uncomfortable. The staff would stand there watching me arrange the padding and pillow (which was the worst pillow I’ve ever seen in my life) on my bed before I got back into it instead of doing it themselves (I was using a walker to be able to get around and in a lot of pain so not in the best position to be making up the bed while hold myself up on a walker). Not their fault but had a roommate with dementia who kept me awake all night, but they would keep her tv on and/or lights making it even harder to sleep. I was there for physical therapy and got a whole ten minutes of it. Even their staff said the therapy would be hit or miss. Crappy place. They probably need more staff and they need to train the staff they have better instead of throwing tchotchke crap at you hoping that their "concierge" service will seem impressive.

My father was in Arleigh Burke Pavilion for rehab. The community was very nice, and the care that my father received was very good. The staff was attentive, it’s a nice place and very clean. It’s a good community and I personally have no complaints. There were some lapses in communication and stuff, but that’s to be expected sometimes. There were some times when my sister didn’t get any information she needed. The coordination between doctor’s offices and financials could have been communicated better, but we’re unsure if it’s solely because of Arleigh Burke Pavilion or the doctor’s office or a combination. Overall, it’s a very nice community and they seemed competent. Dad had a very nice room, it was very functional and very pleasant compared to other places. It was non-sterile compared to some other communities I have visited which were like hospital rooms, his was a little more comfortable appearing and more home-like.

I was here for rehab for a hip problem, and only lasted 9 days. They short changed me with diabetes and cardiac medications and I had to call my own doctor to raise hell. I was only allowed to use a shower twice in 9 days and the women’s showers didn’t work and I had to use the men’s side. The food was terrible and 90% of the time I ordered food delivery. I was left for 9 hours with zero pain control and the call light was always ignored. I finally called a cab, hobbled out to the front door, left and was taken up to Howard County General Hospital ER and treated properly so I could go home. I reported this facility to the Maryland Office for Care and Compliance of such places, and the report I just received was pages and pages long about all of the violations the inspectors found. I wouldn’t send an animal here! One night, I had to use a wheelchair and take myself out to the nurses station and found a nurse sound asleep on one of the couches in the day room. No wonder they weren’t answering the call light ! This place needs to be closed down IMMEDIATELY !!!

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Hyattsville, MD
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
