Miami and the state of Florida have long been known as a haven for senior citizens. Many retirees choose to spend their golden years either wintering in the area or residing in Miami full-time. In fact, more than 16% of the city’s overall population is made up of seniors aged 65 and older. The comfortable climate and waterfront views are likely one of the top reasons seniors choose to live in the Miami area. Other factors attracting an older population include renowned medical centers, such as the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, as well as an array of nursing homes that provide full-time care for seniors.
Nursing homes provide a high level of medical care and continuous monitoring for seniors who need it. Care is provided by skilled nurses and experienced caregivers who are on-site 24/7. According to the Genworth Cost of Care survey for 2020, the cost of nursing care is generally much higher than other types of senior care. In Miami, seniors can expect to pay an average of $9,095 per month for a semiprivate room in a nursing care facility. This cost is more than double that of home health care and assisted living in the states. As such, seniors who don’t require such a high level of care may want to consider these less expensive options.
This guide includes information about the cost of different types of senior care in Miami, as well as resources that are available for older adults living in the Miami area.

The hospital sent my husband to Miami Jewish Health. Surprisingly, the place was very nice, and I’m impressed with the care that they’re giving him. He’s only been there a couple of days now. They feed him, and he seems to be resting well. He’s still very weak. He became very unresponsive last week and ended up at the hospital to the hospice center at Miami Jewish Health. I’ve only been there twice, and the staff seemed very attentive and very caring. Medicare pays for the hospice care.

Floridean Nursing Home was very convenient for my sister and for me. I visited the place, it looked OK, and it is close to where I live. It looked very clean. The people looked like they’re well cared for. I had an opportunity to see and talk to some of the residents, and they were quite satisfied. One of the ladies there gave us a tour of the different area of the place. I was impressed with the attention of the personnel to the visitors and patients. It looked like a very comfortable place for the residents there. I had the opportunity to talk briefly to two or three of them, and they were quite happy to be there.
The rooms have two beds, and there is a bathroom in each room. They have single-bedrooms, but the lady who was giving us the tour told us they were for private patients who paid a significant amount of money for those rooms, and they looked excellent. In general, it looked clean, and the attention to the residents was good, according to what I saw. They have a very roomy dining room with three or four chairs per table. It’s very comfortable. They have a courtyard and a gym for the people who need rehabilitation. The staff was very polite and very knowledgeable, and she answered all my questions. She explained to me how they function. I was very satisfied with the place. It has high ceilings and wide halls in the different wings of the building. From the outside, it looked like an old building. It is obvious they have maintained that building very well. It is clean and very spacious everywhere.

They have a doctor on staff, some RNs, LPNs, and nurses aides, and they have given her physical therapy. We haven’t had any problems with the staff. They seem to be pretty nice. They give her a bath and stuff like that, and the place is clean. I think that we’re getting our money’s worth because they’re taking good care of her.

Feeding, change diaper, request Rx necessary for any illness (cold, oxygen skin etc). CNA’S are over worked. The food is horrible not just my mom complains but others in dinning area. Wheelchairs smell awful from urine. Overall there is 24/7 nurses. Monday-Friday doctors give proper care. It’s predominantly a Hispanic/Spanish. Overall I do recommend this residence. It is 2 minutes away from my home. Activities are good. Birthdays are celebrated. Rooms are 4, or 3 per room. I think there’s only 3 private rooms. The TV is on all day in dining/living room area as it’s only 1. There is a small garden area which is nice.

My experience with this facility is a mostly possitive one. I never had any problems with the facility itself. It was always clean and presentable. I also never had any problem with the staff of this facility. The staff were almost always there when my grandmother needed them. I also enjoyed the surrounding area of this facility. If my grandmother ever had a problem with any one of the staff members the facility operators would take care of the issues and replace that staff member with another person who usually ended being someone that my grandmother liked very much. The amenities within this facility were mostly of high quality. I enjoyed the food sometimes when I visited and though it was usually bland, it never really tasted bad at all. If I had any other relatives in need of an assisted living facilities care, I would recomend this place to them Immediately. Overall I was very satisfied with my experience here.

They spent so much time on therapy, I didn’t really have time for activities and I like that because I wanted to be coached into better health and they really concentrated on it. They had a wonderful equipped facility. I’ve never seen one so well equipped and managed. They had equipment I’ve never seen before. They’re very good about applying it to my problem. My mother was a resident of this nursing home. I visited her there every other day for approximately six years. The facility itself was suitable for use as a nursing home. I mean, it was not a modern building as I would have preferred, but it had everything a patient could need to be comfortable. There was even an adjoining park where patients and their visitors could go and enjoy the fresh air. The building was spacious, and the amenities plentiful. There was always a lot of activities for the patients. A lot of times the patients were treated to field trips; such as the fair and the movies. I went with them a few times. I noticed that the patients were well looked after and cared for on these trips.I got to know the staff quite well; meaning the nurses and CNAs. The majority of the staff were pretty decent folk, and seemed to have a genuine concern for the patients there, but there were a few who had no business being in a nursing home. My mother was a combative patient, she didn’t trust a lot of the staff, and at times she didn’t want them to touch her. Not to clean her. She didn’t want to take her medicine most times. I know this must have been hard for the staff to deal with. I walked in my mother’s room one day, and found a CNA physically fighting with my mother. My mother was screaming for help and no-one came to check on her. The CNA told me that my mother kicked her in the breast, and it hurt. On other occasions my mother ended up with injuries that nobody could say how they happened (including a broken finger). My mother passed a way a few months ago, and I feel like I should have found a better nursing home for her. Miami Gardens Care Center staff can use more training in how to handle combative patients.

Adult day care ($1,300) is a good option for seniors who require some assistance and supervision during the day but are well enough to live independently.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Miami, Florida
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
