A low cost of living, friendly community and an exemption on Social Security taxes make Rochester an underrated retirement destination. The Flower City is home to more than 21,000 seniors, who can make health a priority with nationally-ranked Strong Memorial Hospital nearby. Fishing is plentiful thanks to Rochester’s location on Lake Ontario, and Turning Point Park allows seniors to walk alongside the Genessee River. Getting around the city is cheap on RTS buses, which offer seniors unlimited rides for $1.50 a day. Photography fans will enjoy visiting the George Eastman House, while animal lovers can visit Seneca Park Zoo, and both offer discounts for seniors. Sports fans can take in Rochester Red Wings baseball games, where seniors get discounted admission.
To help seniors discover the most senior-friendly locations around the country, Caring.com conducted a new study, “The Best and Worst Places for Senior Living.” The Caring Senior Living Report analyzes and ranks 300 cities and 50 states on the quality of senior living in that area. The cities were graded using 46 metrics across five categories: Health Care, Senior Living & Housing, Affordability, Quality of life, and Transportation.
