Rochester Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Rochester:

Older Adult Services

Address: 55 Troup Street, Rochester, NY 14608
Phone Number: (585) 262-7060 x4020

The Catholic Family Center is a nonprofit organization that provides a range of services to seniors to help them safely age at home for as long as possible and avoid an early move to a nursing home. The program is funded by the state of New York, Monroe County, the U.S. Administration on Aging and donations from the local community. Services offered include subsidized home care, adult day care, housekeeping services, minor home repairs and home-delivered meals.

Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 400 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607
Phone Number: (800) 888-6770

This program is funded by the U.S. Departments of Energy and Health and Human Services. It gives priority to those over the age of 65 and people with disabilities from low-income households. Contractors carry out an audit on the property and determine which services will improve the home’s energy efficiency. Services offered include repairing or replacing weather systems, installing insulation in walls and ceilings, repairing doors and windows, addressing moisture issues and weather stripping. There is no charge for any of the services provided by the program.

Meals on Wheels

Address: 2180 Empire Boulevard, Webster, NY 14850
Phone Number: (585) 787-2233

The Meals on Wheels program allows seniors to safely remain in their home and ensures that they receive healthy and nutritious meals regularly. Public contributions fund the program, and volunteers deliver all meals. A registered dietician plans the meals to meet the nutritional needs of seniors. Volunteers notify staff members if a senior doesn’t come to the door or something seems amiss, and the staff contact family members or the relevant emergency services. There’s a small charge for each meal, but financial aid is available for those who can’t afford to pay.

Lunch Club

Address: Multiple locations
Phone Number: (585) 753-6280

The Lunch Club program is funded and administered by the Monroe County Office for the Aging and provides a nutritious meal and social engagement for those over the age of 60. The Lunch Club is offered at senior centers throughout the city, and many of the centers have additional social and recreation activities. Meals are charged on a sliding scale depending on household income. Those who are unable to pay can enjoy this service for free. For seniors unable to drive, transport is available, and a small fee is charged for the service.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
