We visited the Sapphire Center for Rehabilitation & Nursing of Central Queens. They're very diligent with COVID testing. Every visitor has to do a rapid test before they're allowed to go in. I liked the facility. It's very clean. The nurse and everybody were very friendly. They separated everything because of COVID. They put the patient first. They also have a rehab unit. They did a little revamp of the whole place. We went to a unit where they quarantine new patients and that used to be a community center where they eat or hang out and stuff like that. They separated that part.

My father stayed at Sapphire Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing of Central Queens. The staff members were very nice. I was able to visit, but we're not allowed to go in. It's a building, and in front was a little waiting area that had chairs, and it looked pretty nice. We didn't have any other access to anything else. It was not good because there's lack of communication among staff members and family. We never got to speak to the doctor who was seeing my father, and we asked numerous times to speak to him. Only the nurses who were actually overwhelmed spoke with us. We had a lot of issues with Sapphire. My father was missing his teeth because the hospital that he came from lost them, and they don't allow a dentist to go in there or my father to go to a dentist, and that was a problem. They kept losing his clothes. People would tell us that we could pick up and wash his clothes, and other members say we couldn't, so it was a back and forth thing. Any time we went to pick up his clothes, they would give us other people's clothes. When he was released and I went to pick him up, since we couldn't go in, they brought him down. His clothes were in a big plastic garbage bag, and it looked like he was a homeless person, and I complained. When we went through his clothes, 70% was not even my father's. They're very unorganized when it comes to clothing. It shows you that they don't have somebody who really focuses on the patient. The only positive thing there was the recreation people were great. During Covid, we were able to call my father and get in touch with him. The person that helped us out with the paperwork was really good, but the nurses and the administrator were not very helpful. I sent a complaint to the New York Health Department, and no one got back with me. I complained to the administrator, and he got back to me and he apologized and thanked me for this feedback. Especially with Covid, the administrator needs to make tough decisions and he didn't, so I wouldn't recommend Sapphire because of that. The staff was very polite though.

When visiting this facility, the staff was very nice to me. It was during Christmas, so they wanted me to play some Christmas songs for the elderly people that lived there. Without even asking, they treated me to many refreshments and they thanked me heavily for my volunteer work. It was an absolute pleasure performing for the elderly. It was a very clean environment and it took many precautions for the safety of those who lived there. For example, they made sure my cell phone was turned off before I entered into the building. They made sure that I also sanitized my hands it was no joke. My favorite parts about the whole experience was the fact that I felt like I was welcomed there instead of just treated like someone they needed to entertain the folks living there while everyone was on a break. Usually, I feel as if I'm being used, but not at this place. They heavily enjoyed my presence there, as much as I enjoyed my experience there, and they didn't take me for granted.

The location of the home is pleasant and the staff were very nice, as well as helpful. There is a park directly across the street where some pateints were enjoying the great weather, which I liked since the park was walking distance for my grandmother.

My grandmother was a resident of Flushing Manor many years ago. She passed away in their care about ten years ago. As someone with advanced Alzheimer's Disease, she could not speak or recognize anyone in the last three years of her life. She was bedridden, almost entirely unable to eat, and could not react or respond to any stimulus. When we would visit biweekly, my grandma constantly had bed sores that my mother (her daughter) would notify the staff about. She looked malnourished, but this may not have been the staff's fault. However, while moving my grandma to give her a bath one day, they dropped her and broke her leg. Because of my grandma's advanced condition, she did not complain of pain with her leg, and by the time doctors had realized what had happened, she developed gangrene and needed her leg amputated from the knee down. The only reason I can possibly give this institution a score of 3, however, is that I believe progress has been made to the institution in the ten years that passed my family's ordeal. My girlfriend's father suffered a near death experience this past December and was in a hospital ICU for nearly a month. When released, he was sent to Flushing Manor for rehabilitation. My girlfriend's family said they were extremely pleased with the environment and care that he received, and that the facilities were clean and orderly. They were able to nurse him back to health with the care and professionalism lacking in my grandma's experience.Ultimately, I would recommend that caution be taken when selecting this nursing home.

This facility is a nursing home and to Chinese/Asian people it would definitely be convenient (if you live nearby or don't drive) in terms of location. Because there was a Chinese manager but she kept changing the rooms and at first it was a little annoying but that's minor compared to the care we received. So, every time I was there my grandmother was always in a different room. My grandmother stayed at this facility while she had advanced stage cancer with later spread into the blood (leukemia). A nurse helped us push the bed-like wheelchair t to the larger sitting area because she didn't want my grandmother to stay lying in the bed all day. She wanted to help and it was a kind gesture. Another nurse taught the family how to give foot massages to my grandmother. We had to ask for permission to obtain certain things and there was always someone cleaning the facility. While my mom slept overnight the nurse gently woke her up in the middle of the night to help her change sleeping position to get more comfortable in the reclining chair. Again, she didn't have to but the nurse was kind and caring. Food was very restricted because of my grandmother condition, and the nutritionist/dietician told us what she could or could not eat and the dietician always sincerely asked for an update on how much my grandmother would intake. Everyone was always willing to help. The night before my grandmother passed...My mom was about to go home but the doctor warned us by saying oh, it seems like she might pass in a day or two, is anyone going to stay overnight? My mother was said that she will stay and as the doctor predicted my grandmother passed that following afternoon. They took her body downstairs into the waiting area for the person from the funeral home to arrive and on the trip down we passed by the kitchen. This place was definitely not the spotless clean but it was average clean. The kitchen smelled okay, like mushy foods in the making. I would recommend this place more for locals.

It was with great trepidation and anxiety when my father fell at home and had to be admitted to the hospital and then the nursing home for 3 weeks. My brother recommended a facility named Flushing House in New York. Although it was far from where my parents lived, a distance of 100 miles, it was the first choice my brother decided on. On its website, flushinghouse.com, Flushing House is described as an independent and assisted living facility rated highly in terms of senior retirement, staff, amenities, with computer access, excellent dining choices, and convenient accessibility. When we went to visit, the description did not disappoint. There is a rooftop garden where residents can enjoy the sun and roof views of Queens and nearby surroundings. There are one bedroom and studios available, with visiting nurses available when needed. Security is available 24/7. One difficulty is parking availability, but then again this is New York City. My parents decided that this is a good temporary bridging choice between assisted living and nursing home. They have stayed there for seven months now and the staff is very accommodating. They would rather live in their own home, but for safety's sake, this is the next best choice.
