I visited this facility

I was very impressed with Brookdale Monroe. It was very nice. The people were very nice. I liked that it didn't have too many residents. I like the fact that you had your own bathroom. The dining area was very nice. I also like the fact that the Alzheimer's and memory units are separate. There are a lot of girls that work there, and they are very nice ladies. But unfortunately, they had a bad habit of speaking their foreign language in front of the residents. My mom, like a lot of other people there, could not hear well at all. She couldn't understand why she didn't understand a single word these people were saying. I told them that I thought that if they wanted to speak among themselves in their language, they needed to go to their break room or outside because it was not fair to the residents. It's very upsetting that they don't understand what's going on around them. They said that some people have a coffeemaker, so I'm assuming you just bring your own appliances. But you could always go to the kitchen and use the microwave. They have a very nice area outside to sit, which I like. There were a couple of different porch areas with nice tables and chairs underneath the tree. The staff was very personable, knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to share whatever you asked. The lady who was in charge of the food came out, greeted us, and gave us copies of their menu. It looks quite substantial.

Brookdale Monroe is a really nice place. The tour was excellent. The gentleman I talked to was really nice. I liked the people I spoke with. It was very clean. The people seemed happy; I really liked it. It was a really nice and clean place. If you have money, it would be a great place to put your loved one. They seemed very caring and very clean. I like the people, and I like the ratio of people to your home care. I give them that; it was a really nice place. The rooms were clean and nice size. They didn't have any double rooms. They just have single rooms, and it was nice. It's one of the nicest ones I've been to. I would like to put my mother-in-law there. The dining area was a very nice open type area with the kitchen off to the side. There was a couple of ladies that were just sitting in there eatting a snack or something. I'm around dementia people all the time, so I understand having to explain everything 30 or 40 times. They seemed to be patient with that up there. I like that. Some residents were trying to do crossword puzzles. There was one that was just walking around. I'm not sure what other activities they have. They have a TV room, but they're allowed TVs in their rooms. They have a little exercise area there for them, where they make them walk slowly on a treadmill and stuff like that. They have a little sewing class. They actually have some kid toys that they seem to like to sit and play with. I would love to put my mother-in-law there, but I didn't have that type of money.

Sterling House of Monroe came as a referral from Caring.com. I think it was fine. There seemed to be a lot of residents there; however, it just wasn't what I was looking for. Nevertheless, the staff was very nice, very accommodating, and very thorough. The place seemed small, but they did have activities. They offered rooms, but I was looking for more of an apartment situation. They don't want the residents to stay in their rooms, but I wouldn't want to be in that facility myself. The facility was nice, but just not anything outstanding for the price. I think it is expensive for what you get.

We looked into Sterling House of Monroe. It was close to where my mother resided in her own home. However, we found out there was a Sterling House of Oklahoma City, which was near my brother, so we put her there. The Monroe facility is clean and small, which is what my mom preferred. The staff was extremely helpful. They were very good about telling us that if we decided to have my mom in Monroe, MI and later on decide to move her closer to a family member in Oklahoma, there would be no changes in fee schedule or services or any of that unless it was called for. We were really impressed with the consistency in this organization.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

This facility really cared about my grandmother. They knew how stubborn she was and that she would try and leave if she could possibly escape so they kept her very engaged and kept an eye on her. The staff was wonderful, thoughtful and always there to help. The facility isn't exactly the most beautiful but I think they did well with what they had to use. When my grandmother fell and hurt herself a few weeks before she passed away she was severly cut and bruised and they felt terrible about it and expressed a lot of concern. It was nice that they cared enough but they knew it wasn't something that could have been prevented. The facility had lots of field trips and different things people who were staying there and visiting could do. They did field trips to zoos and museums, and they had a beauty parlor their patients could use. The food was pretty good and they made sure that everyone had something they liked so the patient wouldn't skip out on their meals. They had weekly crafts, bingo and other interactive activities to keep people from staying in their rooms all the time. They also allowed for you to decorate and buy things to make your room feel like home. Altogether our family was pleased with how our grandmother was cared for.
