My dad is at Dulaney Valley Assisted Living at Hunt Valley. The number one reason why we chose it was because it was affordable. My dad had no insurance whatsoever, and he had a very small 401k. The second reason we chose it was that they will accept Medicare after his money runs out, so he won't have to be moved to another facility, which is very difficult to find here in Maryland. They've been very helpful. We haven't been there because they said to give my dad time to settle in, but they've given us a call every other day to give us an update on how he's doing. It seems like they are very patient with dementia patients. All the staff there are trained to work specifically with dementia patients. The staff are very caring and very informative. Any questions that we have, they're able to answer them for us, and reassure us that he's doing well, he is assimilating, and he is talking with the other residents, which he didn't do here at home. It is not a huge facility. It is basically a colonial home with eight bedrooms, and they have up to 13 people. The staff just takes care of them, so it's like a homey type feel to the place. They have a physical therapist that comes in and works with all the patients, they have an on-staff doctor that is there, and they have a nurse that is there for giving out medications. They said they had activities. Other than the physical therapist, they have another kind of therapist that comes in and sort of gets them back into their regular lifestyle of moving, living, and making sure they can do certain things. They have outside soft deck furniture, they have a sunroom, and then they have a huge backyard for walking around.

I toured Dulaney Valley Assisted Living at Hunt Valley for my mother-in-law. The facility is a little bit more on the smaller side, and I was expecting more. But once I've learned about the primary goal of the facility, I think it's very adequate. People with more advanced age and memory loss don't really need to run around and do activities, so this facility is more suitable for them. It's very clean and well organized, it looks like it's all caught up with all the state regulations. All of their facilities had railings, their bathrooms were very clean, and the staff was very nice. My temperature was checked when I entered as well. I'd say that it's very well-run for its purposes, though it doesn't work for us right now, but maybe a few years down the road we'll look at it again. The person who gave the tour, Wanda, she's an angel. She's been doing this for 38 years, and she's teaching the staff how to assist people with dementia. To me, she's very professional and calm, confident, and soft-spoken, so I'm very fond of her. I would take better care of the grounds and put more flowers or maybe more sitting benches around there, but I love the environment and the people.

The staff at Dulaney Valley is excellent to work with, and it was a good place. It’s a small group home, and everybody has a roommate except there are two private rooms. They have a nice size dining room; I had been there when they had breakfast and lunch, and it was a very good meals. They had bingo and other stuff. Price is very good as well as the staff.
