We use a compensatory approach. A modified communication style to stimulate the resident’s understanding, interest, and trust. Helping them adjust to the environment so it’s supportive and not a hindrance. Simplify activities to the just-right challenge level so that the activity is neither too challenging nor too simple. We maintain routines and use familiar supplies that engage our resident’s long-term memory. Making activities as multisensory as possible to capture interest and spark long-term memory. The sense of smell adheres especially strongly to long-term memory, so if doing an activity such as “travel trivia” and the goal is for residents to name famous beaches, before engaging residents in the discussion, pass around suntan lotion for residents to smell. This will likely help those with dementia better retrieve memories of going to the beach.

Our resident's health and cognitive functioning assessments are performed by the resident Delegating Registered Nurse every 45 days after admittance to the facility. Along with daily/weekly care observations noted by certified nursing assistants.

That also means avoiding patterned plates and tablecloths as well as minimizing decorations and condiments on the table that might cause unnecessary distraction. We are also flexible with mealtimes and give plenty of time to eat without being rushed. With that in mind, our staff greet residents and engage them in conversation before, during and after meals – even if residents are not able to respond verbally. When possible, we sit and eat with residents and offer assistance throughout the meal if needed.
