I toured The Mansions at Decatur Senior Independent Living. Everything was pleasantly clean. The room had a balcony, which I liked. The few people that I saw seemed to be nice. I just couldn't afford it. The staff who gave the tour was very informative. She contacted me even after the tour. I saw the dining area. It's nothing extravagant, but it's nice. I didn't observe any activities though.

Mansions at Decatur I moved to the Mansions in February 2025 due to some medical issues that I expected to require an extended recovery but healed more quickly than expected and was able to terminate my lease early by providing a two month notice. I weas the second youngest person living there and I would say the average age is 83-86. Generally, the residents at this location are very friendly and welcoming. and I do miss them. They are the stars here. However, there are items I’d like to comment on: 1. Internet – after moving in I found that the provided internet is via WiFi only. Not exactly what I expected from “internet included”. I feel the WiFi is inadequate, slow and not secure (passwords are not changed regularly) and as is true for all WiFi, the signal speed and availability fluctuates significantly when I do use it. It is a facility wide implementation and not via hubs/routers hard wired in each apartment. If you stream video or tv, you might consider getting your own internet service and equipment to overcome latency or connectivity issues. 2. Chef prepared meals – if you have special dietary requirements, good luck. While the menu appears lovely, the delivery leaves much to be desired, at least for my tastes, and is often carbohydrate heavy. Items such as turkey bacon were not available for several weeks; turkey sausage was available for a few weeks but not generally so – turkey breakfast meats are not available on weekends or whenever a buffet style service is employed; butter, jellies, pepper, juices, yogurt, coffee, creamers (which I don’t use) are from time to time not available for 3-4 days to weeks on occasion; sugar free desserts are non existent and the availability of similar ice cream products are hit or miss. Sunday dinners are “boxed” items only and need to be picked up from the front desk (I suggest you get them before lunch service as they are not refrigerated until well after service). AND the times shown on various menus don’t properly reflect service times but rather dining area times, so generally subtract 30 minutes for a better reflection of service end times. From discussions with long term residents, it appears futile to discuss these issues with the head chef or executive director so I choose not to do so. 3. Housekeeping – this is “lite” housekeeping and you need to put away any items on vanities or kitchen counters or they will not clean them; also, you’ll need to pickup area rugs/bath mats if you’d like them to damp mop non-carpeted areas, and does not include dusting of any areas. I learned this from a housekeeper who did an excellent job but they’ve left and the current staff does not seem as thorough. So, make sure you find out when your bi-weekly cleaning is scheduled and pick up and put away items otherwise, you might get your toilet cleaned. 4. Maintenance – nothing seems scheduled and while you may be told HVAC filters will be changed, you will not have any paperwork left in your apartment or posted on your door to indicate this was in fact done. No regular pest control service and while I’ve only encountered a roach on occasion, others have commented on ant or roach issues which don’t seem to get resolved promptly. Unless you are in your apartment, any other maintenance or service request won’t have any paperwork trail left for you either. I’m lucky to live on the first floor and don’t require daily use of the elevators. These have been down from time to time but thankfully the front and back elevators are not out at the same time generally but that is a possibility. If you have mobility issues, you may want to get on a wait list for first floor units only. While some of these items seem trivial, when your paying $4K to $6K plus per month for independent senior living, I guess I expect much more. If you expect little, you probably won’t be disappointed but as the saying goes “buyer beware” applies. In addition, the corporate owners do not meet with the residents and I suspect the issues above and others are true through out all the Mansions communities' in the Atlanta area and elsewhere. I now live in a "regular" apartment and cook my own meals at a significant savings per month. So if you're really independent, perhaps look at other options.

The Mansions in Decatur was a lot more fancy. It was very pretty, elegant, and was more like a very high class hotel. The furnishings and things were very pretty, and the staff was very, very nice. The rooms were typical, but they were larger and roomier. They made very good use of their space without putting in hallways. For instance in their two-bedroom, they had a connected shared closet; you could get from one bedroom to the other by walking through the closet. Some of the models had the washer and dryer in the closet too, while some of them had it in a pantry area in the kitchen. They had full kitchens, and I think they were pretty spacious for the two bedrooms; the one-bedroom was not quite as much though. I was very comfortable there the whole time. I also enjoyed the food. It was pretty good. We had a philly cheesesteak sandwich, sweet potato fries, and a Boston cream pie. It was definitely a large enough serving for an older person, and I don't like spicy and heavily seasoned foods; it was not. I would assume that's probably aligned for most older people.

Our visit at The Mansion at Decatur was really great; that's why we picked them. It's completely independent. My mother has everything that she wants like a full kitchen. They offer everything and have all kinds of events. They go out on trips, have day trips and night trips, bingo, Bible study, and all the things that she wants they have. They offer three meals a day, and the staff is fantastic. There's a shuttle and include all utilities like the phone and the cable. Cleaning service is also included. Each apartment has a full-sized washer and dryer.

The Mansions at Decatur was great. The rooms were very comfortable, very nice, and spacious. There were one- and two-bedrooms. It's a very well-designed and comfortable place. The staff was really nice and had many activities for the residents.
