Elk Grove is the southernmost large city in the greater Sacramento urban area. Home to 173,000 people, over 11% of whom are seniors aged 65 and over, Elk Grove maintains a quiet community life in its relatively small downtown area. Every first Friday of the month, local seniors join the many families in Elk Grove for a community art walk outdoors, which is almost never rained out in the generally mild and warm Sacramento-area climate. The Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center is one of two major hospitals on Bruceville Road that offers age-related medicine on its campus. Seniors who need help getting around can make it as far as the downtown Sacramento transit station on Elk Grove Transit, followed by a connection that can take them as far north as Roseville on Regional Transit. Both transit services offer dial-a-ride and discount fares for seniors with valid transit ID.
Home health and homemaker services in Elk Grove cost local seniors an average of $28 an hour, or $5,434 a month, according to the 2019 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. Seniors elsewhere in the nation pay somewhat less than this for equivalent services. Nationwide, home health workers charge an average of $23 an hour, or $4,385 a month, while homemakers charge an average of $22.50, or $4,290 a month.
Note: Home care cost data wasn’t available for Elk Grove, so data for the closest city, Sacramento, was used.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Elk Grove area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

We loved the details such as the background checks they do for everyone they send to your home. They not only take care of the person but they cook, clean, run errands – all a major help. The down side? They have been wildly inconsistent with who they send out. Which means my “day off” isn’t a day off because I can’t leave my family member with a stranger the first time they come over.

Home Instead provides in-home care services for my husband. He has to be bathed and dressed. We basically need somebody in the home to do light housekeeping like washing, changing his bed, cleaning his wheelchairs, and that type of thing. They try very hard to meet our needs and find a person who is able to take care of my husband, but they said they lost a lot of workers with COVID because people didn’t want to work going in homes and so forth. They’re trying to build up their staff again.
Tomorrow, we’re having a new gal who we never had before. We’ve not had a caregiver for longer than a month. We’re probably on the fourth one now. It’s just not consistent. It’s disconcerting. My husband been paraplegic for 13 years now, so we’re used to getting a get a good care worker and that you really love. After two or three years, they go on to something better or just leave the business.

We’ve been using Ally Independence for the last couple of months for my dad. They make him dinner, wash dishes and clean the bathroom. My dad is very comfortable with the caregivers and they were great. Theyre caring and my dad really likes both caregivers who helped him out. They’re excellent. They’re very accommodating. There was one night that the original caregiver could not make it and they easily made a replacement with no problems for that night. It was very smooth and seamless, and I will use them again for sure. They bill twice a month.

We’re using Partners in Care. The biggest things they offered has been good assessment and good recommendations for what I need to have for my friend. The staffing on all the shifts has been good. So far, all the staff people we received have been excellent. They’re just aides, not nursing care like home assistance. They help with meals. They help clean up in the kitchen, bathroom, and his room. They change his bed, do his laundry, take his medications to him (they don’t give him his medications), and help him with transfers. He’s got to be able to do most of the getting up out of bed and into the wheelchair himself, but they assist him with that on standby.
We’ve got two shifts a day with a different person for each shift. We have four caregivers who come back repeatedly, but we still have a number of new people coming in. The big advantage is that if someone can’t make it, I have to either cover it or find a caregiver; they provide that coverage, which to me is a huge advantage. We’re doing two four-hour shifts, seven days a week.
The pricing is a little bit on the higher end of the range, but it’s been worth it. The fact that I’ve not had to worry about all these things has made it very worthwhile. They keep me up-to-date on the scheduling and all those things.

Sometimes Partners in Care are backed up and I’ve asked them on occasion to increase the time for the person caring but they seem like they’re overextended sometimes. But right now, they got mom a person who is willing and able to take care of my mother. At the beginning they were sending people that were really young and she could not relate to them that much but now she got somebody that talks to her and so forth and helps her out a lot. She is finally happy because it is somebody that can be there a lot. I’ve requested additional time from Partners in Care before from their caregivers and a lot of the time they say everybody is scheduled out. They’re good but they’re not great.

The caregivers are really good. We like both of them that come right now. Their scheduling and billing is good. Shelly is the owner and she’s great. I LOVE Interim! They have been great for my family. When my father was starting to get ill, we decided we didn’t want to put him in a home. We want to keep him at home and we felt he would do better this way. On the weekends we take care of him but during the week when we’re all working, we have somebody that comes in and helps us.
I absolutely LOVE our caregiver who takes care of our father. She is like part of the family. I trust her beyond my wildest dream when we’re all gone and need to do things. She helps us and I couldn’t ask for anyone better. She washes him, gives him a bath, showers him, makes him breakfast in the morning and lunch in the afternoon. She’s right there to make sure he’s safe when he gets up as he has to walk around and do things and just make sure he is not doing something on his own. But it took us a little while to find the exact one that we love now. We started out slow and we started adding more days. It made it at the beginning difficult but once we’ve established a routine, it’s been fantastic. Now she’s full time with us. I like that it’s consistent. I don’t have four or five different people coming and each time somebody different came, I had to go and be there and make sure everything was okay. Interim is great. They have been God sent.

Elk Grove Home Care Resources
Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Elk Grove:

Applications may be made online, in person or by phone with the Sacramento office of Habitat for Humanity.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
