"My aunt stayed at Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton. She was in memory care. They were accommodating. Her room was comfortable looking. She had a shared room and she had lots of space. She was only there for eight days. We didn't get to use all the amenities, but they had a beauty shop, they had an onsite doctor, and they had meals and snacks available during the day. I thought it was a reasonable value considering its memory care. The staff was always responsive to what I needed. The dining area was spacious. You had rooms for wheelchairs to move around. People were able to eat in groups. They were very nice. Another thing is that they were also segregated by gender, so it was not crowded at all. The facility looked great. In memory care, they were clean and well maintained. I was there almost every day during my aunt's stay, and there was always somebody with a mop cleaning up and they clean up right after the meals. I thought they did an excellent job. From what I looked at, the food was adequate for what people were capable of eating. They made accommodations for people who could not chew. They're very flexible. The only drawback is you got to be firm about what's the base price and what are the add-ons. It's somewhat all-inclusive, but you have to ask about what all the expenses are."

"My friend moved into the Regent of Newport News. It has a bedroom, living area, and bathroom. I've seen the dining room where they have barbecues, and the outdoor areas where they brought a bar from Ireland over. They don't serve alcoholic drinks. They use that as a backdrop for their big TV room. My friend told me that the food has been excellent. He's had two meals there. He was in the hospital for four months and couldn't stand the hospital food, so the fact that he finds this food appealing is a lot. It's spotless. I was very impressed with its cleanliness. The staff are all so friendly. They seem to want to make the residents pleased with the service that they're getting. The executive director came to my friend's old apartment, and they physically moved the furniture to relieve me, because I live in Florida and I drove up to Newport News. I just had so much to do in such a short amount of time. The executive director drove the Regent van to the apartment, loaded up all of his friend's furniture, and took it back to the Region of Newport News. I thought that it was really special that he personally did that. And they don't have separate nursing fees."

"Harmony on the Peninsula was a beautiful place. My husband and I looked at their assisted living and the rooms were nice. The staff seemed nice, and the place looked impeccably clean. They have a big common area, there are craft rooms, and lots of activities, too. The dining was nice. It was a big open space and they have dining after-hours where you can order something. It's just expensive, probably the most expensive of the places we have visited. As we walked around, the staff were very friendly, greeted us, and said hi to us. The person who was showing us around was a little snooty. We were like, "This is very expensive so we're not sure" and she said, "Well, not everybody can afford to come here". Maybe she was just trying to be realistic with us because we had given her our financial information."

"My wife is in Harper's Station Yorktown. They care about her. The staff is very good. They have a licensed nurse, and she takes care of her and makes sure she gets her medicine. She's an eater. They fed me a good meal. It's a brand new facility, so it's perfect. They have plenty of activities for all the residents. It's just that my wife is too far into her dementia, so she doesn't participate. It's a lot of money for sleeping and eating."

"Karolwood Gardens Norfolk was clean. They were helpful. It had good access for handicapped people. It was a basic home for senior citizens and the staff was friendly. When I looked at it, it wasn't worn down. It was well taken care of. The maintenance was good. I looked at the surrounding areas and just thought that I wanted to be there and it would have been safe for me to be there. They spoke about the place well. They weren't like salesmen. They told you like it was. I just didn't eat the food."

"Harmony at Harbour View was very, very nice. My sister and I joked about wanting to go there ourselves. They had a lot of things for the residents there. They had excursions, they had a movie room, they had a library and a craft room. They had a happy hour a couple of days a week and things like that. It was just very nice and I thought my mom would like it. The rooms were nice. This is a new place, it's only like seven years old. The rooms were a nice size, even the studios. I like the bathrooms, the bathrooms were nice and big that if she's had to be in a wheelchair, she can manipulate with no problem. I didn't have any food, but the menus looked very good. What's the most interesting with the assisted living was the fact they give her her medicine and she could do rehab or physical therapy there. They have all those facilities there. The staff who gave the tour was very nice, very informative, and she has done some follow-up calls. I like her a lot, she was very, very helpful."

"We toured Commonwealth Senior Living at Churchland House and I liked it. It was very nice, the staff was the one who gave us a tour and was very helpful. We saw some of the seniors and they seem to be enjoying it there. The rooms look nice. I wasn't too impressed with the studio or the small room suite, only because it wasn't quite what I thought. The bathroom didn't look as big as I thought for someone who might be in a wheelchair, but the next size up, the Deluxe Suite was very nice. And they have their own little garden where they get their vegetables and herbs and stuff from. That's something that the seniors or the residents work on. And they had a big TV room, and they have grounds you could go out on. I was impressed with those places. Everything looks good, everything looks clean, there were no smells and nothing like that. The dining area was very nice, and if you want, you can go eat with your family. But they also had a separate place you could go sit with your family because their seating was a little more limited for guests, but they had another place you could go and sit with your loved ones if you wanted to have lunch or dinner with them. They were very good."

"The staff at The Gardens of Virginia Beach have been helpful and caring towards me. I continue to see staff handle the residents with care and kindness. Staff answer and provide solutions to my questions. This assisted living seems to be clean and have seen personnel cleaning rooms. The Gardens also have a beauty parlor with knowledgeable hair dresser. Also provide service for washing and drying clothes. Towels were neatly folded when returned to residents room."

"My uncle is now in Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall. It's been great. When you get in the facility, everybody's just really friendly, which I appreciate, because nowadays it's so hard to have somebody say "hi" or "hello" or even smile at you for that matter. Everybody is just smiling, and they all acknowledge the guests when they come in. My uncle is on the second floor, so I actually hang out by the rail and look around, and I do see that they all just wave at you. If somebody comes in, they all wave at the person. They know each patient by name, which is highly appreciated. I like that fact that they know their patients. They take time to talk to them. It's clean. I have not really seen anything that I would say that they do not keep their facility clean. It's clean. It's not far from the hospital. It's been great, and my uncle feels safe there. The staff members are really great. They call the patients by their first name. They're really kind. They take time to talk to the patients, and they make sure they're comfortable, too. If they're outside and somebody starts yelling help, they'll just barge in and help that person, which is good. I think the food is good, but my uncle who is not easily pleased with what he eats, so he tends to pick on it sometimes. I guess my uncle is just too picky when it comes to food. He has always been like that, so it doesn't really make us wonder why he started saying things like, "I don't like the food here," because we already know that he is just the pickiest person in the world. But I've tasted some of the food, and I feel like it's good. My uncle did not sign up for any activities; he is unable to do so. But I saw some of the residents, they have this church choir that goes in there, and then they listen to them perform. They have game days wherein they go down and then they play dominoes. It's fun to see them like they're dogging each other out. I saw a group of them were listening to Audible. They have a book club, and they listen to Audible. They have that monthly thing where they go in there and they just vent out what they want or what they want to change. It's not an open forum, but it's sort of like something to make the facility better. So those were the ones I've seen so far. The program director there makes it a point to where he can have everybody participate. He would make my uncle participate if he could, but he just can't."

"The Waterford at Virginia Beach is fantastic and clean. My husband is in Reflections, which is their locked down or memory care unit. They listen to you. If you have a problem and go to the right people, you can get things fixed. He loves The Waterford. They're caring. They have Christmas parties, cookouts, picnics, and several things scheduled for the people outside the locked-down unit. They have an activities director who does exercises with them. They have puzzles and crafts and people who come in and sing for them and play piano. The food is fantastic. He is a country boy and very picky, and I have never seen him turn a plate down and loves the desserts. There's just not as many activities as I would like, and they are a little expensive."

"The service at Indian River Residential Care Community is wonderful because this is a facility that all the people there are all in auxiliary grant, which mean that they are not a rich facility and I don't know if they have patients with private pay. There are a lot of things that they do not have. But for people like my son who cannot go even for one month on a private pay and can no longer live on his own, I thank God there is a facility like this. There is no choice menu, but that's alright. These people are happy that somebody is cooking for them. If they don't like what the dinner is, they can always have a sandwich. They don't have a lot of activities and that's very disappointing because I think old people need activities. But for activities, you need money. These are not well read people, so I think a library will be wasted. However, if a van can take them to a dollar store or Walmart once every other week, that will be wonderful. They will have something to look forward to, but they don't have that. There are some downfalls and yet for people who have nowhere else to go, thank God the place is there. I will rate the manager of that facility absolutely the highest mark plus double it. She is a wonder on this earth and all the people in that facilityand these are her words are her children. She is a wonderful human being. She is very good. She does what she has to do. She has taken a person out of there because he is a danger to others. She gives him a number of chances but it comes to a point that she can't keep him there any longer. Nothing is perfect and I am not saying that this place is perfect. Not all people are as nice or understanding or as kind as she. But ultimately she is in charge and she listen when you talk to her. She asks how we are doing and is everything is okay. She speaks with us and gives us a beautiful greeting when we come in. She runs the place beautifully. It is the love of her life and it shows. The people who are there are on auxiliary grant and these are the people who are not well-off at all. They haven't any abundance of anything in life and some of them like my son are mentally ill and other problems. So, they can't go out and earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year so they can go to a private pay. This is a special place for special people. If somebody doesn't have enough money and can get an auxiliary, there is not that many places around to choose from. "

"Everything at The Villages of Rosemont looked very nice. They have nice furniture and they have a TV that's out for everybody. It's a nice place to stay. The rooms and the building itself looked nice. The lady said that they do activities with the residents and she was also extremely nice. Just by interacting with her, I get a feeling that she's a very pleasant person. She had other things going on and stuff like that, but she stopped what she was doing and printed out Medicaid information that I would need for the future, even if I didn't go with them. I thought that was nice as well because they didn't have to do that."

"Serenity Care of VA is really amazing, honestly my Mother and I weren’t big fans of the huge corporate assisted living centers. "My father has been a resident for 4.5 years. He is blind, almost deaf and his mind is slipping. As his condition has declined, he has needed additional care. He is now at the highest level of care in the memory unit. I visit him every day and have the resources to place him in any facility. I have never once, considered moving him to another facility. All facilities have rooms, walls, heat and air-conditioning. What keeps my father here is the quality of the staff and the attention that he receives. I have a white board in his room so that the staff can let me know, without tracking anyone down, his daily condition, did he eat, how much, what is his mood is, any other issues I need to know about. They do this EVERYDAY. I cannot more highly recommend this facility."

"My mom moved into Bickford of Chesapeake in November. The facility is beautiful and brand new. It just opened in May, but it feels like home when you're inside. It doesn't feel institutional at all. They have big fireplaces and sofas in the seating areas. The staff is amazing and very knowledgeable. My mom has a large studio room that's nice and bright. It doesn't have a kitchenette. It's just a full bathroom with a walk-in shower. She has a dresser, a nightstand, a sofa with a small coffee table, and a bed, and there's still plenty of room. Three meals a day are included, and they have regular doctor visits. They have a hair salon inside. They do different fun activities all the time, like movies, popcorn, and games. What I was impressed with is that they have different stations set up throughout the facility to trigger memories. So, one is set up to look like an office, another is set up to look like a laundry area with an ironing board. They're very nicely done. I've been there to visit her when she's having her meals and everything looks good. It's farm-to-table as much as possible. They use fresh ingredients, they don't use processed foods."

"I didn't get an extensive tour at Commonwealth Senior Living at Cedar Manor because they were kind of busy that day. I mean, I know where the facility was, so I went and talked to them just briefly, but I had been there before to visit other people, a couple from church who have moved in there. So, I'm somewhat familiar with their facility and their set up. It's very nice, it's pretty close, ten minutes away, and the layout is nice. It's a little bit older facility, maybe ten or fifteen years old, a little smaller. But the facility is nice and the folks on the staff that I met were very nice. I don't think there were any shared rooms. There were one-bedrooms. The folks that I visited before had a one-bedroom, with a little seating area, and a little kitchenette. They were very happy there. I didn't take a full tour, but I was greeted by the receptionist, and I got some names and some information, and she gave me a quick rundown of things, though. But I haven't been back for the full tour. They had a lot of activities as well, group activities. There were some nice meeting areas for the family. There were different meeting areas on the ground floor that I saw. I also saw the cafeteria. It looked like a nice set up, and there was a court, and some outside areas as well where the residents could go and get some fresh air. They had a good staff and lots of activities to keep people engaged and active."
