Newport News Home Care Resources

Home care services are only one of the pieces needed for seniors to gracefully age in place. There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Below, we’ve compiled a few of the most helpful resources in Newport News:

Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia

Address: 5361-A Virginia Beach Blvd, Virginia Beach, VA 23462
Phone Number: (757) 456-2366

Catholic Charities of Eastern Virginia serves Newport News and many surrounding regions with an assortment of programs for elderly residents. The main service offered by the charity includes in-home respite care, which is offered at an extremely low cost for seniors aged 60 or older. For this service, a representative of Catholic Charities first performs an in-home assessment of potential care recipients. The organization also offers companion care to elders on a limited-term basis.

Virginia Weatherization Assistance Program

Address: 88 Carnation Street, Richmond, VA 23225
Phone Number: (804) 233-2827

Virginia’s Weatherization Assistance Program is administered by the state Department of Housing and Community Development with the aid of federal and state funds. In Newport News, it’s handled locally by the Project:HOMES initiative under federal and state guidelines. These stipulate that elderly and other low-income residents of the city can have their owned or rented homes weather-protected and upgraded free of charge if they earn less than $31,349 as single-person households or below $40,995 for two-person homes. These amounts increase with additional household members. Seniors receiving Supplemental Security Income payments are automatically eligible.

Peninsula Agency on Aging (PAAINC)

It offers a roster of services and programs that include a regional Meals on Wheels service for the homebound, a scheduled transportation service for elders, elder care coordination services and a Long Term Care Ombudsman. The agency also offers elders and caregivers referrals and information for other local, state and federal benefits programs.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – oftentimes it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
