"We were able to work something out with Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton. My mom has been there since 2017, and overall, we were pleased with the care she received. But with the COVID situation, staffing was short. Those are things that were beyond everybody's control. We're thankful that our mother did not develop COVID while she was there and is still there. The short staffing is problematic, but I don't think it's unique to Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton. I think there's a shortage of certified nursing assistants everywhere you go. We were satisfied overall. But I do think something that we attempted to achieve simply because of the cost of memory care was to get the Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton to add a keypad-controlled exit because our mother wandered out and that was the trigger for us to start looking for something else. We didn't want to put her in memory care, but the more we looked at her behavior and compared it to what are the sort of classic signs that it's time to go to memory care, we realized that's where she needed to be. I just think rather than wait for somebody to wander on the assisted living side, that a keypad-controlled exit would be good for everybody because it would not prevent those residents who are capable of going and coming on their own from being able to do this and continue to do that. It simply means that they would know the key code and they could carry it in their purse or their wallet, at the same time, it would prevent someone like my mother from having been able to walk out because they don't have the staff to monitor the doors. It's on camera, but if they don't have staff to watch the camera, then a person like my mother could do exactly what she did, which is open the door and walk down the sidewalk. I think that would be a smart thing to do rather than wait for a time when you aren't so fortunate, and the resident goes missing or is a victim of crime. My mom will be moving into memory care. She is still in assisted living, and we are praying that she doesn't go out again. I told them that I don't think that she was trying to escape. I think she just pushed on the door and the door opened and so she walked outside. I don't think she was trying to escape per se. Overall, we were pleased with the care that my mom received. When we were at the height of COVID, it was difficult for our mother because she had a private room and they required all the residents to remain in their room all day and they would bring their meals to them. But they did not want them to come out of their room and walk up and down the hallway or eat together in the dining room. Our mother became depressed. She said that she felt like she was being imprisoned for a crime she did not commit. Now and then, she'd come out of the room forgetting she was not supposed to, and some staff person, much younger than my mother, would raise their voice at her and that upset her. She just celebrated her 92nd birthday, and so she felt very disrespected because of that. So that was not good, but that particular person is no longer there. There is some staff who bonded with her and vice versa, and they used to tease her. It was really good. As her cognitive functioning declined, and there was such a high turnover in staff that it was hard for her to bond. But because I know the range of what you could get in terms of assisted living, overall, we feel very fortunate that our mother still is independent, walking, and eating and those kinds of things. I would rate the activities higher than a 5. My mother would interrupt a conversation with us to get to the activities. She'd say, 'I need to go. They're starting their activities.' And she just loved participating. They would sometimes take them out on the van and let them see the town and what was going on. She loved the activities. She also likes the beauty salon. They would give the residents complimentary manicures and she likes that. You can do your laundry yourself or if you're less able to do that, then you can for a fee get them to do your laundry weekly. That was nice, but sometimes they couldn't do it on your assigned day. Like my mother's assigned day was Wednesday, but my sister might go in and discover the laundry hadn't been done. Frankly, it was a reflection of being short-staffed. My point is, some families like to take the laundry home and do it themselves, and then others like to have them do it, so we preferred to have them do it. "

"The place is great. Before I even got there, the lady on the phone, her customer service skills were so good, I was done. I didn't have to come up there. When I went there, I was blown away. It felt just like at home, you weren't just another resident, you felt like part of things. I was waiting for my wife to get approved to go, and they helped us all along the way in, and I just can't get over that. The lady we just talked to answered any questions we had, and the layout was so great. It felt like home as soon as I walked through the door. We saw a one-bedroom apartment. Everything, like the bedroom, the kitchen was good, the bathroom, everything was great, and it had a nice, big closet. They were playing bingo, and they got other stuff there. They've got a whole activity board, they've got a calendar, they go on trips, they go shopping, there's just so much going on there. They made you feel like family. The food was excellent; good chef."

"My mother has moved into First Choice Assisted Living. It is excellent. I would recommend them to anybody. The staff members are all very caring. They take care of my mother just like I would care for her. They have activities, but my mother is not in the place right now where she would do those activities. Their food is home cooking and more of a Southern thing. If there is something that they are fixing that you don't eat, they would cater something different. I am welcomed any time of the day or night, and every time I have been there, it has been clean. First Choice is more individually catered. There is a smaller amount of tenants, so you get better care because you get less people to care for."

"We toured Charter Senior Living of Williamsburg. The tour went extremely well. It was clean and everything looked nice. They took me all over the whole place. The rooms looked like they would be fine for what I was looking for. The staff was very helpful, they answered all my questions, and they seemed very knowledgeable. They sent us a home-cooked meal, and it was delicious. The place looked great."

"I think Spring Arbor is the best one. As far as the look, it was very clean, very nice to look at, and well-kept. It looked like a well-maintained place. The way they took care of things, their technology involved with care, and how they had that set up, I thought it was good as well. That's why I picked them."

"My friend has moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at Williamsburg. We were very pleased with them. They were very courteous and kind. The facility is excellent. It is well-maintained and well-staffed. My friend has a private room there that is very nice. It has all the memory care facilities necessary for her. They have shared rooms, too. They have an outside garden area. They have different activities that would inspire each individual person. There are activities for painting and drawing. There are games, puzzles, and group activities as well. For their individual rooms, they have memory boxes by their door to assist them in finding their own personal rooms. Of course, they have 24-7 care. You can be there and visit within that 24-7. They have lots of different activities for the people there. In terms of the monthly fee, it's comparable to everyone else."

"Brookdale Chambrel Williamsburg was very nice. If I ever go into a senior place, that would probably be the one that I would pick. It's not so confining. It had a front door and a back door that leads to a little patio. It didn't feel like an apartment. It felt more like home. They provide just about everything to their residents. They provide transportation to your doctor's office or if you want to go shopping, they serve two meals a day, and have different activities like arts and crafts, wine tastings, and stuff like that. The staff was great. They wanted to be sure that I understood everything. They have called me and invited me to picnics, to view the functions that they have, to dinners, and lunches. They went above and beyond. It's peaceful and gorgeous out there. They have trees around whereas a lot of the other facilities don't have."

"I toured Edgeworth Park at New Town. It was a very, very nice place. They seemed to have a very secure check-in procedure there. The rooms were nice. The lady who took us on the tour was great. We saw their exercise room. Of course, we saw the dining room, and it looked very nice. It sounds like they are very responsive to people's dietary needs. An example that they used is that, if they have someone who is having a problem eating, they would work with them to come up with some things that he/she would be able to eat."

"We visited friends at Gloucester House and brought them requested items/goodies, and fixed their equipment when they needed it. The nurses were dedicated and friendly, and very patient with some very trying residents. We needed to store ice cream and other goodies in the nurses station sometimes and everyone was very good about leaving it for our friends. The nursing home is always clean and well maintained. The food served to our friends looked and smelled quite appetizing. They frequently have fun activities for the residents and there are special events for the holidays too. Seems like a great place. If anyone we know needs their sort of care, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. The only caveat is that - at the time, they may have fixed this - they needed to get their internet upgraded to current standard limits. We couldn't even get our friends' computer's virus definitions to download. Regular internet surfing was out the question. Aside from that, its a great place!. "

"Harmony at Harbour View was topnotch. They were really good. They followed up. The price was high, but it was reasonable compared to other places. The building was gorgeous. The layout was good. I loved the floor plan, and the staff Vivienne was good. They provide three meals a day, too."

"We went to Commonwealth Senior Living at Churchland House. It was very clean and neat. The grounds were very pretty. It's a beautiful place. The staff was very knowledgeable, and she was very easy to talk to. Some of the patients when we were there were doing adult coloring with colored pencils, and I thought that was cool. The rooms were very pretty, they only had two to choose from, just a larger one and a smaller one. I like their layout, they were all one story. It was one long hall, and you could see the nurse's station from everywhere. I like that layout."
