"My mother has moved into First Choice Assisted Living. It is excellent. I would recommend them to anybody. The staff members are all very caring. They take care of my mother just like I would care for her. They have activities, but my mother is not in the place right now where she would do those activities. Their food is home cooking and more of a Southern thing. If there is something that they are fixing that you don't eat, they would cater something different. I am welcomed any time of the day or night, and every time I have been there, it has been clean. First Choice is more individually catered. There is a smaller amount of tenants, so you get better care because you get less people to care for."

"I think Spring Arbor is the best one. As far as the look, it was very clean, very nice to look at, and well-kept. It looked like a well-maintained place. The way they took care of things, their technology involved with care, and how they had that set up, I thought it was good as well. That's why I picked them."

"My friend has moved into Commonwealth Senior Living at Williamsburg. We were very pleased with them. They were very courteous and kind. The facility is excellent. It is well-maintained and well-staffed. My friend has a private room there that is very nice. It has all the memory care facilities necessary for her. They have shared rooms, too. They have an outside garden area. They have different activities that would inspire each individual person. There are activities for painting and drawing. There are games, puzzles, and group activities as well. For their individual rooms, they have memory boxes by their door to assist them in finding their own personal rooms. Of course, they have 24-7 care. You can be there and visit within that 24-7. They have lots of different activities for the people there. In terms of the monthly fee, it's comparable to everyone else."

"Brookdale Chambrel Williamsburg was very nice. If I ever go into a senior place, that would probably be the one that I would pick. It's not so confining. It had a front door and a back door that leads to a little patio. It didn't feel like an apartment. It felt more like home. They provide just about everything to their residents. They provide transportation to your doctor's office or if you want to go shopping, they serve two meals a day, and have different activities like arts and crafts, wine tastings, and stuff like that. The staff was great. They wanted to be sure that I understood everything. They have called me and invited me to picnics, to view the functions that they have, to dinners, and lunches. They went above and beyond. It's peaceful and gorgeous out there. They have trees around whereas a lot of the other facilities don't have."

"I toured Edgeworth Park at New Town. It was a very, very nice place. They seemed to have a very secure check-in procedure there. The rooms were nice. The lady who took us on the tour was great. We saw their exercise room. Of course, we saw the dining room, and it looked very nice. It sounds like they are very responsive to people's dietary needs. An example that they used is that, if they have someone who is having a problem eating, they would work with them to come up with some things that he/she would be able to eat."

"This is a long overdue letter of thanks to Gloucester House for the care of my mother. I truly believe we could not have found a better place for her to finish out her years on earth than in the Sweet Memories Unit at GH. Hindsight is 20/20 and we can see how it all fell into place. We (my sister and I) feel we were "lead" to GH. It all started back in 2003. My husband and I purchased a home in Hayes. We physically moved in 2004. At the time, my mother and sister shared a residence in northern Virginia. As we got out into the community of Gloucester, people would inquire as to why we chose Gloucester as our retirement home. I always answered, "I don't know. It just happened." A friend of mine told me that there had to be a reason so I started looking for the reason. It took several years before I realized why we were here. In 2009 my sister became engaged and married. It was her first marriage at the age of 66! She called me and asked if I could find a home for mother who had been diagnosed w/Alzheimer's for years and was 96 years old. I did not know where to turn. I picked up a copy of Senior Living and found that GH offered care for Alzheimer patients. We came to GH and we were totally impressed w/the facility. GH was like a home, not an institution. There were no elevators to deal with. The staff speaks English which was not true in northern Virginia. We met you and we were so impressed. It was such an easy transition from mother's previous living arrangement to GH. My mother was very happy at GH and we enjoyed visiting her there. Her happiness and comfort meant everything to us. Thank you, thank you, thank you! "

"Harmony at Harbour View was topnotch. They were really good. They followed up. The price was high, but it was reasonable compared to other places. The building was gorgeous. The layout was good. I loved the floor plan, and the staff Vivienne was good. They provide three meals a day, too."

"I toured Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall. Erica showed us where to go and what we were looking for. They were very accommodating. We took a tour of the facility. We saw that the individuals were very happy. They have a community room. You can watch football. They have a lot of room and they have a full calendar of activities. The rooms are spacious and clean. They have a little kitchenette in some rooms."

"The service at Indian River Residential Care Community is wonderful because this is a facility that all the people there are all in auxiliary grant, which mean that they are not a rich facility and I don't know if they have patients with private pay. There are a lot of things that they do not have. But for people like my son who cannot go even for one month on a private pay and can no longer live on his own, I thank God there is a facility like this. There is no choice menu, but that's alright. These people are happy that somebody is cooking for them. If they don't like what the dinner is, they can always have a sandwich. They don't have a lot of activities and that's very disappointing because I think old people need activities. But for activities, you need money. These are not well read people, so I think a library will be wasted. However, if a van can take them to a dollar store or Walmart once every other week, that will be wonderful. They will have something to look forward to, but they don't have that. There are some downfalls and yet for people who have nowhere else to go, thank God the place is there. I will rate the manager of that facility absolutely the highest mark plus double it. She is a wonder on this earth and all the people in that facilityand these are her words are her children. She is a wonderful human being. She is very good. She does what she has to do. She has taken a person out of there because he is a danger to others. She gives him a number of chances but it comes to a point that she can't keep him there any longer. Nothing is perfect and I am not saying that this place is perfect. Not all people are as nice or understanding or as kind as she. But ultimately she is in charge and she listen when you talk to her. She asks how we are doing and is everything is okay. She speaks with us and gives us a beautiful greeting when we come in. She runs the place beautifully. It is the love of her life and it shows. The people who are there are on auxiliary grant and these are the people who are not well-off at all. They haven't any abundance of anything in life and some of them like my son are mentally ill and other problems. So, they can't go out and earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year so they can go to a private pay. This is a special place for special people. If somebody doesn't have enough money and can get an auxiliary, there is not that many places around to choose from. "

"We have toured the Warwick Forest. The place was really nice. The specific floor plan we were looking at has additional storage room. Their separate storage area is very large. We had a choice of the carpeting, wooden floor, and the paint color, and which was really very nice. They had a theater, which is a little bit unusual, as other places we visited did not have a theater. They had standard transportation to doctors' appointments, shopping centers, and to local artistic theater. We ate there after the tour was over. They had the typical meal plan where you get 30 meals per month per person. The only downside is they do not carry over at the end of the month, so it is a use-it or lose-it meal plan. They have two doctors who live on-site and will actually come to your apartment to see you, house call style, which would be very appropriate. However, you're not required to use their doctors. If you don't want to switch from your current doctor, that's fine with them, but it is available to you. "

"I visited The Hamilton Assisted Living in Yorktown for my friend. They have good programs, good care, and oversight of the people. I thought what I saw was good. The rooms looked more than adequate. It was a pleasant experience, and it seemed to be a very friendly facility. There seems to be some camaraderie among the staff and the patients or the people there, too. They have a library and some gym equipment for building strength or returning to strength. They have salons, so they can get their hair done, too. They had the kinds of facilities that would be very useful for someone in my friend's situation. They provide three meals a day, but I didn't try their food or anything. They did say that most people there like it."
