We toured St. Anthony Village in Portland, and I was very impressed by their assisted living. I really like the community, and I loved everything that I saw. The area outside was fantastic, with the garden plots that are raised so that the residents can have their own space to plant things. I've seen that done before, and I think it makes a real difference for the people who like to grow things. The friendliness of the staff was a big part of why I liked it, too. We realized within a few minutes of talking to the gal who was touring us that it wasn't going to work out for me, but she still was very cheerful about taking us and showing us a couple of rooms. There were available studio apartments, and she was very helpful, and not everybody is when they discover the person's not going to buy whatever it is that they're selling. Everybody was really nice. The conditions of everything are clean and not shabby. I was impressed, and I felt fairly comfortable there, as did the people who lived there. Most of them were happy and content, or seemed to be. The space in the courtyard was really nice so that a person could go out there and sit on the benches or work on the little garden plots or just sit in the shade and relax. Not all places have that, so I was impressed. They were just finishing up in the dining room, so I did not eat anything, but we walked by it, and it looked clean. There were still people eating, and the staff was busy taking things around and doing their job, and it looked nice. I went up and down the elevator, and it was very nice. They were not grungy, and the apartment looked very nice. The paint jobs, the counters, and the nice little refrigerator areas were impressive.
