Located on Oregon’s Columbia and Willamette Rivers, Portland is home to more than 650,000 residents, 12.3% of whom are over age 65. It has a wide range of cultural activities, such as the Center for Native American Art and the Suzhou-style Lan Su Chinese Garden, which draws inspiration from Portland’s sister city. There’s also the Oregon Zoo, which is home to more than 2,600 unique animals. Outdoor activities are available on the riverside and include swimming, picnicking, hiking and fishing for more active seniors.

Portland’s senior residents have access to many home health care programs. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2019, the average monthly cost of homemaker services in Portland is $5,590 and $5,762 for a home health aide. This is higher than the national monthly median, which is $4,290 for homemaker services and $4,385 for a home health aide.

At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Portland area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. In addition to our in-depth provider listings, we’ve compiled a list of resources to help seniors and their families access all the tools they need to age in place safely and gracefully.

Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care

Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.

Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care

If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
