Assisted Living Reviews for Chesterwood Village

Chesterwood is a beautiful facility and very well maintained. The staff have always been very responsive in addressing patient care needs, especially during this pandemic. An added bonus to having great staff, food and facilities are the social activities they offer on a daily basis for resident interactions. Highly recommend Chesterwood!

Chesterwood Village is a very nice community. It's beautiful. They provide activities and meals, and they have an aide and a nurse. My father seems to like the food very well. The staff is extremely nice.

Provider Response

My grandmother was a resident there for many years. She was always well taken care of. The facility is clean. She always told me that the food was good. Unfortunately as she got older we had to move her into skilled nursing. I would have taken her nowhere else beside Chesterwood!

Facility is lovely and rooms very nice and large. But administration constantly tells you things that don’t happen or are not accurate. Not enough staff in kitchen areas which adds more work to the care staff who are already short handed. Long term skilled care patients can wait over an hour for food to arrive. Sometimes my relative is forgotten completely. One morning forgotten and didn’t get breakfast until I asked and it was only an hour before lunch time!!! Activities for LTC residents scheduled right at lunch or dinner time some days. The staff they have are mostly lovely and caring people who are doing the best they can but are only human and can’t make up for the lack of adequate numbers. It may be ok for people who can do things for themselves, but the helpless are not properly helped. My assessment is it’s an administration/owner problem. We are looking elsewhere.

The food has been horrible frequently! A BLT was served ice cold for dinner, spaghetti was served cold an hour and half later to a diabetic that had insulin quite awhile ago, and people are bringing in food for some of the residents because it had been so bad. Care has declined. Many of the good aids left. Some of the staff has refused to care if close to the time they are getting off. A couple of staff members are rough with the patients. For the cost, at least the food should be edible all of the time and care should be good.

Provider Response

We are always thankful for any comments regarding the care of our residents. They are our top priority. While we understand your concern about aides leaving, it is typical for senior living facilities across the country. We do want you to know that all professional staff and vigorously trained prior to dealing with patients. We will make sure the supervisor is aware of your concerns. In addition, food service will be reviewed as well. Comments received lately have complimented the food. Your opinions matter and we will certainly follow up of your comments.

I'm now in Chesterwood Village. They have a nurse and two aides on duty at all times and we have a push button thing we wear around our necks. If we push the button, one of the aides will be in our room in two minutes. It's pretty good. They help us with our showers and our medications. We have our own dining room and we get three meals a day. It's a beautiful facility. They cleaned the room and washed the rug when I got in. It's spotless, so I'm very happy. They only had a studio available when I got here. Somebody moved out and I got one of the best rooms. It's very pretty. It's working out very nice for me. Every morning they have a sheet of paper stating what the activities for the day are. They play bingo at night and do different things. It's pretty average price wise.

Provider Response

Thanks, Anne, for your kind five-star review of Chesterwood Village. We are so happy you are part of our family here and that you are thriving on the excellent services from the professional nursing staff, our well-appointed rooms and the numerous daily activities we offer to keep your mind alert and your socialization active. We take great pride in our facility and thank you for recognizing Chesterwood as such a lovely and well-kept place to reside.

The food situation has gotten worse. We were told several months ago that if Morrison’s could not provide better food and service, then changes would be made. Some of the changes that have been made include charging residents $1 each for bananas, apples and oranges. Also, if you selected from a list of alternative meal choices, you are charged $5.95 for a sandwich. We were never charged for these things in the past. How were these changes communicated? The waitress had to tell us. For the kind of money that you pay this is awful.

Provider Response

We heard our residents loud and clear. On May 6 we met with residents in the Chapel and announced we would end our partnership with our current food service provider on May 31, 2019. We are pleased to inform you that all dining services will be managed by our own staff starting June 1. Second, it's important for you to know that residents were never supposed to incur the charges you discussed. We will make sure that those charges are eliminated from past and present billing. We believe this new era in food service will result in delicious and nutritious food offerings that will elicit renewed camaraderie and an excellent customer service experience.

My mother was a resident of Chesterwood Village for 11 years. The food was really deplorable, it was so bad, and even the doctor there went to the owners and said, “All my patients are losing weight, there has to be something with the food.” When she first went there, they have a lot of amenities, like a call button when you got sick in the middle of the night, they took that away, and they have a lot of turnover. My mother had a 2-bedroom, her apartment was very nice, but very closed off. They have one small pub, and one small dining room, and there’s no place for people to meet and congregate. Their activity calendar was very limited. It’s hard to rate the staff, they’re never around, and the ones I knew were very unhappy, and generally left. The rent just kept going up, and there were less and less services.

My tour at Chesterwood Village was wonderful. The rooms were beautiful and the staff was great. They have everything, but they don’t have Medicaid. They offer all kinds of things like games and sports.

Chesterwood Village is very nice and in a nice location. It is also easy to get onto the freeway. There's lots of shopping nearby. We had classes there for retired people and had eaten there, too. They had a movie theater in their main building, which was very nice. However, we did not go to visit any of the independent condos because there wasn't one that was available to see.

As Chesterwood has grown over the years, the rent has increased substantially, once 10% in one year. As the rent increases, the services and amenities have declined. The food is barely palatable and the nutritional balance is lacking as they do not have a dietician on staff. Most of the staff is very pleasant, but the value for what you pay has just gone downhill.

When I moved in to independent living there were so many special services offered. Most of those are now gone. I miss having the option of calling someone 24 hours a day if something goes wrong. One resident had her washing machine hose rupture in the night and the water continued to flood her apartment until the office opened in the morning. I know it is "independent" living but I never used to feel so alone. There is no call button. They took that away along with a lot of other amenities and the rent continues to go up, up, up. The only good thing about the food is I have been able to lose weight because the food is just dreadful and they do not seem to care that everyone is complaining about the food. The staff is nice but there is a lot of turnover.

My mother is in independent living and has been living there for over 8 years. Last year the rent went up $300 and less than a year later it went up another $200. The food is almost inedible but the residents are not allowed to complain about the food. There were a lot more accommodations 8 years ago. It seems the higher the rent goes up, the fewer services are provided. Many are moving out due to the rent increases, the awful food, and the fact that fewer and fewer services are offered. The doctor and nurse are absolutely awesome, but he is only there one day a week. Housekeeping and the waitresses are very nice.

Chesterwood was very nice, and there was no problem, except that there was a buy-in a little bit steeper than what we wanted to put down. The staff was absolutely great and very nice.

Chesterwood was very good. The staff was very nice, took a lot of time with us, and showed us a lot of different things. They had menus and a buffet-style dining room. They had multiple types of dining and quite a few activities like games, crafts, and movies. They had a library, a salon, physical therapy, a theater, and an ice cream bar.

I’m going to Chesterwood Village. It’s a very nice place. The food smelled good. They have a lot of activities, the ladies go out shopping and the men go to sports outings, golf outings, or casinos. The rooms seemed real nice, they had patio homes, but they were pretty well filled up.

We visited Chesterwood, which is the second best that we like. They offer a really good physical therapy and workout area. They were so good that they can actually take people from outside of Chesterwood to provide physical therapy for us, so they really are set up for good physical therapy. The staff was very helpful.

Mom ended up being at Chesterwood Village; she’s all set and comfortable. When my father passed away, she just moved into a different unit there. They have everything; they have independent-living, assisted living, dementia units, and nursing units. They have apartments, condos, and a patio home. It’s an upscale neighborhood, and it’s an upscale facility. The staff is excellent so far. She enjoys the coffee, breakfast, the bingos at night, and the Wednesday outings with the other independent-living residents. She enjoys the shuttle that goes to the stores a couple of times a week. She enjoys the parties that they have every week and the facilities they have there.

I really like everything about Chesterwood village but the food, they have changed the menu and sadly worse, for the cost of living there they should be able to hire a chef that can prepare fresh vegetables and a nice piece of meat. The desserts are cheap sweet things no one wants, feel bad that the people who can't drive are stuff with no options.

Chesterwood Village is a very nice facility. My mother is in independent, and my father is in rehab right now. The dining room is very clean, and the food is just OK. The staff is extremely friendly in the dining area. They have a movie theater and a lot of common areas like a coffee area. It's a very cute community.

I was at Chesterwood Village for rehab. The whole facility was great, and the people who work there from the housekeeping all the way up to the nurses, and doctors were very pleasant and very helpful with anything you needed. They were just all excellent; the place was excellent, and the people were excellent. If you need rehabilitation or nursing care, this would be one of the places I would recommend for you to go.

Mom stayed at Chesterwood for rehab for about 10 days. An flu epidemic went through and she wasn’t treated correctly. As far as the facility goes, I think it’s a nice place. Her accommodation is fine and she had a private room. With regards to the food, all she would eat would be grilled cheese sandwich as she would not eat their other food. I feel that the staff is not as attentive, so I would recommend that they need to be more attentive with their patients.

Chesterwood Village was a very nice facility. My mom was in their rehab side a couple of times over the last few years. The food was very good. They seemed to have quite a few activities there as well. The only downside with this one was that their apartments were small. They have lot of one-room efficiency apartments but I prefer something a little bigger. They did have some bigger ones but they're not as big as I would like.

I recently spent two weeks at Chesterwood Village and regretted the stay. They talk about well apointed rooms. I have had better rooms on aboard a ship when I was in the Navy. The food was so bland and barely warm. I must admit the staff was good, but the physical thearpy was minimal. I never saw half of the equipment that they mention in their ads.

I was very impressed with Chesterwood Village. It had more amenities than the other facilities we've visited, and the staff was just as friendly and accommodating.

My Grandfather stayed at Chesterwood for several years due to Parkinson's disease, and I must say, they do a great job. Not only did my grandfather receive excellent care, but he also had freedom that most other assisted living facilities don't offer. They offer a full restaurant, pet shop, ice cream par lour, pool tables, and much more. Not only did it feel like home, even for myself, it felt like a community. My grandfather had friends that would come and visit him inside Chesterwood, or friends that he would take strolls with throughout the facility. Personally I would suggest Chesterwood to anyone considering himself or herself or a relative for a nursing home. Great quality, great facility, great faculty.
