"We've been here at StoryPoint Fairfield for over a year now. It's such a caring community. When we first came in, we had people helping us maneuver around, find elevators and stuff, and everybody seems to have ways of helping out each other if help is needed. We were kind of met with their friendliness as we first walked in, and they're happy to have us there.
Our apartment has two bedrooms. It does have a washer and dryer in it, a kitchen if we choose to cook, and we have a patio outside where we can sit out or have plants growing out there. Any time of day, there is something going on. They will have ice cream times for us. They just had some corn on the cob and tomato stuff for us with cookies. They're always seeing to it that we eat well. They like to see that there are donuts given to us one day a week and sometimes, it's breakfast. They take a lot of time to talk to and to get to know our people who are veterans. They're very careful about including them in many things and getting everybody understand who they are and what they've been able to do for this country.
They have singing done in the common area. They're trying very hard not to move the piano around too much. There is another large room, and we follow all the rules as to how many can be in there. We have a lot of people who come to do things like singing for us and have bands. We just had a couple of musicians. We're trying to get people who can discuss some things about history. There's a little bit of this and a little bit of that that can appeal to many different people. Sometimes, we watch old movies and those are fun, too.
Liz is the head person here, and there are two aides, and they work kind of seamlessly, all three of them together, plus other people who help them out too. They want to have things for us to do that would get us out of our rooms and to meet people. We have a chef who has been with us for a couple of months now and it's working very well as far as what he's able to do. He has to probably make happy over 120-some people, which is not always easy to do, but then they follow the standards that they're supposed to have when they're doing any of their meals. They have people who come in who help to wait on us, just like a restaurant and then also bring the meals to us. There have been some young people who have come to learn how to be waiters. For the most part, we are happy in the two big dining rooms that we're in. There's always laughter going on. Sometimes, we're like children ourselves. We just like to see each other and get to know each other. There's a wide food variety and even if there's something not on that actual menu, there is something else that we can order, and we'll get it just as fine and those are good things, too.
It's a large building and it is out in the country, but it is really a pretty place to take a look at. The activities are well rounded, and they seem to speak to men and women, that kind of thing. We have a bus that takes us to different places, and we've done a lot of things, like I went fishing that I had never done before. We've gone to see musical and several sports things. Everything that you would want to do to fill up your time is there.
It's a beautiful place to live, but it's not cheap. Sometimes, there's an increase in the cost on a yearly basis. Everybody kind of groans with it, but our rooms are cleaned every other week, all of our linens, etc. are washed for us every week, we don't have to worry about having to do a new furnace or things like that, and when we sit back and think about that and look at our expenses, we know that this is probably the right place for us. We have some transportation. It's like you have senior housing, but you still can get around and do things, and you're still a part of the whole system with everybody else who is here. We're happy that we made that right decision. It looked clean and very inviting and the landscaping is pretty too. You can get out of the place where we are and walk around the building. We have gardens here that we've planted and done things like that."
