Terre Haute is in Indiana along the Wabash River. Around 60,000 residents call the city home, and 15.1% of them are seniors 65 years of age or older. Living in Terre Haute makes it easy for them to access the Terre Haute Regional Hospital and its emergency care and specialists. Another option is Union Hospital. Many nursing homes also serve the city’s seniors, and in Terre Haute, the typical rate for a semiprivate room in one is $6,464. That’s nearly $1,300 less than the corresponding national figure of $7,756, per the Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey.
The medical services offered in nursing homes are extensive, with common elements including skilled nursing and physical, occupational and speech therapy. Reflecting that high service level, nursing homes are usually the most expensive senior care providers in a given area. Many older adults are independent enough to make use of assisted living or home health care instead, which are usually more affordable than nursing home care.
This guide’s topics are the prices charged by senior care providers, including nursing homes, in Terre Haute as well as resources that assist the area’s older adults.

My aunt is in Meadows Manor Convalescent & Rehab Center. They have great care there. I have no complaints whatsoever, they’re very good to her, and they’re attentive to her physical needs. The room is very clean and comfortable, they serve very good meals, there are good portions, and they have a variety of choices. They play bingo, they talk about daily events, they have games, people come in and sing, and they do activities and crafts. The facility is kept clean, maintenance is kept up, and when we have suggestions, they’re always met. We are pleased.

The management staff does not return calls or seem interested in residents.
After my Mom died, they conveniently lost many belongings.
They returned her 80+ year old rosary to me in a little jewelry plastic bag. When I later opened it, it was broken into 4 pieces.
Someone put the pieces in a plastic bag and returned it to me without saying a word.
Almost $10,000/month for this!
What a joke.

The staff at Springhill have been exceptional, we met the Facility Director the day we were admitted, and the rest of the managerial staff the next day. Hope you love the smell of urine as this place reeks of it. You can’t escape the strong smell of urine. The place seems dirty and is far from aesthetically pleasing as can be for the many who spend their last days on Earth here. I don’t recall there being a friendly staff member. But I’m sure they make low wages while the owners reap the rewards of the high costs associated with these places. I wish they’d pay more and get better staff. My mother spent her last days here and I hate it that I lived in Tennessee and could not get her out of this dump. I did bring a big bottle of perfume and spray her and her room with it. She was never conscious but I’m sure she was glad to smell something other than urine. I don’t remember what brand perfume it was, but apparently it was a decent brand as when my mother passed away, the bottle came up missing. She only had a small bag of belongings there so it was not hard to miss the one thing in the place that was pleasant. I suggest you skip this place if you can help it.

Harrison Crossing is a beautiful facility…. the staff was not as great as everyone says. The first night my relative was in there they let her roll out of bed. A couple nights later she was ready for a massive heart attack and we was not contacted. We came the next day to find out she was in Intensive care. Her room was a private room and it was so pretty. Everything was great except for the staff and not contacting us when something major happened.

Upon walking in the front door, I came face to face with a majority of the residents gathered around the television. They were watching a soap opera with some of the staff members. A CNA was playing the piano with a few residents in the corner of the same room. I was then given a tour of the individual rooms, each containing 2 beds. The rooms were clean and organized, albeit small. Many of the rooms were currently being attended by CNAs or RNs. There was an ice pass going on while I was given the tour. Overall, the place seems happy and active. The residents are not simply left in their rooms all day long. They have group activities, exercises and entertainment. The staff is very helpful and involved. There didn’t appear to be any signs of neglect or abuse. Bedridden patients were still paid attention to and turned regularly.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Terre Haute, IN
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.

In other situations, services that make it easier to find and adjust to other care settings are available. The following organizations and programs are useful in such senior care matters as those.
Indiana's LTC Ombudsman Program offers advocacy for nursing home and assisted living residents. The program's ombudsmen help seniors resolve concerns and handle negotiations on their behalf. The organization provides transportation and minor home modifications as well. Additionally, Thrive's Aging & Disability Resource Center links seniors with unbiased options counselors who dispense information regarding available services. Free consultations are available.
Meals on Wheels assists individuals who have trouble accessing adequate meals without help. The organization's team delivers meals and performs safety checks on clients five days per week. Dietary accommodations are available. Additionally, the organization runs an outreach program to reduce isolation and a program that provides gently used clothing.
By contacting SHIP, seniors can speak to a counselor about Medicare and other health care topics, including long-term care insurance and prescription drug coverage. The program's counselors additionally help seniors organize records and make appeals. Referrals to other agencies are available when appropriate. SHIP's services are free.
