Nursing Home Communities in South Holland, IL

"Founded by holocaust survivors, Selfhelp Home is one of the better-known nonprofit Jewish assisted living/retirement communities in Chicago. The food is kosher, the residents are almost all Jewish and the staff/resident ratios are high. Despite rather high monthly costs, the facilities are not plush: they're clean, functional, safe, and well-maintained but not luxurious. Well-run Medicaid nursing homes look pretty similar. The money goes largely for staff and there are a lot of them: residents can and do get help at any point of the day with just about any task. The home also offers a wide range of activities ranging from book clubs to field trips. Generally, residents seem to like it. "

"My parents-in-law are in Norwood Crossing in an area called Norwood Park in Chicago. My mother-in-law just moved in yesterday and my father-in-law has been there for two months in rehabilitation. They have both been appreciating and enjoying the activities there for about a month. They are very friendly there and they're getting good care. The staff are very involved in the well being of the residents. It's a wonderful place and I would recommend this facility to others. "

"I would just like to mention the hard working Nurses and CNA staff! My loved one was admitted and I will be honest I had my apprehensions about this place okay!! But after I have the staff a CHANCE, they went over and beyond to make sure my mother's stay was all that and some. It's easy to find everything wrong with ANY facility, but even harder to find everything RIGHT!! I give credit where it's due and they have earned MY STAMP IF APPRIVAL???? "

"My dad is currently at Aperion Care Dolton. When you first come in, it's very welcoming. You can see the entertainment room through the double doors with parakeets and birds, arts and crafts, and things with a lot of colors that drew my eyes. It is very inviting and comfortable. It doesn't feel like a hospital and it smells good. His room has a TV, a dresser, a cabinet with shelves, a radio, and a nightstand. There's a lot of lighting and a lot of windows from floor to ceiling. So, it's nice. The staff is very professional, very hands-on, and very attentive. They always involve the residents in activities like movies, physical and mental activities."

"The staff was incredible; they really cared about my grandfather and my family. They made sure that my grandmother could spend as much time as she wanted with him, and also made sure that she had food to take her insulin with every day. The staff was very alert and aware of changes in my grandfather's condition and was proactive in treating even the slightest symptom. When he began to receive hospice care at the facility, the staff seemed just as moved emotionally as we were. The facility is also well kept and extremely clean. We were very lucky to find Tri-state, as there were not many facilities in the area that had good ratings from the state. "

"Mother just got out from here, and she stayed there for six weeks. What impressed me the most was it was very clean and smelled good. They paid attention to her needs, they listen to her, and the therapy was right on point. She didn’t particularly care for the food. She was in a 2-bedroom that was very spacious and had a window view. They have movie nights, facials, and massages. However, the nursing staff wasn’t as friendly as the others. "

"My grandmother is at BRIA of River Oaks. I don't like that they are consistently understaffed, and my grandmother is not a good fit for an environment like that because she needs someone to constantly check in on her. There are no activities or interaction. They just leave her sitting in her room. I want her to be somewhere where they're promoting an exercise. I want her quality of life to be better basically, but I just realize they can't provide that. I'm not saying that they're not nice and things like that, but it seems like they're underfunded and understaffed, so they have very few nice things to work with. It's kind of rundown. There's been no new renovations. It looks pretty old. The staff are nice. I can't really say that I don't like the staff, but they're like out of touch and not that personal. I've encountered a few nice people, but they're not all like that. Overall, this is not a good fit for my grandmother. Food is awful; it's like jail food. The facility is old and rundown. It needs to be cleaned up and remodeled. The exercise that people get, they just come out in the hallway, and if you can't walk, they'll wheel you out in the hallway, and you just sit there. That's all I've ever seen. My grandmother has a single room. She doesn't share it with anybody, and that's one thing I have loved since she has been there. She has a TV, central heat, a dresser, and a nightstand, and that's it."

"I toured Glenwood Healthcare & Rehab when I was looking for a place for my mother. The place was very good and seemed to be very accommodating. They had numerous activities for the residents to participate in, went out for dinner or lunch, and played games. "

"I have my brother here and he has been here several years. The place is fine and a lot of nice people. I used to call and no one would ever return my calls. They went through a lot of head nurses but there has been a new lady Denice who I have been speaking with about my brother. She always returns my calls and is very helpful. Finally there is a person who cares about the families as well as the patients. I feel so blessed to know I can now call and get the information I need. "

"Great place for Rehabilitation service. My father was transferred from community hospital to Munster Med Inn after his surgery. My family was concern about nursing homes in general, but this place exceeded our expectations. The CNAs did an excellent job in caring for my father. The therapy was great. I will recommend this place any time and day. "

"My father was on the first floor. He wandered out of the facility, fell, and broke his hip which required surgery. When back in the facility, he was left laying and developed terrible bed sores which put him back in the hospital. Those bed sores got infected, infection went into his leg, and gangrene set in. He later died from the gangrene. That was several years ago and sure hope they now take better care of their patients."

"We chose Prairie Manor for Dad because of the location and because a lot of other places didn't have any openings. They have a lot of activities. One of the downsides is it's not a really big facility. There are other facilities that had more common areas, and this one is kind of small. Howverve, overall I like it, and my dad likes it there. We're happy with it. I've only heard him complain about the food one time, otherwise he says he likes it. The staff members are pretty nice and always friendly. They have Bingo twice a week, movie days, and every holiday they have Thanksgiving dinner. They do what they can to keep the residents busy and occupied. The only negative is that if you call for a nurse to get medication, it could take a while. I think it's because they have so many patients and understaffing could be an issue, but that's pretty much common everywhere. In general, nursing homes are really expensive, but compared to other facilities, Prairie Manor is pretty reasonable."

"I used to go spend time there as a child and lead holiday games with the residents. I remember it being a higher security building because of the number of younger patients there. It was a rather tall building and I accidentally went to high up in the elevator getting ready for the Easter egg hunt. I had been putting posters up all through the building. I was later supposed to hide eggs outside. As soon as I got out of the elevator, I was stopped by the nurse and they explained why I could not enter the floor. I remember it being a clean, larger facility with a lot of land attached to it. There was plenty of outdoor space for residents. In comparison to other facilities is was much more friendly and brighter. Though the surrounding neighborhood leaves something to be desired. I would be careful going to and from the facility. "
