Nursing Home Communities in Homewood, IL

"I have briefly visited other nursing homes and assisted living facilities and I think this is one of the best. My mother visits almost every day, though, and I know that's one way to make sure that your relatives are well taken care of...The staff is always friendly and willing to make accommodations in the residents' schedules for visitors. For all residents, both those on the 8th floor (mainly dementia patients, some rehab) and on the lower floors (mainly in their own apartments with mini-kitchens), there are daily activities. For those who are mobile, there are frequent outings. Book club, story groups, bingo, exercise, ice cream socials...there's also a beautiful roof deck and indoor sitting area on the top floor with many couches and large windows overlooking Lake Michigan. Most residents dine together and food seems decent downstairs from what I've seen. The food on the 8th floor is pretty basic cafeteria style food, not so good. "

"Our experience having my mom here has been good so far. They take her into therapy, they help her with walking, and getting her back into daily life. It's clean and doesn't have that odor or smell when you walk in. The staff is nice and friendly."

"It was much better than I last remember. It used to be horrible. It smelled really bad now it's so clean and the staff is friendly. They take good care of the old people there. They look like they enjoy living there. I visited with my friend and she was going to see her mom. "

"My father was on the first floor. He wandered out of the facility, fell, and broke his hip which required surgery. When back in the facility, he was left laying and developed terrible bed sores which put him back in the hospital. Those bed sores got infected, infection went into his leg, and gangrene set in. He later died from the gangrene. That was several years ago and sure hope they now take better care of their patients."

"We chose Prairie Manor for Dad because of the location and because a lot of other places didn't have any openings. They have a lot of activities. One of the downsides is it's not a really big facility. There are other facilities that had more common areas, and this one is kind of small. Howverve, overall I like it, and my dad likes it there. We're happy with it. I've only heard him complain about the food one time, otherwise he says he likes it. The staff members are pretty nice and always friendly. They have Bingo twice a week, movie days, and every holiday they have Thanksgiving dinner. They do what they can to keep the residents busy and occupied. The only negative is that if you call for a nurse to get medication, it could take a while. I think it's because they have so many patients and understaffing could be an issue, but that's pretty much common everywhere. In general, nursing homes are really expensive, but compared to other facilities, Prairie Manor is pretty reasonable."

"This place is amazing. The care is the best. They are beyond thorough. Their kindness is so appreciated. My grandmother can be a challenge and they lovingly overcame it all, and give constant reports on her well being. I thank God for them. Because of them I can sleep at night. She is kept clean and well fed. Extra precaution is given because she is a fall risk. The bed is even lowered to keep her safe. I can't say enough kind words. Even when they are overwhelmed, they never change their kind professional disposition and show kindness to the rough tenants. I wouldnt change a thing. The place is beautiful, clean, I have no idea how they keep it so pristine. My grandmother can be antisocial and yet they get her to enjoy the activities which keeps her mind strong. So grateful. Send your loved ones here."

"I toured Glenwood Healthcare & Rehab when I was looking for a place for my mother. The place was very good and seemed to be very accommodating. They had numerous activities for the residents to participate in, went out for dinner or lunch, and played games. "

"I would just like to mention the hard working Nurses and CNA staff! My loved one was admitted and I will be honest I had my apprehensions about this place okay!! But after I have the staff a CHANCE, they went over and beyond to make sure my mother's stay was all that and some. It's easy to find everything wrong with ANY facility, but even harder to find everything RIGHT!! I give credit where it's due and they have earned MY STAMP IF APPRIVAL???? "

"Applewood is OK. It is a pretty decent one, and it is actually nice. Most of the staff is very nice. They're easy to work with. There is nothing special about my room, but it is OK. They have lots of activities out in the main room; however, I am unable to walk, so I don't get to participate a lot. They have games, parties, certain services, etc. "

"I've been to BRIA of Chicago Heights. It was nice. It was welcoming. They explained a lot of things about the place. They were getting some events ready for the residents. When I went, they were playing some music for them, and they were doing little activities. It was okay. It was clean. The workers were doing their job taking care of the residents. The residents looked clean. The staff spoke to me, and they greeted me."

"I had my rehab in Oak Forest Hospital where I stayed for two months. It was a clean and nice facility. Considering that I just had a stroke, everything seemed and appeared to be wonderful. I had no complaints. I had a very positive experience with that particular rehab. The staff was good. They helped me daily with my rehabilitation. Everything was good. "

"Manorcare South Holland has a very professional and caring staff. The care they are currently providing my Mother is supportive and is substantial. Thank you to all the staff members. "

"The staff was incredible; they really cared about my grandfather and my family. They made sure that my grandmother could spend as much time as she wanted with him, and also made sure that she had food to take her insulin with every day. The staff was very alert and aware of changes in my grandfather's condition and was proactive in treating even the slightest symptom. When he began to receive hospice care at the facility, the staff seemed just as moved emotionally as we were. The facility is also well kept and extremely clean. We were very lucky to find Tri-state, as there were not many facilities in the area that had good ratings from the state. "

"I used to go spend time there as a child and lead holiday games with the residents. I remember it being a higher security building because of the number of younger patients there. It was a rather tall building and I accidentally went to high up in the elevator getting ready for the Easter egg hunt. I had been putting posters up all through the building. I was later supposed to hide eggs outside. As soon as I got out of the elevator, I was stopped by the nurse and they explained why I could not enter the floor. I remember it being a clean, larger facility with a lot of land attached to it. There was plenty of outdoor space for residents. In comparison to other facilities is was much more friendly and brighter. Though the surrounding neighborhood leaves something to be desired. I would be careful going to and from the facility. "
