"I went to see Charter Senior Living of Hazel Crest and toured their assisted living facility for my uncle. They were wonderful, and the staff there was very pleasant and accommodating. However, I don't think the setting was right for my uncle, only because the rooms for assisted living are more like a dorm set up and not like studio apartments. While each room has a toilet and sink, they do not have showers, so they have a community shower, and that kind of was a little off-putting, although I get it. They explained to us that the reasoning behind that was so that they have hands-on control and monitoring to avoid falls and things like that, which I understand. However, they have to schedule their showers, so there's not much freedom to just bathe yourself because you have to kind of schedule it. I'm sure they clean in between patients or residents showering, but it's the thought that it's not my uncle's own shower but a community shower that kind of puts us off. They also couldn't have microwaves in the room. I get that they encourage residents to come out and dine and socialize, but sometimes you also just want to kind of pop a bag of popcorn or something, so it's kind of odd. If someone doesn't mind that kind of living, then that's fine. It's just not a good fit for my uncle. I think he needs encouragement to do things on his own, because if people are doing too much for him, then he's going to expect that too, and just kind of think he's being waited on, and if that does not happen, he'll get agitated. Other than that, the place was good and clean. The setup is almost kind of like an indoor village where you're kind of walking around on sidewalks with old storefronts and that kind of thing, so it was really pretty as far as that goes. We did not see the kitchen where food is actually prepared. We did see that there's a centralized kitchen where all the food is made and then brought out to the different wings, and then they can be reheated or kept warm in smaller kitchens and then served. Those kitchens were OK and were adequate. They're smaller, but for what they do, I think that's fine. They're also clean. The staff who gave the tour was very nice and pleasant and gave us a good tour. She wasn't the executive, so some of the questions that we had, she kind of deferred to other departments within their facilities."
