With the Kankakee River to the south and Lake Michigan to the north, Lake County has long been popular with seniors wanting to explore their surroundings. In fact, almost 24% of the population is aged 60 and older. Outdoor enthusiasts can find plenty to keep them busy with wetlands, public parks, dune prairies, beaches, waterways and oak savannas on their doorstep. There’s also a variety of attractions for entertaining visiting family and grandchildren, including water parks and Crown Point’s Bulldog Park, which hosts summer concerts and community events throughout the year.
Lake County has more than 15 assisted living communities for seniors to choose from, which cost an average of $4,841 per month according to Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey 2020. Although this is higher than the national and state averages, Lake County’s close proximity to Chicago, IL, and its low cost of living makes the area a great option for seniors looking to retire to a peaceful location with easy access to big-city amenities.

Residences at Deer Creek seem more spacious than the other place we toured. That was my only concern, that my mom would seem to have to walk around a lot of places, but they had nurses’ stations on the floors which were nice. The staff member who showed me around was very good. It seems laid out in a way that it’s spread out, more theater versus more compact. It’s more like a square, and it seemed Deer Creek was spread out in a straight line, kind of. The residents can do their laundry and they had restaurant-style dining. The dining looked really good, and we just couldn’t sample what they had because of protocols for COVID. They had activities and different things like bingo, puzzles, and activities on each floor. It seemed they had a puzzle being worked on one floor, and some crafts. They seemed very well-organized, and they had movie nights and different things.

We toured the assisted living at Silver Birch of Hammond. The place was nice. It wasn’t extravagant, but the clientele is a mix of different cultures. The facility was clean.
They have 1-bedrooms and studios. The 1-bedrooms are a decent size for one person that doesn’t have a whole lot. It’ll be enough room for my mother-in-law.
They have activities; however because of COVID, they don’t now. They do outings once a month. They have a transportation company that will take them to doctor’s appointments if they need or grocery shopping. We’re pleased with the place as far as what they have to offer.
If my mother-in-law decides she wants to fill out an application, they said that we can come for a tasting of their food. They have a new chef. The woman who was the tour person said it’s delicious food. The dining area we just saw from through the window because it was not open at that time because it was COVID. There are only two chairs to a table, usually it’s four. They can either eat in there or they can ask for carry out and take it to their little apartment.
It looked like it was clean. It was decent. They have a little gathering area when you go into the lobby, and it looks like they have coffee and water and little snacks there. The staff that gave the tour was pretty good.

I am heartbroken because my dad died, we believe, as a result of negligence by the Miller Beach staff. Before coming to Miller Beach, my dad had colon cancer and was taking 3 medicines to assist with his bowel movements. While at Miller Beach, he was never given those medicines. After 6 months at Miller Beach, he started complaining of stomach pain. Finally three days later, they took him to the hospital. He needed emergency surgery to remove part of his colon because of blockage. Ten days later he needed a pace maker installed, three days later a feeding tube and then died the next morning. We believe that his death was caused by the negligence of the Miller Beach staff. We believe had he been taking his medicines, none of these problems would have occurred. A list of his medicines was recorded on papers dad kept in the drawer in his room. Why didn’t the staff have a copy of his meds? I would not recommend putting my loved ones in Miller Beach.

Paying for Assisted Living in Lake County
Due to its close proximity to Kankakee, Illinois, Lake County’s assisted living costs are likely similar. Genworth’s Cost of Care Survey 2020 lists the average cost of assisted living here as $4,841 per month. This is $459 above the Indiana state average of $4,382 and more than $500 higher than the U.S. median of $4,300.
The Cost of Assisted Living in Nearby Cities
Seniors in other parts of Indiana pay less for assisted living than those in Lake County. For example, retirees in Bloomington pay just $2,840, the lowest rate in the state. Cities such as Columbus and Fort Wayne also have monthly assisted living costs of less than $4,000 per month. Elsewhere in Indiana, costs are more comparable to Lake County. Those choosing assisted living in Michigan City pay approximately $4,585, while seniors in Muncie spend $4,645 each month. In Lafayette, rates increase to $4,790, which is just below the cost of assisted living in Lake County.
Across the border, seniors in Chicago, Illinois, can expect to spend more on assisted living, which averages $4,950 per month. Lake County is situated less than 45 miles from Chicago, and considering its low cost of living, the county may be a viable option for seniors looking for a more affordable area that offers easy access to a large urban center.
