The Best Assisted Living Communities in La Porte County, IN

"My client is at Crown Point Christian Village. They have activities going on every single day. They know the residents and care about them. They call the residents by name. They even recognize me. These people know exactly who everybody is, and I like that. They get them up there, interacting with everybody on a daily basis. I see a dramatic increase in my client's momentum, her thinking, and everything else within a short period of time. She's been happy. Her room is a little small. She's sharing a double room. The window side of the room is much bigger than what she has, which is the door side, but it's very accommodating. The facility is very clean. It's a fairly new facility. She says the food is good. They have physical therapy, and it's quite adequate. They're consistently encouraging the residents to keep doing as much as they can. So far, I have zero complaints with this facility. I was very impressed. The only bad thing for me is the drive. It's a very small community. It's very friendly. I highly recommend it to anyone. They're on the expensive side. They do accept Medicaid as well as private pay."

"I’ve been living in Oak Woods for about a year. It is not far from the drugstore, grocery store, the laundry mat, and the bank. Everybody is very friendly. It’s pretty clean, and we do get really good meals. The staff is quite professional. There are no arguments with the staff, and they help out people when they’re needed. Everybody has been really good. The ones that live next door to me are also satisfied. "

"We have visited Silver Birch of Michigan City. It was very clean, there were a lot of activities for the people there, and it seemed like they had a very good meal plan. The rooms are very spacious. We only spoke with one staff member, we didn't interact with very many. They have bingo, they also have a puzzle room, billiards, and they have some ladies there who put together a weekly fun night for the girls."

"I went to look at Trail Creek Place. Everything looked clean and nice. They had nice furniture. It seemed like they have good staff, and that's important too. They have outings. The rooms were one bedroom, and it looks nice. It had a small kitchen and a living room."

"My dad was in Symphony Chesterton for rehabilitation, and it was very nice. He was in rehab, so his room was just a basic room, nothing fancy, but it was clean and nice. He had heart issues, so they have him walk and do things like that. There were just strengthening therapies. The staff was nice and cooperative. They did try to get him out of there as soon as possible, but I didn't feel he was quite ready to leave. They were good with activities. They had a nice dining room, they had a lot of extra activities for them to do, and they had get-togethers that you could attend if you wanted to."

"Avalon Springs was very clean and newer. My mom was a patient there for a rehab and had excellent care there. The food looked good. They had different entertainment there that my mom enjoyed and different visiting musicians. They had a place where the girls did nails and a little movie area with popcorn and snacks. "

"My experience with Pines Village was absolutely wonderful. I was very impressed with the rooms. They're one of the lowest priced in the area for independent living and apartments, but assisted living is what I'm looking at. They had two buses that take people anywhere they need or want to go. They have it all. If you want to go out for dinner, they'll put a sign-up sheet and pick where they're going. They take you to your doctor's appointment, visit your friends, or anywhere you want to go. The dining areas were huge and beautiful, and there's one in each building. They had different facilities for each style of living. In the assisted living, they had a little cafeteria where you can go and have a sandwich or ice cream. I spoke with quite a few of the residents, and they're so friendly. I'm disabled and walk with a walker, so I think they thought I was moving in or something. Everybody comes up and says "hello" and "how are you?" I'm impressed. I used to eat there years ago when my dad was there, and it was great. When you're ready to move in, they invite you to come out and have a meal and see what it's all about. You can have one, two, or three meals a day. It's up to you what you decide you want to do. They had gardens outside. Some of them were enclosed for people with Alzheimer's, but they're completely lined with shrubs and flowers and bushes. People can just go and sit and enjoy and be outside with their relatives or friends."

"Green Oaks of Valparaiso was spotless, and the people there were friendly. I liked the staff I talked to. They were very nice. I talked to a few people, and then we ate there. They gave us lunch, and it was good. Really, really good. So I would rate this community very highly. The staff who gave the tour was really nice and very informative. The rooms are beautiful. There are mostly one-bedroom apartments and studios. They have no two-bedroom. It's a fairly new place. It's only a couple of years old. The facility is really nice."

"I know quite a few people who work there and I know the area well as I lived close by for years and everyone is caring and comforting. The area surrounding New Carlisle is a very close nit family type of people. We have several in La Porte and Michigan City and you never hear anything good about them. "

"We went here. Everything was nice. We had no problem with it. It was all compact and very available. We liked it. It was very neat and clean. The staff members were very pleasant, very nice, and very informative."

"We toured Miller's Senior Living Community of Portage. That place was over and above excellent. The grounds were beautiful. The inside was very clean. They even had an ice cream parlor inside the place, it was nice. The room was beautiful. The staff who toured me was very nice, very approachable, and well-knowledgeable. The dining area was clean. Everything was impeccable there. I would have picked that place, but this other place was closer, and it was a little bit cheaper. They have bingo as an activity. They also have days when they take them out to do shopping and field trips."

"Brookdale Portage was very nice. The dining area was also nice, but the rooms were a little small. The staff that we met were very nice and helpful as well. The few residents I spoke to said they were happy there. I would feel safe there and the place itself was clean."

"We found Miller Beach Terrace through our aunt's medical facility, nearby St. Mary Medical Center. Since our aunt requires regular checkups for her health, we liked that Miller Beach was close enough so that she could keep seeing her regular doctors easily. The facility came highly recommended by a friend of hers at the hospital, as well. We could see why when we visited. The main room was nicely decorated and felt warm and inviting; everyone we saw appeared to be very well taken care of. Our aunt has early Alzheimer's "“ so we were glad that they can accommodate her situation. We were told that as their resident's health changes, they can adapt to most any situation. They have many social activities and make trips to nearby Chicago to go shopping, visit museums, see films, theater and participate in other activities geared toward seniors. The exercise facilities were quite nice, with many options, including yoga and other classes, with some machine work available. The food was really nicely prepared "“ with options and choices for many tastes and dietary concerns. The food we sampled was delicious. The outside areas were well kept and looked peaceful, which is important to our Aunt, since she enjoys reading and writing outdoors when the weather permits. For colder days, there is a well-stocked library and a nearby media center were anyone who wishes may see a film. They also host other events there with visitors from around the community. "

"Everything is very good and I'm happy with Woodland Terrace, I've had no complaints. My mother's room is very nice and everything meets her needs just fine. They don't have a library, but they have a salon for the residents. Once a week they take the residents somewhere outside the community, like to the zoo, garden, restaurants or some type of outside activity. They also have regular activities inside every day."
