Senior Living in Nassau County, NY

"My mom is in Atria Tanglewood. They take very good care of her, they are very nice to her, and they're very helpful to her. She's 98, and she tells me that she feels very secure in their care. Everybody's very friendly. They all know me on a first name basis, and I like the security at the front desk. They don't let any strangers in. Everybody has to sign in. I particularly like Virginia. She's an extraordinary person. She was the one that showed us the place. We went to three different assisted living places, and we liked this one the best. I have tasted the food at the holiday parties. Some of the food is good. Some of the food, I'm not crazy about. It's very clean. I walk in there, I'm really happy because it smells good. They really keep the building nice. They vacuum and clean every day. Sometimes my mom, unfortunately, will have an accident, when she's in her apartment and they come right away and they shampoo her rug and clean it. They're really good like that. They offer so much there. She's played bingo and she has gone to a couple of the concerts once in a while. The activities are great. Vinny and Taylor coordinate the activities. They had this tie dye designing for shirts. My mother went down to check it out, but she didn't participate in it. At least they got her out to see it. They do fake bowling outside in the garden area. They do pretend horse racing. They have people come in and play music and they have concerts, movies, and arts and crafts. I have a lot of people that I like there. It's a great place. I chose this place because I like the rooms better. I like that they have a sink in the kitchen area. The other places you had to go to the bathroom to wash your hands. This place had everything that my mom needed."

"We toured Sunrise of North Lynbrook. They showed us the cafeteria in this facility, but they didn't offer food. They showed us where the residents would be eating. Everything was top-notch. It was very clean. As you walk in, you're greeted by somebody at the desk. It was a secure place, and they offered a lot."

"I'm in Atria on Roslyn Harbor. I have spent 20 years in the military moving every two years. This is the smartest move I have ever made. The people are extremely friendly, courteous, and helpful. They will go out of their way to help you in anything that you need. The rooms are large and beautiful. The views are great. They have wonderful entertainment. They have everything you need. The food is not gourmet. It's an institutional type food, but it is more than adequate. You have a large choice and they will fix anything you ask them to fix. Housekeeping is outstanding. They clean once a week and they do an unbelievably great job. You have enough activity to keep you occupied all day. It's a little expensive, but for what they have available for you, it's more than worth it."

From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming, warm, and full of life. The staff is not only professional but also incredibly kind and attentive—they truly treat residents like family. "Atria Park of Great Neck is the best in terms of cleanliness, level of care, and professionalism. They're top-notch. My father's been there for two weeks now and I visited him many times. The only problem he complains about is the lack of Chinese-speaking staff over there. They have someone who is Chinese, but there's only one and she's also the nurse supervisor. So, I don't want her to be bogged down by this question because she has her duty already. Beyond that, his room is OK. The environment is nice. This place is good. As far as the staff, I don't have much to complain about. They are pretty good. I haven't seen the meals up close because they don't allow family in the dining room but the setting is very good. They escort my father to the dining room for three meals. So, he has enough exposure, including the trip to the dining room, activities, and all that. The facility itself, compared to the other places I visited, is very clean. There's no smell in the air. They're relatively new, in fact, compared to other places. I was there the other day and I've seen their activity that involves the whole residency. They try and the participation from the residents is good (if they can participate). People who do not have the mental or physical capacity, are present, but they don't necessarily have people to help them really to fully enjoy the environment. It's pretty expensive. If there is something that can be improved, that would be the cost side, but I don't think that's something wrong. There's a slight delay in their response to someone who presses the request button, but it's minor. If they could allow my father to have an electric wheelchair, it would probably help him some, because he is not fully mobile on one side so a regular wheelchair is not all that useful, but they don't allow it. He has to be moved around by a person. They respond to requests like "Can I get a better bed for him to get out?" and they ordered a hospital bed for him. So that helped. I asked whether they could get a better seat cushion because he is not able to sit in a regular wheelchair for a long time and they respond to that sort of thing. They're minor things. I don't think it's a big deal."

"We toured Atria Cutter Mill. They have lovely staff and nice facilities. It was good. They provide three meals a day. They had limited kitchens. They had a microwave and a refrigerator. I don't remember if they had a stove. If they did, it was a very small stove. My uncle likes to cook, and he would not be able to make some of his cakes and cookies that he likes to share. So, that would not be the optimal choice."

"I am a resident of Orchard Estate of Woodbury. It's only about three years old and small, maybe a hundred people. They have a lot of activities, and it is near my family. Everything is brand new. It's very clean. They have outdoor walks, and a bus takes you on trips if you want to go to the supermarket and the drugstore. They have exercise classes. If you want to stay in your room, you can stay in your room. They have a dining room, and they have three meals a day. The food could have been better. The staff is very nice. They know everybody by name. The value is a little expensive."

"The rooms are well-kept, spacious, and bright. The staff are all friendly and genuinely seem like they love what they do. My mom is really thriving there"

"My parents moved into Sunrise of Plainview. The memory care facility is only about 13 units. The thing that drove us to Sunrise was that both my mother and my father could be in the same room, and that was very important to us. The care they're receiving is exceptional, in our opinion. They seem to be thriving there. My father, with his dementia, wasn't speaking much at home, and now he's talking a little bit. So, I guess their interactions are helping them. The staff is very caring. We go there all the time with the grandchildren at different times of the day, and the level of care is always the same. So, we're very happy with our choice. They have a 1-bedroom apartment with a little seating area, a little bathroom, and a little mini refrigerator and a sink, which they don't need. They have choices for food. If I go there at lunchtime or dinnertime, I can purchase a meal and sit with them and have the same meal that they're having. The memory care facility is secure and they can't get out. You need a code to get in and out. They have scheduled activities. They have bingo, people coming in to sing, they have dogs coming in, TVs, trivia, and all sorts of things. We're very happy with them being there."

"Esplanade of Woodmere was beautiful. It's all memory care. But I don't think socially it would be an option for my uncle because they're too far along in dementia. And my uncle would not have been able to move to an assisted living floor because they don't have that there. The staff who gave the tour was nice, helpful, and friendly. She was informative on what I should be doing for my uncle. She took her time to sit down with me and my family and speak with us. The units were studios. They're newly renovated, so it's brand new."

"We like Christian Fellowship House. It is a beautiful setting, and the people there seem fantastic. We are putting my parents in there together. However, they don't have any rooms at the moment, so we would have to wait. They also have a staircase, so I was a little concerned about that for my mom. It was a historic house, but it was very cozy and homey. We liked the people. One of the owners toured us. She was very knowledgeable, gave us a lot of information, and was very understanding of our situation. It was nice to talk to her."

"My brother-in-law is now in Sands Point Center for Health and Rehabilitation. Right now, we're very, very happy with them. They show a lot of care. It's a very happy and caring staff. They have a complete monthly activity calendar that they use for anyone interested in joining any one of the activities. They have scrabble because he plays scrabble. It's a full calendar. The place is clean, neat, and well-maintained. They got a full staff all the time. The nursing stations are good; they're always manned. It's worth the money."

"The facility looks to be in great shape. Our tour guide, AD, did a great job of showing us the facility and giving us all the pertinent information. We will definitely consider this facility."

"The Regency Assisted Living is beautiful, beautiful, and beautiful. The only thing with them is that there is a waiting list for memory care. It is almost an hour to get home, and I wanted something that's a little closer. It was clean and very nice. The memory care was in a locked facility. There is a lot of stimulation. It smells wonderful. The staff was lovely. There are a lot of amenities. Everybody seemed very happy. However, the drawback was the location and the waiting list. The room was a single room, and it was very nice. The staff who gave the tour was wonderful. She was very nice, and she answered all my questions. The facility was beautiful. My only complaint is that it didn't have a parking lot, and you had to park across the street."
