I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I visited my uncle and aunt at The Leisure World of Maryland. It's beautiful. It's gorgeous. I can't say enough about it. It's very well taken care of and the people are nice. The people are wonderful down there. My cousin has met the staff and she said they are wonderful. She asked how she could bring her cat and they told her she could bring her cat but should have them updated with their shots. Their parking is underneath the building. It's wonderful. They live up on the 16th floor. I thought they would be upset because that's high. They've always been in a home that is down. Well, the two of them like it up there. They're enjoying life and I'm glad for their senior years. That's a good way. They're both in their 90s. They have tennis courts and a swimming pool.

I've been living here at Leisure World of Maryland for over eight years now. There's always something to do here. I've been involved in some of them, like in the chapel, which is within Leisure World. We have our own kitchen. You buy your own food, and you cook your own food. Most of the staff members are very nice and helpful. There are some things that they could improve upon, like upgrading some things in the units and stuff like that. But on the whole, the facility is clean and taken care of very well. They have a clubhouse that has a swimming pool, tennis courts, and pickleball courts. They show movies. There's art, nature, and anything else that you want here.

Do nor let your parents move here. Intrusive authoritative staff. No one give any thought to how they are going to move out when they move in and the burden and cost involved.

I visited this facility

I went to Leisure World of Maryland. There are lots of activities there. I think the prices are very reasonable. It's also pretty. I had seen their amenities like the clubhouse, the swimming pool, and workout rooms. I've looked at a lot of the places there, and the grounds are very, very pretty. The rooms I saw were very nice. There was one very spacious apartment, and the price was reasonable. I'm interested in the little cottages with maybe two bedrooms. The employees that were working with me were very nice, very professional, and friendly at the time. We ate there and the food was very good. I liked it.

I am/was a resident of this facility

I'm a resident of Leisure World of Maryland for 22 years now. It has been fairly nice over the years. I live in a townhouse. They have churches inside, and right outside the gate, there is a shopping center, several restaurants, and cleaners. There's a medical center inside, which I appreciate. Aside from townhouses, they have high rises, single-family homes, and homes that are one level. In terms of activities, they have all sorts of classes, pottery, painting, and things like that. They have maintenance people, but you have to pay for what they do. They have three restaurants within the gate. However, it's costly here.

I moved into Leisure World of Maryland. It's for anyone over 55. It's an independent living and I am quite satisfied with the medical center they have, the various entertainment, clubs, etc. I look forward to being here for a while. People have been living here for years, so it must be satisfactory. We moved here about 10 years ago then we moved back to our house. We lived here for three years. We came back because we were quite satisfied with the conditions. They offer a lot. It's up to the individual how they want to take advantage. I think anyone who is looking for a retirement place would be well served coming here. They have a variety of facilities. They have a ten-story condo where we live, and they have cottages and small facilities. We're quite satisfied. The apartments are quite large. We have a three-bedroom and a balcony. It's beautiful because you have the golf course, the swimming pool and all the other facilities you can see and it's enclosed and it's quite comfortable. The grounds are well taken care of. They have a health club and tennis courts. Right next door, there's a shopping center, giant and small restaurants and shops, and they have a shuttle bus. One reason we're coming back at our age is that we can't drive. They have one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments and some of them have kitchens that are large enough to eat in. There's a fence all around it and you have security guards at the three entrances. We have stickers to get through. Each building has sufficient security, so it's very safe. The staff is very helpful. Each building has its own staff. They have professional staff that does the plumbing, electrical, and anything you need. There are three or four restaurants right next door. They have a post office there and there is a bank inside Leisure World. The apartment is maintained, kept clean, and kept up-to-date. The condo fee is a little high. I don't use the services, but you have all of them. There's no reason to leave this place once you move in. We don't participate, but they have many activities. There are also several religious groups and clubs. If you want to participate, you can be busy every day. There's a nursing home or assisted living facility right nearby if you need to move. They're expensive, but you're getting value for your money. Landscaping is very beautiful. You're getting your money's worth.

Leisure World of Maryland was lovely, but it was way over our budget. It's fantastic. Everything there is wonderful. The amenities are great. They have all kinds of activities. That's the top of the line. My first cousin used to live there, and she passed away last year, but she lived there for close to twenty years. It's got everything that almost all of us would want. Ample parking, everything. Everybody I encountered from the maintenance people to the people in the conference rooms, in the restaurant, when you call and ask for something, for the maintenance people to come for whatever, everyone is outstanding. It's superb in every way. I have no negative things to say about the Leisure world, none whatsoever. They have a tennis court, a swimming pool, they have a place for karaoke, and they have a church on the grounds. They have a giant food store right at the compound. They've got a strip mall full of good stores there. They have transportation for the residents, you can get anywhere on their facilities by their bus during the daytime. There's a bus that comes by that would take you anywhere you need to go. I've never met a rude staff member at Leisure World and I have visited for almost 20 years. They have two restaurants, and they serve two different kinds of food. There's one that's open for lunch hour for breakfast and things up until maybe 4:30. And they serve some salads, breakfast food, and whatever. They have brunch on Sunday. Some of that food is fantastic. They have special nights where they're serving big meals for the people for Christmas or Thanksgiving. The meals you can order like a normal restaurant. They have activities where the residents can pay for themselves to go on trips, they go to see plays, anything you can think of. They have classes and teach you how to dance. They are expensive, and considering how nice it is, you get your money's worth.

I have a friend that lives in Leisure World of Maryland so I have gone down there and spent some time in her apartment which is lovely. It's an independent living and it looks pretty like what I want. There are activities but the clubhouse was not quite up to functioning totally. There are several different styles of apartments. There are garden apartments, some mid-rises, and there are also 1-story places with garages. They have a pool in the clubhouse and they have a bunch of rooms that are used for game rooms. They play sports games. I think they have an outdoor and indoor pool. They also have a couple of eateries that are kind of cute and a nice place to have a nice lunch.

Great decision

This is an active 55+ adult community with exceptional facilities: 18 hole golf course, tennis courts, new exercise facility (opening Fall 2017), on site medical, dental, and physical therapy offices, and dozens of clubs for every interest. Since the day my wife and I moved here it has exceeded our expectations. Anyone over 55 who is thinking about moving into the Washington D.C. area or is thinking about downsizing and is looking for an active retirement life must include a tour of this community.

Behind the curve management. Affordable housing, but fees keep going up. No fine dining - several cases of food poisoning recently at LW restaurants in Clubhouse 1. Management dislikes transparency & community newspaper "LW News" censors info to make community look good. Not healthy lifestyle oriented - huge resistance to instituting smoke free housing policies - thus second hand smoke and smoking hazards creating disastrous fires/explosions are huge problems. Not a green community, frustrating progressive-minded residents. Cell phone calls drop frequently. Governance is homeowner association style and run by people who want to keep the community dated. No visionary, cost saving leadership.

My mom has lived at Leisure World for 12 years now. It’s great. They have every amenity that you could want. It is independent, so there isn't a dining area unless you want to go to one of the restaurants that’s there. It is a great area, and it is gated, so you don’t have to worry about security.

I have lived here 3 years. There’s good and not-so-good about it. It is gated, but as you will see it’s very easy to get in (a city bus even travels inside many times a day). There is a lot of political fighting —e.g., over whether to spend $5 million renovating the administration building, the way the Board of Directors is run (it seems many decisions are just handed down to residents), removal of large numbers of trees, and the high expense of maintaining a golf course actually used by few. Many residents feel that their HOA fees are very high, so be sure you run ALL the numbers that would be involved if you are thinking about buying here. The recreational facilities (e.g., pool and gym) are small and old. The supermarket/pharmacy store right outside the gate is limited and lousy (compare it to others locally of the same chain). Community is not quick access to Washington, DC. There are lots of clubs and activities, many of which meet weekdays during the day (note that if you have a job). Just be sure to do your research.

I'm a current resident of Leisure World and the biggest deal about it for me is that it is offered to people 55 and up. Most other places' age requirement is from 62 and up. They also have a shopping center right next door to it with everything you need, I mean seriously everything, like doctors, pharmacy, a huge grocery store, dry cleaning services, liquor store, restaurants, etc. All the amenities are right there and you're only two minutes away to have access to literally everything. That is one thing that makes this place so good. Also when you get older, you want to feel like you're safe and secure and I especially like this place because it provides a safe community for me. There are condominiums and coops here at Leisure World. For me, I have a two-story townhouse. The staff is great! You make a phone call if you have a problem and they're there. They also have activities for their residents. I absolutely recommend this place to others.

When I went there I saw that it was very clean, very nice and very comfortable. The staff was very polite, nice and helpful. They had golf courses, they had so many different swimming pools. They had all kinds of activities going there. The price was a bit on the upper scale. A two-bedroom with two full bath, a shower and the other with a bath tub, is like $1,450 or $1,500. It was a very good facility. If I had the money, I would move there.

Leisure World is a place for people over 65. The place is terrific. The grounds are clean. The people are friendly. Everything is neat. Basically you buy your own condo and you live in. It has a very good neighborhood.

Leisure World was the most attractive facility we visited. The buildings were just right and the place was spacious. We really liked that. The staff were friendly but since it was an independent living facility, the residents seldom associated with them.

Leisure World is a very nice facility. The residents here have the choice of living in either villas or or Condos. The villas are for those residents that do not need assistance; the condos are for those residents that need more assistance. In the Condos meals can be delivered to the residents and nursing help is available. There is a club house where meals are served and residents can partake in various activities such as shuffleboard, swimming or card games. The grounds are well maintained and this is a secure facility.

This is one of the many Leisure World properties. There are a range of housing options. There are also a wealth of clubs and activities to get involved in. One of the nice features is that most of the residents are still very active and involved. Folks seem to move here when they want to simplify their lives - no yard work or snow shoveling. Neighbors are very compatible and you can get as involved as you want. The only downside is that you have not taken care of the inevitable need at some point for nursing or greater health care. There is no on campus nursing facility.
