I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

I was warned to not take my father to Bickford but I ultimately made the decision to to go to Bickford. We were told about the great care he would receive, that they were able to handle his declining mobility, and the facility overall looks very inviting. This would be a decision that would end up being the worst 6 months for all of us. The call button wait times were 30 minutes or longer sometimes with my dad laying on the floor waiting for help to arrive. He had an untreated UTI, which I was told they were taking care of and they did not. He ended up in the hospital for over a week. When returning the did not give him medication for 7 days because there was a miscommunication. They are understaffed and cannot handle bigger medical needs but the DON with try to convince you they can. They cannot. During his first week at Bickford he never received a shower. He didn't get one until I complained. One time at dinner two staff members sent him to dinner with a blanket over his lap. I showed up and when his blanket slipped down I noticed that he did not have any pants or underwear on. The fact that his dignity was not honored was so upsetting. When I approached the staff about it I was told it was hard to put pants on him because he had a catheter. I had to constantly check in to make sure he was receiving the care he needed. My list of negatives is too long! Do not go here if your loved one has medical needs. This place would only be good for more independent people. We had to leave after 6 months in order to get the care we needed. There are some great nurses there but they are understaffed and not everyone is trained to provide the best care. They are not proactive with medical concerns and the doctors they use from Hansa group are not doing what we were told they would be doing. I was warned to not go here and I did not listen. Let this be your warning.

I toured Bickford of Greenwood. I like the community a lot. The room was not big, but it was nice. I can't remember what I liked least, but I did like it. And the person that was the rep was very nice. I liked the facility. It felt very cozy like home. The atmosphere inside was very nice. It was very welcoming.

I toured Bickford of Greenwood. It was fine. It was always locked, which was very nice. It's close to Highway 135, and the traffic there was busy, so I think it was a good thing. The apartment was roomy and had a nice set-up. I think it was a little smaller than the one that we saw at the other place. They have everything there. They had a beauty shop and exercise. The staff who toured us was very friendly and very thorough. When I asked questions, she knew the answers. The dining area was very nice. They do it like a restaurant where they have a menu, a waiter comes and takes the order and delivers it.

Provider Response

Hi Cheryl, we greatly appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review. We are pleased to hear that your tour of Bickford of Greenwood went well, and you were able to experience our friendly home like atmosphere. Bickford of Greenwood looked amazing. Everything they offered was great. The staff seemed personable and genuinely cared. Everything seemed like it was in place and they did everything that needed to be taken care of. Upkeep of the place was nice, and it was tidy. Restaurants and hospitals are nearby.

Provider Response

Danny, So happy to hear that you recommend Bickford of Greenwood. We're glad that you agree that it is truly a special place with a skilled and compassionate team.

I visited this facility

We toured Bickford of Greenwood. We love that. It was very nice, but it was over our price limit. We love the community. It was a single story, so we didn't have to worry about elevators or anything like that. It's probably a little bit older property, but it's very well-maintained. We were very impressed. When we walked in, there was a young girl, I think she's one of the granddaughters of one of the residents, and she was singing songs with the residents, and they seemed to be having a good time. It was very nice. I would be very comfortable with Mom living there and she probably would be, but the price was a little bit out of our price range. It felt like an apartment complex; it did not feel like assisted living. They have a square configuration, you have the hallways going around that, and everyone has an individual apartment. I kind of like that it's a little bit older building. It's kind of rustic. It's a wonderful facility.

Provider Response

Jonathan, we are delighted we could provide you with such a positive experience! While we are disappointed we may not get the opportunity to take care of your loved one, we want to thank you once again for taking the time to let us know how we did.

Bickford of Greenwood seemed homey. It didn't seem as spacious as the other place though, so it's a little bit more cramped. Upkeep and cleanliness were adequate. The person who assisted me was knowledgeable and willing to help, and she did call me and say that they would assist in moving also. We were not there during the meal, but we saw the dining area and it seemed kind of on the smaller side. I think it's good that there were not as many residents there. I liked the courtyard and they have a bus that takes trips with their residents, so that was also good.

Provider Response

Hi Sarah, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. While it appears we met your expectations in some regard, we appreciate open to feedback to help us improve.

Although I alerted staff of my mother’s UTI, the UTI was left untreated for four days (with no monitoring by staff) and she ultimately required a trip to the emergency room and remained hospitalized for eight days. They are short staffed, and the aides are so busy taking food orders, serving and cleaning up, that they don’t have time to notice changes in resident’s conditions. My mother’s mental status had rapidly declined as a result of the UTI, and no one heeded my request to start a prophylactic antibiotic. In addition to this, when my mother fell last April, they did not request an X-ray because her leg “didn’t look swollen or red.” They left her reclined in her chair. However, when I arrived to visit her the next day, she couldn’t put weight on the leg. They told me to take her by car to Ortho-Indy for an X-ray. Ortho Indy determined that she had a comminuted fracture of the left tibia that required surgery. In addition to the tibia break, she had also suffered cervical fractures! Let’s just say that after these two strikes, we moved her out. The facility may look nicely decorated, but looks can be deceiving.

Bickford of Greenwood is on the top of our list. We felt that it was very homey. It doesn't look institutionalized. The lady was very friendly, very informative, and helpful. She tended to our emotional needs. The residents were all welcoming. It didn't feel like I was in a facility. They have a walking club, which would help my mother. They have cards, bingo, and movie night. The priest from the church that my mother goes to comes down once a week for communion, and that's important.

Provider Response

Thanks so much for the recommendation, Kathy. Bickford of Greenwood is an exceptional place!

Bickford of Greenwood didn't look like a nursing home at all. It was very homey and seemed to be very one on one with their residents. They wanted to know my mom's specialty things, like what she likes to eat and drink and they were taking notes. If she were to be there, I think she'd be taken more care of. The staff was all very happy and cheerful. They even shook my hand and introduced themselves.

Provider Response

Hi Linda, I'm so happy to hear you felt this way during your time at Bickford of Greenwood. The feeling of home and being surrounded by family is always what we strive for! Thank you for sharing!

My mom is in Bickford of Greenwood and it's been great. They're just like little apartments. She's staying in a 1-bedroom apartment. The staff all seem to be very helpful and I'm happy with the place. She's just not excited about the food, it's too fancy for her. They play bingo and they have all kinds of activities going on. They post a monthly schedule of when all the activities are going to go on. They have ice cream trucks come in and those kinds of things. I think it was ridiculously expensive though. There's nothing cheap about it at all. I hate to think of what it's going to cost when we have to go over to the memory care part of it because she does have dementia. She was just at the borderline so she's staying in assisted living for a while.

We are thinking of choosing Bickford of Greenwood for my dad because of the location and the cost. It is high-caliber care, but it has a great staff-to-resident ratio; they have more staff than actual residents there. I would rate the staff a "high four" because of their personality and how they get along with my dad. He is not an easy man, but they love him. He tried the food, and he liked it. The facility is clean, well kept, and renovated. They have a salon. In the memory care, the activities are monitored, but they have fitness activities.

Provider Response

Hi Dolores, Thank you for taking the time to write such an excellent review. We are so pleased that you and your dad enjoyed your time at Bickford of Greenwood. Let us know if you need anything further.

We chose Bickford of Greenwood for my husband because they were able to get him the therapy that he needed. He seems very happy, and he likes the food. They come when he needs assistance. He's just depressed because he's by himself and I can't visit. The staff is very nice. The place is very, very nice, clean and well-decorated. The only thing I can say is that they seem short on staff, but I like that he's gonna get the care that he needs. He's a little bit far from the cafeteria with the disability that he has, so they often have to take a wheelchair to take him. The layout is no worse than any other, but the therapy comes to him, so that's a really good thing for him. He hasn't done any of their activities yet in terms of the disability that he has, so we're hoping he improves. It's a really nice facility.

The problem with Bickford of Greenwood was that once my mom's money runs out they don't accept Medicare; they're all private pay. The place was clean, and there was no smell like most nursing homes or other similar places. It was a very pleasant and nice community. Everybody was very friendly, and the staff knew everybody. If any of the residents came out of their rooms, the staff would say hi to them all; it was a really nice atmosphere. They had an exercise area, a craft room, an area where you do rehab-type things, like they teach you how to help yourself in the kitchen and things like that. So that was very nice. We didn't trust our mom to cook anymore, so it was a nice set up that the rooms only had a microwave and refrigerator. When you walk in, it looks like a regular nursing home, but everything was nice and clean. The size of the rooms and the showers were sufficient.

Bickford of Greenwood is very nice, warm and inviting. The staff is very nice. It looked like they did a lot of things as a group and they had relationships with the residents rather than just being caregivers. The dining area was very nice and their menu looked pretty good. The only thing against them is they don't have sufficient parking, but they said they're working on that. They also don't accept Medicaid.

I am a friend or relative of a current/past resident

Bickford of Greenwood is a small place with very caring and loving people. They engage my mom all the time, and they give her things to keep her busy. She's happy there. It's like a big group home, warm, and friendly. The food is all home-cooked, fresh, and they have a chef. The staff has been great, but I'm sure there's still room for improvement. They take the residents on trips two or three times a week, they take them to the park once a week to do morning walks, they have exercises every day in the lobby, they have music time every day, and they bring in people to do their hair and fingernails.

I wasn't exceptionally pleased with it Bickford of Greenwood. They serve three meals a day, and I believe they have the limousine or van service that would take the residents to doctors' offices. It was out of our price range, and I didn't really like the rooms and apartments because they were smaller. It was nothing I was interested in.

Bickford of Greenwood had a very nice setting. They had two areas: one for basic assisted living and another for memory care. They had everything for activities, including puzzles, bingo, dancing, music, and crafts.

Bickford of Greenwood is the facility we chose for my mother, and we loved it. It was excellent. The surrounding was very nice. The staff was excellent, and very caring. It was sort of their main mission to care for their residents. The rooms were in great size, and very nicely arranged.

The dining area at Bickford of Greenwood is very airy and open. It was very inviting, neat, and clean. It made me want to eat there. It sort of reminds you of outside dining. The sanitation of this facility looked fabulous. The only thing I didn't like about it is the rooms are incredibly small. The staff was wonderful though. It was not clinical, and they seem to be very friendly and inviting. I can't come up with anything bad to say about them at this point.

I am a friend or relative of a resident

We have found Bickford of Greenwood, and my sister-in-law is very happy. The staff was very warm, friendly, and accommodating. They have parties and a lot of socializing, and she is also able to get a ride from there to go shopping occasionally. They have the kind of amenities that we have been hoping would appeal to her. She has been really accommodated by so many people and befriended. She goes with a particular couple who live there. She goes with them to church on Sundays, and she really appreciates that. She will be taken to the doctor, they take care for her well. It was warm and friendly. It was clean. I ate with her one or two times, and the food was good. She has been happy with the meals, and everybody that I talked to was just very open and happy. She has a very little studio apartment, and she was able to move in her furniture so it’s become very familiar to her.
