The Best Communities in Hancock County, IN

"I visited Charter Senior Living of Gateway Park in Greenfield. They have independent living quarters where you're in with a lot of other people, and then they have individual houses with just wonderful accommodations. It's very expensive. They're running around $3,000 to $3,500 a month, and that's pretty heavy, but it's comparable to the prices that I've checked all around. When I am ready, that's the one I will probably use. It's just very nice, quiet, secluded, and has all the amenities that go with it. You can have independent living, and I still have my car, so I will have a garage, and everything, just like living in a regular residential area. They're just like regular houses. It has all kinds of restaurants and a lot of traffic around the area. It's also roughly about 10 miles from my current home, so that's the one I would want to use. In the big apartment complex, they have a swimming pool, a recreational workout, and stuff for staying fit. The workout room has stationary bikes and walking paths where you can walk your dog. They have food there that they fix, just like a restaurant. The price on the big house with all the apartments was a couple of hundred dollars less than the individual units. You just come out of your independent living house and walk into the big apartment-like place, and you have your breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They even have snacks. I've had lunch out there a couple of times, and the food was excellent. I've sampled some of their breakfasts, and a couple of times I was out there and had dinner with them. It's excellent, and everything about it is clean. It also smells good. I've found nothing that turned me against it."

"I toured Traditions at Brookside. They had a very nice homey feel when I walked in there. The staff was all super friendly and polite. They were very good at communication. Their common area was very nice. They had like an open library section and everything, plenty of chairs, a TV or two set up, and whatnot. So there was plenty of space for everybody."

"What a wonderful facility. My mom moved here Nov 2019. So, she's been there 3 years and her care has been excellent. Even through the pandemic, they provided excellent care. When we couldn't visit, they arranged FaceTime visits. Then we got to have outdoor visits. When I go to visit mom, the staff is always saying hello to residents by name. I've only seen smiles from the staff. Her apartment was recently renovated, and a 1 BR is perfect size for her. There are plenty of activities provided, and the residents get to recommend others they would like available to them. For mom, the best activities include the visits from animals, and the music programs. :) "

"I'm in Independence Village Fishers East. We have some problems, but they're being worked on. The workers are good, and their attitude is good. They're pleasant and most of them say hello. They do their job well. I'm happy with them. The food could be improved. It usually tastes good, but the cooking leaves a lot to be desired, like the vegetables are cooked until they're really soft. They use too much salt for people that are usually on a low-salt diet. The food as it comes is not always like it's addressed in the menu. They don't keep the painting up-to-date, with chips and marks on the walls. The carpet is very outdated and not clean. The colors are good. They're either tan or gray. The accessories that they put out, benches and dressers along the hallway, are very, very nice. We have an ant problem in the spring and they bring a maintenance team out for that but that doesn't always take care of it. They have a lot of activities. They have bingo, many different kinds of cards, a happy hour, they bring in entertainment several times a week, cooking lessons, and lectures from different experts on the subject. My only concern with the activities is we don't have enough staff to cover everything. Sometimes activities are canceled because we've only got two people in the activity department and they're not enough to cover everything that's scheduled. That's not their fault. It's corporate's fault. If I had a house or another kind of apartment where all the amenities aren't included, I would be paying almost as much as I am here. The good thing is you've got camaraderie and friendship. It's like a big family. It's been good for me to move in here, to be around people, because I'm a widow and I was living alone, and that's the case with a lot of residents here. Most of them moved here because their children were close by. I think I get enough bang for my buck, although some people pay a lot higher than I do and I don't know that they get as much bang for their buck."
