"No one wants to be in the critical position of finding senior care for their loved ones in a crisis situation, yet that is exactly where our family found ourselves about two years ago. We had concerns over cost, conditions, care, and something surprising that rose to top importance was the food. In our search, Independence Village of Avon was a favorite for several reasons. From the first interaction, we experienced a very welcoming and happy environment that was everything we wanted for our family. There was an active community of friendly seniors who seemed to really enjoy being together. If you walked through the common areas, you'd find small groups playing cards or participating in the organized activities, like BINGO, manicures, or group outings to restaurants or other entertainment. We were also impressed with the size of the rooms and thrilled that my in-laws were able to remain together in an apartment big enough to have a king-sized bedroom suite, and a "great room" (kitchen/dining/living area) that was large enough to accommodate a couch, love seat, TV, coffee tables, desk, kitchen table, small hutch and still have more than enough space to safely navigate with a wheelchair. This really made the apartment feel like the home they had to leave. Everything about the apartment was made to be very accessible. Their 2nd-story window looked to the exterior of the property, which is adjacent to a local park, and faced a tree line with lots of birds to view. We were even able to place a special bird feeder in their window that allowed them to add food from the inside, while birds entered from the exterior; it has become a hotspot for cardinals, blue birds, robins, and many more. Included in this apartment was regular cleaning and laundry - which allowed our family to focus on more important things. The common spaces outside of the resident apartments are well-maintained, frequently updated, and accessible to residents of all abilities. These areas include hallways, library, plant room, gym, movie room, private dining room, courtyard, and activity/social rooms. With the unanticipated lifestyle changes came the need for a lot of assistive care due to memory and mobility issues. The Independence Village care staff, which is on-call at the push of a button, has become an extended family to us - and my in-laws love interacting with them - not just when they need care, but also when they just need someone to talk to or help turn on a TV. While assisted living is our current need, we are happy to know that there is memory care in the same facility should that ever be a need. On our initial tour, we got to sit down to a meal in the main dining room, which reminded our children of their experience on a cruise ship. The food options and multiple courses were all very good. After our loved ones moved in, they also learned that they could request alternatives to the daily menu if they just wanted something standard, like a hamburger or scrambled eggs. While not everything is a favorite dish, the dietary staff are very accommodating in finding something that works for every taste. Making the change from a private residence to life in an assisted-living community is hard. We've learned a lot from this season of life and the team that is needed to provide the care our loved ones deserve. We have had challenges, frustrations, and lots of questions - and every time we've shared these with the leadership at Independence Village, they have been responsive, respectful, and solution-seeking. This is something we really appreciate. There were many things that drove our decision to make Independence Village the next home for our seniors, but the staff - from front desk to dietary to maintenance and housekeeping to caregivers - keep us here."
