"I was able to visit The Chamberlin in Hampton. As far as I know, it's pretty much independent living. I don't know if I have anything else and I didn't ask about it. I liked it. It was unique and it's right on the Chesapeake Bay so its location was particularly interesting. It's an older building that has been updated. It used to be a hotel, I guess, and it's been upgraded into senior living. The amenities and everything were nice. They had an indoor swimming pool and there's a beach outside which is just within walking distance. I was quite impressed with it. They had done a pretty nice job on all the common areas. All the rooms had granite countertops and that kind of stuff too so they had updated it nicely."

"My parents are moving in. We loved them so much, that we just signed the contract. You can tell that they care about their residents very much. They know every single one of them by name, by heart. It just blew my mind. They treated everybody with respect, calling them by their last name, Mr. so and so. It was awesome. The amenities were the other big seller for us. They have an activity schedule that's ever-changing and very diverse, and it is very accommodating. The residents seemed very excited about the activities. They provide two meals a day. We met a lot of staff. We only saw a few rooms though. They were being renovated, so we hadn't seen the finished product yet. It was really good even though it was in a renovation state. They have different activities as far as hobbies from puzzles to crafts to board games and card games. They had them throughout the week at different times. They had trips to museums, restaurants, and movies, and they had regular scheduling for doctors' appointments every week. They only required 72-hour notice for scheduling. They have a chapel, a salon, a library, and a grotto in the backyard for gardening. It was a really beautiful garden for at least walking and sitting."

"We are choosing Acclaim at East Beach for mom. It's a very active community. It's brand new, so everything is up to code. The apartment is beautiful, and the people are really friendly, both the staff and the residents. The menu looks wonderful, but I have not tried the food. They have classes all the time, classes in arts and different books. There were people doing puzzles, playing bingo, and going on trips. They take them to the movies and the theater. They have shuttles to take the residents to the grocery store and doctor's appointments. The staff was very friendly. The apartment mom is moving into has never been occupied before."

"We toured Harmony at Independence. Their apartments were beautiful. It had a more modern feeling, it was spacious, it had a full kitchen area. The staff member was very informative, she was really nice. Very well-maintained, it was a gorgeous building. Amenities were the same as the other place we went to, three meals a day, a tremendous amount of activities, and the grounds were really well kept. The meals offered sounded really fantastic, and it was really well-maintained, nice looking apartments."

"My wife is in Harper's Station Yorktown. They care about her. The staff is very good. They have a licensed nurse, and she takes care of her and makes sure she gets her medicine. She's an eater. They fed me a good meal. It's a brand new facility, so it's perfect. They have plenty of activities for all the residents. It's just that my wife is too far into her dementia, so she doesn't participate. It's a lot of money for sleeping and eating."

"I visited Colonial Harbor, and it will be the one I'm going to move into. I saw one apartment that's ideal for what I want right now. They had a lot of activities, and what interested me was they go to the YMCA at least once a week. They had a library, billiard table, and chess tables. One problem was they allowed smoking in the Atrium, and as soon as I walked in, I could smell cigarette smoke."

"Just a short note of thanks to FCI. Bing & Bunny Bassett are close friends and I recently visited and stayed in the guest room on the 3rd floor. Everything was perfect and a place of rest close to my friends. Thank you for the wonderful care that you provide for my dear friends. Your staff is excellent. "The people were very polite and nice to me. The parking situation was very bad, though. They had physical therapy there. The staff was very friendly, well-dressed, and used residents' first names. They seemed to have an active community."

"I was looking for independent living, and I visited one in Chesapeake. I liked Sunstone Apartments because it was far from the city noises like loud music and that kind of thing. It is quiet, and the apartments are wonderful. The apartment has a kitchen, living and dining room area, one bedroom, and a bathroom with lots of closet space. It has a patio outside, and it is nice. The community that it is in is not that large, but it is close to shopping, churches, and dining. It is close to an area that you can go out in, but it is far enough if you just want to take a walk for exercise. They do have a community area or a community room. The apartment complex is not that large, or at least it didn't look that big to me. You don't get a doctor in house, but in the bathroom and in the bedroom there are call buttons or call lights for you, so if you are having trouble during the night, you can always use that to call for assistance. "

"I toured Royal Sail at Bridgeport. They're very, very nice people and the rooms were nice. The one-bedroom was large and very clean, and the hallways were wide. It was just a nice place. They also have a pool, they have places outside for you to sit and it is secure. The apartments had very nice marble countertops, the appliances were very nice, and each room has a balcony. It was just pretty. The place was very clean and neat, the workers were very caring, and the lady that gave us the tour showed me a two-bedroom and a one-bedroom. She went out of her way to show us what was available."

"My mother is going to move to Karolwood Gardens Portsmouth. Upon touring it, the staff was very welcoming. Even though it's an older facility, you can tell it's been well-maintained. I like the fact that they had a handicapped-accessible bathroom inside of the room, and that was important for us, and the affordability, too. It is in a good location for the family to make it easy to visit her and so we were pleasantly surprised. Most of the rooms have kitchenettes. They have a refrigerator, a microwave, and a sink. They had a courtyard and a nice enclosed porch on the front. The person that took me on the tour was the director. Scarlet was very warm and very knowledgeable about senior care. I found her to be very informative, very knowledgeable, and very personable."

"Harbor’s Edge is a huge high-rise. It’s expensive and would be overwhelming for mother. It’s very nice inside, and the rooms are beautiful, but it would be too big for mom. The food was very nice. "
