"I was able to visit The Chamberlin in Hampton. As far as I know, it's pretty much independent living. I don't know if I have anything else and I didn't ask about it. I liked it. It was unique and it's right on the Chesapeake Bay so its location was particularly interesting. It's an older building that has been updated. It used to be a hotel, I guess, and it's been upgraded into senior living. The amenities and everything were nice. They had an indoor swimming pool and there's a beach outside which is just within walking distance. I was quite impressed with it. They had done a pretty nice job on all the common areas. All the rooms had granite countertops and that kind of stuff too so they had updated it nicely."

"The company staff/owners have been incredibly helpful; they attentively listened to my needs and concerns. They expressed genuine empathy and compassion. They reached out to me days later to ensure that I didn’t need anything else, but also reassured me that they know it’s a difficult decision and to ultimately do what’s best for me and my loved one. Praying that my siblings and I can all agree that this is the best place for our mom."

"We toured Harmony at Independence. Their apartments were beautiful. It had a more modern feeling, it was spacious, it had a full kitchen area. The staff member was very informative, she was really nice. Very well-maintained, it was a gorgeous building. Amenities were the same as the other place we went to, three meals a day, a tremendous amount of activities, and the grounds were really well kept. The meals offered sounded really fantastic, and it was really well-maintained, nice looking apartments."

"I toured Harper's Station Yorktown. The people, the community itself, are very welcoming. I got a chance to eat there. They had a lot of choices, and the food was very good. The washer/dryer was good, a closet with doors. That's the only thing I was hesitant about, but good size. This facility is practically new. They have a pool and exercise equipment, and everything you need."

"Just a short note of thanks to FCI. Bing & Bunny Bassett are close friends and I recently visited and stayed in the guest room on the 3rd floor. "I was looking for independent living, and I visited one in Chesapeake. I liked Sunstone Apartments because it was far from the city noises like loud music and that kind of thing. It is quiet, and the apartments are wonderful. The apartment has a kitchen, living and dining room area, one bedroom, and a bathroom with lots of closet space. It has a patio outside, and it is nice. The community that it is in is not that large, but it is close to shopping, churches, and dining. It is close to an area that you can go out in, but it is far enough if you just want to take a walk for exercise. They do have a community area or a community room. The apartment complex is not that large, or at least it didn't look that big to me. You don't get a doctor in house, but in the bathroom and in the bedroom there are call buttons or call lights for you, so if you are having trouble during the night, you can always use that to call for assistance. "

"I toured Royal Sail at Bridgeport. They're very, very nice people and the rooms were nice. The one-bedroom was large and very clean, and the hallways were wide. It was just a nice place. They also have a pool, they have places outside for you to sit and it is secure. The apartments had very nice marble countertops, the appliances were very nice, and each room has a balcony. It was just pretty. The place was very clean and neat, the workers were very caring, and the lady that gave us the tour showed me a two-bedroom and a one-bedroom. She went out of her way to show us what was available."

"My mother is going to move to Karolwood Gardens Portsmouth. Upon touring it, the staff was very welcoming. Even though it's an older facility, you can tell it's been well-maintained. I like the fact that they had a handicapped-accessible bathroom inside of the room, and that was important for us, and the affordability, too. It is in a good location for the family to make it easy to visit her and so we were pleasantly surprised. Most of the rooms have kitchenettes. They have a refrigerator, a microwave, and a sink. They had a courtyard and a nice enclosed porch on the front. The person that took me on the tour was the director. Scarlet was very warm and very knowledgeable about senior care. I found her to be very informative, very knowledgeable, and very personable."

"Harbor’s Edge is a huge high-rise. It’s expensive and would be overwhelming for mother. It’s very nice inside, and the rooms are beautiful, but it would be too big for mom. The food was very nice. "

"The Cottages at Great Bridge was small and convenient to where I needed to be. They didn't have meals. They had very nice, quiet grounds. They also game rooms and social areas for the seniors, which were very acceptable and nice."

"My dad has put a deposit down on The Vero at Chesapeake. It is 2 miles from my home, but it's also a new facility. It's very nice. One of the features that my dad likes a lot is that their dining style is restaurant style. It's open from 7 to 7 and they order from a menu. It's not like you go down on a set time and everything. He likes the fact that he can order what he wants, and he can get breakfast all day if you want. They have a one-bedroom instead of just kind of like the single studio style, so he likes the idea of a separate room. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and very interactive with my dad. They're very informative. It doesn't have maybe as many amenities as the other place, but it has just enough for my dad. They have a theater and a game room area. They have happy hour in the evenings that interest him."

"My mother-in-law is at Greenbrier Senior Apartments. They have a pull cord in every room so if something should happen you just pull it to get help. She still can pretty much take care of herself. We have to do grocery shopping and doctor's appointments but she can still dress and cook for herself. The place is very clean, the staff is wonderful, everybody there is very nice. The leasing manager is super good and when we need something done, they do it right away. My mother-in-law was one of the first residents to move in, she's been there for a long time now, it's been over 13 or 14 years."

"I lived in Cromwell House for over 5 years. I left recently because I decided to live with my children in order to spend more time with them.While I was living at Cromwell House I can say it was an enjoyable experience.The other residents are very friendly and soon became like family.The staff is amazing.They also became like family.They are personable, kind hearted, friendly, and fun people.The activity director makes sure that there is something to participate in everyday.They throw parties on holidays, and sometimes for no reason at all.Everyone brings dishes and it's always just a good time.The activities were one of my favorite parts about living at Cromwell House.Also, I don't drive so the community bus always came in handy.And don't worry, it's totally free of charge.The bus driver takes you to doctor's appointments, shopping stores, and grocery stores and Tuesdays we go on field trips.I loved my one bdrm apartment which was plenty of space for me.I had my own kitchen, plenty of closet and cabinet space and also a huge bathroom. It was just enough space for me to maintain and didn't have to do too much cleaning.It didn't take very long to decorate just how I wanted.Plus my electricity bill was very low, not even $50!And at Cromwell House you don't even have to pay for cable.They provide it for you.I saved so much money living there it was unbelievable.And there was one time I had an accident and fell, and I couldn't get up, they have these pull cords in the bathroom and bedroom and they send help for you.Cromwell House was a very memorable and happy experience for me.All seniors 55 and over looking for a nice place to live, CALL CROMWELL HOUSE. You won't regret it. "
