"We did go to Willow Creek Gracious Retirement Living. It wouldn't fit our budget. We liked the location. It's a nice area, near the interstate. It looked well-kept. We liked the decor. It was very comfortable looking and I thought it was beautiful inside, from the chandeliers and the stairway. It was nice and cozy. The staff was outstanding and very personable. He knew the place well. As far as any questions that we asked, he had the answers right off. He even gave us some literature to take with us for future reference as we left the place, and even recommended another place that might be more in our price range. They have a library and an exercise room."

"My mother-in-law has moved into Lighthouse Pointe by Barclay House. She's in independent care, but they have a company there that we can pay, have a contract per month, and they check on her every couple of hours and make sure they order her food. She can't get to the dining room on her own. She is in independent care, but she broke her arm and needs help. She doesn't sleep in a bed. She can't lie down flat, so she sleeps in an electric recliner, and it's set up like a cute little living room kind of thing. It's the same size as my den. It's got a nice-sized bathroom, and it's roomy enough for her to get in and move around in with a walker. The living room is big enough to move around with a walker. It has a balcony on it. It's open air. It's got lots of windows. The kitchenette has just a little sink, a microwave, a little coffee pot, and that's about it. It's got three closets in it, which I love. She's got one of the smaller units. There are two or three different sizes there, and they are all very nice. Before you move in, they remodel them and paint them, and she had new carpet, new flooring, and new amenities in the bathroom. They did a nice job. For her, it's really nice. The food is excellent. We've eaten a lot of meals with her. They bring the food to her; that's part of the extra money we pay through that other company, but they forget silverware occasionally. They forget little stuff, but for the most part, the food is good, and we haven't had a bad meal yet. Everybody is extremely friendly and helpful. We needed an extra handrail in the bathroom, and they came in and sized it up to how she gets off the toilet, and they came in and maintenance put it up for us the next day. I am extremely pleased with everything about it. Parking is a little tough some days. You have to park out a little further, but for the most part, it's great. I highly recommend it. They have puzzle stations all over the place. They play cards and different things. They have activities that come through. It's very clean."

"The Chamberlin is wonderful. It's a beautiful place. I would recommend it, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is still vibrant because the community is old. The people are old. They are not social, and they are set in their own ways. They have a beautiful dining hall. They offer you 30 meals a month in the cafeteria to use anytime you want to. They have a piano bar and an indoor pool. They have different amenities, such as a pet groomer. They've got everything. If it's just more of a younger group or atmosphere, I would consider it. There is a beautiful view of the Chesapeake Bay. All the ships that come into the harbor go right past it, and if you're into photography, you can take pictures of ships. There is even a little school of dolphins in the summertime that lives nearby that you could see. For what it is, it's beautiful. I've got to be stimulated. I've got to have a community. I've got to have an intellectual conversation. I've got to have people that are willing to live and not waiting to die. That's the only feeling I didn't get good about The Chamberlin. They were accommodating in that, for any apartment that I chose, they were going to change the bathroom from a bathtub to a walk-in shower. They're only doing it by request at no extra cost. They're all ready to converge, but if they don't have to converge, then they won't. They're all ready to change that for me, and I was very well considering it. I can't say anything wrong about The Chamberlain. I recommend it to anybody who wants that type of living and if that's what they're looking for. That would be a place that I would want to move to and spend my later days. It's clean. It smells well. It doesn't smell like Geritol or Vicks. I got two people who toured me. One man was from maintenance and the other lady was from rental, and they were both wonderful. The guy from maintenance said, 'You point it out, and we'll fix it that day,' and he guaranteed it. The girl was in the office for the leasing; she was just as pleasant as she could be. They gave me a full tour, and I think they're looking for a few younger people in there such as myself. I can afford it. It's no big deal, and it's $3,200 a month, and with what they offer, it would be worth it. They offer meals, they offer entertainment, and they offer different things. It's a beautiful complex, but the atmosphere just wasn't there for me. Everywhere I looked, there was somebody on a walker, somebody in a wheelchair, somebody needing assistance with a private nurse. You're as old as you feel, and you're as old as your surroundings, and I'm just too young to feel that damn old. They walked me all through it and showed me everything. We had lunch there. The food was restaurant-style food, if not more. Two ladies prepared the food in the eating kitchen area, but then they had a whole staff that staffed the dining area. You can come down and have a meal, or you can have a meal in your room, and they'll cater it to you, to your room, whatever. They leave no stone unturned. It's an excellent place."

"We liked the fact that Harmony at Harbour View was very clean when we went in. The staff was very willing to help and to assist. The young lady who showed us around was very knowledgeable and friendly. We also had an opportunity to have lunch to be able to taste the food. The staff was very good. They spoke to you and acknowledged that you were there. Everybody was very friendly. Everybody that worked there, if they walked past or whatever, they spoke to you. They had transportation. They had a calendar that showed whatever was going on that week that we could participate in. The units that she showed us were very clean, ready to move in, and accommodating. They had one-bedroom or two-bedroom, and they had a studio. It was just wonderful. It was pricier than the other place and what turns my wife off to all of them, not just this one, is the fact that you have to pay for your spouse. If your two-bedroom started at $3500 and if you got a spouse, then it went up another $1200 or $700 for the spouse to be there."

"My dad moved to Commonwealth Senior Living at Hampton. They were very attentive to him. He was difficult because he was confused. They were very patient. They were open to any ideas about getting medication and favorite foods and drinks that we could bring in or something that they could try that worked for him. Even all night when he would be up and my sister would just go in late, they were working with him and trying to get him comfortable and that kind of thing and keeping an eye on what he was eating and the behaviors he was exhibiting. We all felt like they were very thorough in their assessment of him at their house, and then their ongoing assessments of him while he was in their care. There were other people who had retired from the shipyard, and they tried to get him to engage with them. I liked that they had technical things for them to do, to play with locks and things. I would have liked to have seen a little more of that, but they did have a small area of that setup that I thought was nice. It was clean, but like in the courtyard, the gate going to the HVAC system or something looked like it was broken and just kind of wedged."

"I toured Harper's Station Yorktown. The people, the community itself, are very welcoming. I got a chance to eat there. They had a lot of choices, and the food was very good. The washer/dryer was good, a closet with doors. That's the only thing I was hesitant about, but good size. This facility is practically new. They have a pool and exercise equipment, and everything you need."

"The Muse At Town Center was nice, it was a little more expensive than the others I've seen. The people that we've met were very nice and very helpful. It was clean and the apartments were nice. It was a good community. They had activities, they also do trips to Wal-Mart and they would go out to eat every so often. They had a game room and they had exercise equipment."

"I am in Luther Manor. It is well known in the area. It is a great big building. They have overall 30 apartments in it. The rooms are fine. The dining room is very nice. You have two choices of food every day. The biggest thing is that this is what my husband and I need. I am disabled, and the apartment is handicap accessible. "

"Haygood Halls is at a tremendous location. It’s right across the street from the Methodist church, and quarter of a block from the local fire station and ambulance squad. It has a shopping center right across the street that’s a little closer to the other street. There are restaurants, stores and a grocery store. The facility is very attractive from the outside, and I liked what it offers as it pays for everything including your telephone, computer and your cable TV. Right now, that’s a huge savings for me. It has a trash pick-up right from the door, twice a week. They also deliver my meals, so I don’t have to go anywhere to get my meal. The maintenance department will put things up for you if you want them to. There are a lot of handles around the tub and the tub is very low, so it’s easy to step into. They also put handles on the front doors and I can push my walker in the foyer, grab the two handles at either side of the front door, and help myself in. The rooms are large with a washer and dryer hook-up, and have pretty adequate storage, I didn’t expect a lot, so I feel comfortable with what’s there. They have a clubhouse, and they have a couple of big activities a month, like pizza parties. You can also rent a space for your own personal use. They have put in a dog park on their property. They have a beautiful pool, and it’s in the center of the buildings that are build around it and that is very attractive. There is plenty of lounging around the pool. The people in the office that I have met are just as warm and friendly as they can be. I think that the quality of my life is going to be much improved because I’m going to have a lot of people to talk to and to be with, and it’s certainly going to be easier for me to live in a smaller area. I believe there is a fairly long counter and some cabinets above the counters, so I can always put things that I usually keep in my kitchen cabinets and in a closet that is off the laundry. I have a little patio at the back that I can go out to. I feel that everything seems more secure and the price is right. I’m really excited and when I finally was ready to make the decision, it was like somebody switched on a light. They were able to show me one of the apartments that I didn’t see last August when I went, and I was delighted to see what was in the apartments. They also have two poles for help; one is in the bathroom, and there’s another one for intruders. Iif you hear somebody messing with your door, you pull the other and that’s in the bedroom, I believe, and that was a plus. "

"My tour with Lynnhaven Cove went very well. It appears to be very well taken care of. It was the cheapest of all of the places that I toured. There's a maximum income that you can earn to live there, but I just liked it very much. It has a garden where you can plant stuff in. The staff was very helpful and very nice. I've met two different people (one of them was the girl who helped me register). The process was very, very fast and seamless. I tried to apply at a couple of other places, and you had to gather together a lot of paperwork and tax returns and pay stubs and all that kind of stuff. So, it was kind of tedious. The facility was very clean. They have a rec room with a piano and all kinds of amenities."

"My dad moved in. It's fantastic, even with all the COVID stuff going on. They have virtual meetings and virtual socials. They have a lot of virtual events. The facility is very nice and I liked it."

"I decided to go to Silver Hill at Great Neck. The rent seems reasonable. They said they're renovating every apartment and mine is one of them that they're in the process of renovating, and it looks and nice. The manager was awesome. She was very professional but extremely nice. I couldn't say anything negative. There's a refrigerator, a microwave, and a stove oven. There's a nice-sized closet. I'm hoping that will be enough to get everything in there. It seemed like a good choice. Also, there are two sets of washers and dryers on each floor, which I thought was pretty cool. The manager was great. She was very kind. I felt very comfortable even though I was nervous. But it was a good experience. It seemed very clean."
