"Harmony at Oakbrooke is a nice facility with lots of resources, activities, and services offered at the establishment. The facility is in good physical condition. It's a newer building. The staff was really nice. The rooms were cozy. They have an activity room."

"I liked Harmony at Harbour View for my mother. It was enlightening - that would be the word I would use. I didn't expect to see what I saw. It was so clean. It had three levels - the assisted living, independent living, and Alzheimer's part. I loved the movie theater and I loved the library. Everything was just conducive to what she would need. I really liked the staff. I liked the way they do the events and the calendars that they had on their doors. I liked the way that they had Christmas decorations. It was just so amazing. The rooms were nice. I loved the big the shower, and how you can walk in. It was handicap-accessible, and the room was big enough for what she needs. They have different rooms to offer at different prices. The lady that toured me around was excellent."

"My brother-in-law lived in the independent living part of First Colonial Inn for a couple of months before he went downhill. He has dementia, and he transferred to the assisted living part. They had a new assisted living apartment. It was delightful, and I would have loved to live there myself. They take good care of the people, and they’ve got good facilities. They’ve got a bus, they take people on excursions, shopping trips, and they take them to museums and doctor’s appointments. The staff is very nice and cordial. They’ve got a nurse on staff who evaluates the people and sees what they need, but they weren’t really equipped to handle my brother-in-law. "

"Harper's Station Yorktown is very nice. They were very new, and they had everything that I would ever want. The staff was very nice. They had all the amenities that I like. I like the pool, and I like the yard. They have the memory section, and I like that. I like that they have an outdoor space there. The rooms were very nice. They were larger than I expected."

"I used to live at Cromwell House Apartments, and I enjoyed living there. They were working with me at the time I was on disability, so it was good. The people who worked there were very kind and helpful. The environment they have changed and renovated it, and it is updated -- beautiful building, beautiful lobby -- but I have not seen the apartments. The only holdback with me with the apartments was you have to go through your bedroom to get to the bathroom. They have an activity coordinator, and she does onsite and also offsite activities where they have a van and a bus that you can use to go for shopping or to your doctors' appointments, which was very nice because everybody there doesn't drive. You have your own kitchen, so you cook your own meals unless we had a party or something like that, then we all gather, and we will bring in the dishes. "

"Harbor's Edge is the assisted living facility where one of my aunts is now residing. Aunt Ella has always regarded her "˜personal independence' as being of utmost importance and it took us a little time to discover a senior community where she would truly be happy and content. The one thing she feared most was the possibility of being treated like a child or having someone hover about-watching her every move. What she wanted was a place where she could experience a full life with as much independence as possible. The staff at Harbor's Edge was very helpful from the very first visit and the director eased her worries by taking all of us on a tour of the facilities; introducing us to some of the other residents and explaining that our aunt's freedom to live her own life would be supported and encouraged. She was thrilled to discover she would have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities from poker to scuba diving. If someone wants to try something that is new or different this staff goes out of their way to help make it happen, if at all possible. Today she remains as happy about her living arrangement as she was the day that she first moved there. She regularly travels to downtown Norfolk to eat at a favorite restaurant, attend the opera or simply enjoy a shopping trip. When she needs help with transportation, medications or other daily tasks she knows that all she has to do is request those services from an available member of the staff. She can enjoy a waterfront view just by looking out of the window or walking along the property of Harbor's Edge. There is even a swimming pool that contains buoyant salt water which is ideal for seniors and others who may have arthritic joints. We know that our aunt is extremely pleased with this particular amenity and you can generally find her relaxing in (or by) the pool on many occasions. This facility has given our aunt a new lease on life during her golden years. "

"I visited Jamestown Commons. They have two days a week of socials, and they have a bus to take you around. Everything is strictly independent there. They have a courtyard, an exercise room, and a game room. "

"I very much like 900 Acqua. It has a lot of amenities, like a swimming pool, and lots of activities that go on during the day through the evenings that I can participate in. You have to have a special key to be able to get in, so the safety factor is a big plus for me. I'm on the third floor, so it has elevators, of course. I'mvery pleased with where I moved. The staff is very efficient and friendly, and I feel very comfortable calling and asking questions if I need to. The people are very friendly, and the activities are a wide variety. The pricing is also a big factor for my selection. They don't provide food and there's no dining area, but I have a kitchen and I fix my own food which I enjoy. The facilities are very attractive with large hallways. It's decorated very nicely, and very clean. I have a small deck that I go sit out which I use during the summer."

"Haygood Halls is at a tremendous location. It’s right across the street from the Methodist church, and quarter of a block from the local fire station and ambulance squad. It has a shopping center right across the street that’s a little closer to the other street. There are restaurants, stores and a grocery store. The facility is very attractive from the outside, and I liked what it offers as it pays for everything including your telephone, computer and your cable TV. Right now, that’s a huge savings for me. It has a trash pick-up right from the door, twice a week. They also deliver my meals, so I don’t have to go anywhere to get my meal. The maintenance department will put things up for you if you want them to. There are a lot of handles around the tub and the tub is very low, so it’s easy to step into. They also put handles on the front doors and I can push my walker in the foyer, grab the two handles at either side of the front door, and help myself in. The rooms are large with a washer and dryer hook-up, and have pretty adequate storage, I didn’t expect a lot, so I feel comfortable with what’s there. They have a clubhouse, and they have a couple of big activities a month, like pizza parties. You can also rent a space for your own personal use. They have put in a dog park on their property. They have a beautiful pool, and it’s in the center of the buildings that are build around it and that is very attractive. There is plenty of lounging around the pool. The people in the office that I have met are just as warm and friendly as they can be. I think that the quality of my life is going to be much improved because I’m going to have a lot of people to talk to and to be with, and it’s certainly going to be easier for me to live in a smaller area. I believe there is a fairly long counter and some cabinets above the counters, so I can always put things that I usually keep in my kitchen cabinets and in a closet that is off the laundry. I have a little patio at the back that I can go out to. I feel that everything seems more secure and the price is right. I’m really excited and when I finally was ready to make the decision, it was like somebody switched on a light. They were able to show me one of the apartments that I didn’t see last August when I went, and I was delighted to see what was in the apartments. They also have two poles for help; one is in the bathroom, and there’s another one for intruders. Iif you hear somebody messing with your door, you pull the other and that’s in the bedroom, I believe, and that was a plus. "

"My mother-in-law is at Greenbrier Senior Apartments. They have a pull cord in every room so if something should happen you just pull it to get help. She still can pretty much take care of herself. We have to do grocery shopping and doctor's appointments but she can still dress and cook for herself. The place is very clean, the staff is wonderful, everybody there is very nice. The leasing manager is super good and when we need something done, they do it right away. My mother-in-law was one of the first residents to move in, she's been there for a long time now, it's been over 13 or 14 years."

"I toured Karolwood Gardens Portsmouth. It was beautiful and nice, but it was a little over my budget. It was too expensive. The staff was very friendly and helpful. They showed me a one-bedroom apartment and all that. They prepared the meals and had an entertainment room for them to entertain and several other things that they do. They also have a beauty parlor and a barber shop to cut men's hair. They were established very well."
