"I toured Brier Pointe Retirement Community. The people were extremely friendly and very outgoing about their situations. I liked everything about the facility except that number one, it was too big. Number 2, the traffic is horrendous. The one-bedroom for me was claustrophobic, but the two-bedroom would have worked really well. The problem that I found is that everything has a price. They have a wonderful buffet, a salad bar, and then there's a fruit bar, and another room that has liquor and ice cream. They got it all covered. There's another little area with burgers and pizza, so you can eat any time of day or night. The food was good, and the staff was excellent. It was an excellent facility, and if it were in an area that had a lot less traffic and a lot fewer people, I would have been very happy there. But it is a large facility. I mean, it goes on forever. They have a wing here and a wing there. If I hadn't had a tour guide, I'm pretty sure I'd have been lost in the first 5 minutes."

"The people who toured us around Independence Village of Olde Raleigh Sky Active Living were very cordial, knowledgeable, and very friendly. Since our son would have needed to be close to the elevator, they showed us a room near the elevator that was vacant. It was a 1-bedroom apartment, and it was spacious and even had a kitchenette. We had food there, too, and the food was like home cooking. It was wonderful. They said you could have your food delivered to your room if you like, or visit the dining room with everyone else. I think they even had picnics and a lot of other things for their clients to do. They also showed us an area where they would do physical therapy. There are parts you could use for a gym, but they mostly do physical therapy and things like that. It was nice. We were really taken with this facility."

"I will be moving into Bartlett Reserve. It was nice and clean. Everybody was friendly, so I had a good feeling about the place. There wasn't anything about it that I didn't like. I liked the layout. I liked the people. They fed us. I didn't eat at the time, but my son said the food was good. It was more an apartment-style living. I'm fully satisfied with it. I saw a gym, a salon, and a pool. They have several different activity rooms, conference rooms, and a room for you to have friends over for tea or parties, just anything you want."

"I toured Capital Oaks. I love the building. I like the way everything is built up top, the space you've got in the hallways, and all the apartments. I just saw one-bedroom apartments, but they are all furnished the same way, and the same thing in the smaller and larger ones. They've got garage storage that you can rent for your cars if you want it. So, that's the only one that I've seen that had that. It's very nice. The exercise area was very nice. I liked all the stuff there. They showed me the menus of what they have for the three meals. It looked very nice. I didn't meet any of the staff other than two, but they were very great."

"What I like about The Cambridge at Brier Creek is the wide-open spaces, the hallways that are very wide and easy to walk on, and the whole ambiance. It's not a very old place. We are both in our 80s, and it is something that we could visualize living in. Some of the places that we looked at we didn't find appealing at all because of the different scenarios that they had. The person who helped us was excellent. Katie was upbeat, very personable, very outgoing, and very professional. She is all-around a great person to deal with. We did have food, but it all looked really, really good. They have several dining area choices and a snack bar. They offer coffee 24 hours a day in the lobby. The food looks good. They have a lot of game rooms, they have puzzles, they have card clubs, and bingo. There is a huge gym and a swimming pool. You could do laps there. They have a pool if you want to do water aerobics, and then they have a hot tub that you can utilize. They offer everything as far as entertainment and physical fitness. They have transportation to your doctor's appointments and to different shopping sprees. They go out for lunch and dinner. You can book reservations with that, so that was another thing that was great about it. We looked at six facilities, and this is the one we like the best. The staff was excellent. We met quite a few already, and they were all really friendly and willing to help in any way they could."

"The staff at Abbotswood at Stonehenge seemed like they care. The ones that I talked to seemed to have a passion for caring for their people. They had long-term employees and they recognized them with pictures on the walls and stuff. It was clean and it looked like they had some good activities."

"Whispering Pines Gracious Retirement Living was nice. Everything is included in one price. The food's very nice. The staff was also very nice. They gave me a proper tour and I enjoyed it. They had one bedroom, two bedrooms, and studios. They had quite a number of activities and of course, they all had gyms. They take some trips if you want to go to close facilities like grocery stores."

"We visited Brookdale North Raleigh. We loved the cleanliness, the caring staff, the amenities, the food, and the menus. We loved everything about it. If Mom wants to go down and have a beer, there's a little bar there. There's also a room where people can go in and get together and do crafts. There's a separate dining room if you have family come in for a family dinner, one that would seat probably 14 people. The dining facilities look amazing. The food smelled and looked delicious. We loved the weekly menus that they have and the choices, and that's great. The facility was absolutely wonderful, and they had been struck by lightning the night before. The building wasn't damaged, but they had to have the air conditioning fixed, and they had mobile air flow units to make sure the air was clean."

"I like the independent living community of Holiday Durham Regent. They have cottages, and I like that part very much. If I hadn't been looking for a facility with continuous care for us, I would have taken that one. They have a very good gym and library. They have very clean and wide corridors. It's a good place. The person who gave us the tour was also very nice. The apartment they showed us was very spacious and had a good bathroom. The only thing is that they have a tub in it, and I don't know if it will be good for seniors, especially if you have a problem lifting your leg to get in there. These are the older type of shower tubs, too, so I find that a little unusual. Every floor has either a library or a gym where people can sit around. The outside is very good for walking as well, and it's a very quiet place, so we like that. The staff that we saw were very friendly people, and we liked that."

"The Lodge at Wake Forest only had apartments on the third floor at that time, and I was looking for the first floor. The staff, the cleanliness, and the structure were excellent. The rooms were fine."

"I toured Searstone, and I have a friend who moved in. I realized it's an expensive place. You must be in the middle range of revenue to do something like this. You have to have quality for general living before they let you in. They do not allow you to come in if you need level-one health care. You have to be reasonably healthy. They have three restaurants in there now, and they're remodeling the old place, so there will be two more restaurants, for a total of five restaurants inside the facility, so you'll get a variety of foods and everything. The formal restaurant is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and the general restaurants are usually open in the morning, noon, and night. They gave us a complimentary meal. All meals were covered, and the rooms were cleaned every two weeks. There were also all kinds of exercise centers scattered all over the place. They have internal buses and transportation that take them to the doctors or over to go shopping. Some things were scheduled and some were more flexible than they could accommodate. I met a couple of fully knowledgeable desk people. They answered almost every question by being as accommodating as they could be and, to some degree, anticipated what you might want to discuss."
