Her room has a bed, a chair, a dresser, and a table, which is enough for one person. The food seems OK. I've only eaten there once, and I got no complaints from my mother. She has been here for about three weeks now. They have bingo, and they take them to places every now and then. "

"My father has moved into American House Holland. What made us choose this place is the location, the friendliness of the staff, and the knowledge and condition of everybody in the building as well as the building itself. It's very clean. My father has a 350-square-foot studio apartment. It's very nice and open. He has large windows for plenty of outside viewing. And it's conveniently located close to where he eats, so he doesn't have to walk very far."

"When I toured the facility I was surprised at how really nice everything was. From the common areas to the spacious rooms, to the lovely dining room, the salon and “happy hour”. There is an upbeat atmosphere and the food was very good. This is a place I could picture going to myself if the occasion ever arises! The staff was also very kind and accommodating!"

"We visited the Baldwin House Lloyd's Bayou. It was very clean. They were very professional. The biggest negative is, I think it's three or four stories tall and my father would not like that. The rooms were very clean. The lady was very good at showing us the place and different rooms, a game room, and the dining room and stuff like that. However, she never called us back to see how things were going. But she was very professional, very friendly, and knew a lot of the residents. It was very well maintained, and there was no odor."

"The tour at American House Spring Lake went nice. The lady, Erica, was really nice. I told her that I'm having surgery on the 24th of February, and I should be ready to go this spring if something comes up. I want the first floor, if that's possible. She's going to keep me in mind for that. I saw the independent living, and it was nice. Except for the price, it would be everything I would want as long as I'm on the first floor. It'll be much more beautiful in the summer when everything's blooming and green. The inside was clean and well-kept. The room I saw downstairs was a little bigger than the other petite bedroom. It's a little bigger, and it's just slightly higher than what she quoted me. It was nice and had everything I would need. The lady that toured me was really nice and really thorough. I saw some of the menus, and it looked pretty good. The dining room was very pleasant and clean. The room where they do the activities was also nice."

"My parents liked it because of the way things are structured, and how things are done there. If they get to a point where their money runs out, they're not booted out the door. The staff was amazing, and we spent four and a half hours touring the place. They have a pool, hot tub, workout center, they have games, and they take trips. I was very impressed, the rooms were beautiful, well-maintained, and with no smell at all."

"The Cottages at Allen Springs offer a cottage instead of an apartment, and it has a garage. It is all on one level, which is important. They also offer many activities, and the rental cost includes all utilities, even the Internet. The woman who assisted me was knowledgeable and friendly. It was immaculately clean, very appealing visually, and very nicely decorated. The atmosphere was calm and interesting. The cottage was very, very spacious."

"Waterford Place was absolutely gorgeous. It’s brand-new, has a pool, has a lot of exercise facilities, and wonderful food menu. We were invited to eat there. We ate cake, and other stuff; but it was very expensive. It doubled everything else. It was like $8,000 a month. I don’t know anyone who could afford it. For someone who could afford it; that would be like a five-star. It’s like staying at a resort. We just did a tour with the staff. It was more of an organized tour, a group tour because it was a grand opening. I liked a lot of it. The only thing was some of the rooms, in a way I guess, were kind of very hospital-like. I think that was probably the assisted-living that was more hospital-like. It’s a nice area, and surrounded by three streets. To me it’s seems more like a really nice hotel. The people seemed to be friendly, the people that live there were younger, and weren’t unhealthy. They had verandas that you could sit in. "

"Have you had positive experiences at Covenant Village of the Great Lakes? – Yes! I have had positive comments on the writing of two books. The last one, I co-authored with my son, Rocky Nichols: Memories Are Life’s Highway and Souvenirs, Stories and Perspective. Comment from residents, family, and many more who have read the books have been very gratifying. The last couple of months have been filled with several concerts and Christmas programs. They were part of our “Life Connections,” a monthly list of activities for us to enjoy. We then can write about our adventures in our “Life Stories” group for others to enjoy. "I actually moved into Pine Oak Senior Community. It’s for senior citizens 62 and over. I have been here only a week, but the people at the front desk are really nice and helpful. There are all 1-bedrooms in this complex, but they do things like they get the garbage. I liked it. The rooms were a little bigger. The apartments are really nice. They’re clean, and they put a new carpet down so I was happy with them when I walked in here. Each place has a balcony. They have nice landscaping around. The neighborhood is pretty decent, and there is a grocery store just a block away at the most. They’ll bring your groceries over if you need it. There’s a bank at the corner down the street and they’ll come here once a week and help you do your banking stuff. It’s almost like assisted-living. The rent was fine price-wise. Everybody else had a waiting list. They just had openings, and it works out OK for me because my son lives about half a mile from here. "

"We went to the Covenant Village Of The Great Lakes. It's a beautiful place with tons of amenities, but it's expensive. We had two friends that went there, and we've been there about four times in the last six months. Their apartments are on the small side, but they have different levels of sizes and prices. You go from two bedrooms and two baths with an x amount to one with two bedrooms and one bath, and they had a series of different floor plans. They're an average size. They have more storage in the rooms. There are more shelves and closets and most of the views are either woods or front lawn. Some people want one right in front cause they say they like to watch people come and go in cars, which a lot of old people like. Some of them have two bathrooms for one person might want to sit in a tub while the other person in a couple wants to stand up and hold on to a bar for support and doesn't want to climb over a tub. So it's like a super choice, " I can sit in that tub and my wife could stand up." And they had two small bathrooms with two different tubs. Their little kitchen spaces are a little more accessorized but they charge a lot of money. We ate there three times, it was good, and of restaurant quality. They had another room they called fine dining, and that was a waiter at a round table for six. You can move the chairs around, and make it for four. They have top-line menus, like a nice steak, just like in a high-end restaurant. Then whatever you get they take out of your food allowance anyway, because you pay $360 a month for food. But everything that you do there has a charge for it. And if you have laundry or room service, there's a charge. I think the only thing free is the bus rides. We liked it but the biggest problem with that isn't the rent. The rent is about the same as any place except for the extra charges. It's the community fee that is stifling to me. Our community fee, me and my wife for what we would rent, and everything like that was $283,000. That would be the sacrifice of the capital in your home. They say, "We call that a benevolent fund. If you pay that, it's like an insurance policy that if you run out of money we can't displace you." The irony with that is you do a financial workup with them like they would do if you're buying a house. So, they already know what your financial status is. Why would you be paying nearly $300,000 fee for insurance? It's a big block for us. They have a gym, a PT specialist, and a library."
