"I liked the openness of the areas at Ivy Park at Otay Ranch. The staff was very friendly and informative. The place was very big. It had a modern look to it, and it looked very new. It was very clean. They had a little bar area for coffee, and it seemed like they had a lot of amenities there."

"I've had a lot of experience here. My godmother was there. She was independent, but if you're medical status changed, you pay a little extra. She went from independent to assisted because she had to have help after her. She was a resident for about two years. When you drive through, there's not a lot of parking, but there's a lot of street parking. On weekends, you could park at the hospital across the street in their parking lot. It's a gated community. It has a grass area with a playground for the kids, a dog park, and an area where they celebrate, like Veteran's Day. They have barbecues out there and music. When you go inside, it has marble and nice rich wood. They have a formal dining room, so if the family wants to use it, they can have their food or have their food catered. There are elevators. You can either have a one-bedroom or a studio. The living area has a kitchen with a small top two-burner stove, lots of cabinets, and a large closet as you come into the door. The bathroom is large and is located in the bedroom if you have the one-bedroom and there are two closets in the bedroom, which was nice. The shower area is large, where you can roll a wheelchair and scoot over into your shower chair. You have to provide your own internet. There's a large park across the street if you want to take your parent or your loved one out and stroll through the park. Their dining room is nice. They also have a bar with TVs. It's like Buffalo Wild Wings where you have the TVs on the wall showing the different games, and they have a bar where the residents can have a wheelchair roll up to the bar or residents can sit in the bar stools and you can get beer and wine. They have a meal plan where you either have breakfast, lunch, and dinner or you can reduce your cost by just choosing one or two meals. They have a gym with a physical therapist onsite at all times. They have a swimming pool and a therapy pool. The staff is really nice. The doors close at 11:00, and you ring the doorbell. I believe there's staff there 24/7 or you have a scan, so you can get back in. It's easy to get around. It had very nice wide hallways. They have exercise every morning where you just come right out your door and everyone in that hallway who wants to participate just does hallway exercise. Each floor has a full-sized kitchen and a large area for families to have their own little cookouts and meals together."

"Fredericka Manor was good, but it was just too far and too distant from me. It has a lovely setting, and the rooms were nice. "

"I visited the independent living community of Pacific Pointe Retirement in Chula Vista. Everything was good, but they don't have any way to let them know I'm falling. Something to call or a little button I have to press, so they could come and pick me up. They don't have that. I was really happy with it, but unfortunately, it didn't work for me. The gentleman there is great, though. He's really caring and very good. There was a lot of remodeling going on, but I was very pleased with the room I saw."

"Lantern Crest is a newer place. My mom has her own room. There are excellent, cordial people. It’s a very nice place. They do activities for a whole month and have them laid out. The food is excellent. They provide excellent services and have manicurists and hair stylists. "

"I have been a resident of St. Paul's Manor for 6 years. Everything here meets my needs. There are many activities offered. The staff and administration are caring and helpful. The residents are friendly and become a family. The food is good and many varieties are offered. Located on Bankers Hill, the area is beautiful and safe for walking. Nearby Balboa Park offers museums and the zoo. City bus service is very convenient. Banks and restaurants are within walking distance. My one bedroom apartment views the ocean and is spacious. All this for a rent rate that is lower than any comparable facility. I highly recommend this for senior living. "

"Belmont Village La Jolla was a beautiful facility and the food was great. All of the amenities were great. It was just that the square footage was way too small for what we would be paying. There was some ability to do art or something like that. They also had physical fitness activities. The facility was new, well thought out, and planned. The staff who gave us the tour was very helpful and very knowledgeable about their facility. All in all, a top level of service. They would provide meals 3 times a day. We had lunch there and the food tasted great, with lots of variety."

"I toured Belmont Village Sabre Springs. I'm so pleased with what I saw and with the particular levels of memory care, since they have different levels in their program. I have a nurse coming in from Belmont to do a half-hour assessment with my dad to see if he would qualify for that program. The tour was very good and very thorough. They listened to what kind of care my dad is getting where he's at. They have a Circle of Friends program for memory care. They are the only community I know that has it; it puts memory care in the same environment as the independent living and assisted living levels. They have their own separate day programs where they end up working more on cognitive sales and such. So they don't just work on activities that anybody can do; some of the activities there are very focused on the dementia. They're also able to eat in the dining room with everybody from the independent living and assisted living communities. They also have happy hours and concerts. It's a much freer facility; they can go anywhere in their secure neighborhood area. We're hoping he'll qualify for the Circle of Friends so he could be among people who don't necessarily have dementia. The staff was great, and they seemed to be very nice. We met with them for over an hour for the tour, they were very courteous, and they go above and beyond. They also sent us home with cookies, and they were good."

"Everyone is really kind and caring. Staff is always willing to help if needed. Housekeeping keeps the building very clean. It's just like home when here. "

"We chose Chateau La Jolla, and everything we've encountered so far has been great. The staff was polite and courteous, and seems to meet my father's needs. He will be in independent living and we like that he doesn't have to move to another unit or another building, and he could have a nurse or even hospice come in if he needs it. And that's one of the selling point that made us decide on it. They have a world-class chef that caters to the clients' needs as far as any food, dietary restrictions, and things like that. Also, if you have a favorite food, they're very flexible, and open in trying to meet what you or your family members want. It's a smaller and more intimate community. They have a happy hour on Thursday nights and a champagne brunch on Sundays. They have this little red button in the different rooms that you can push if you fall. You think they'd make it a big red honking thing so you wouldn't miss it, especially for elderly clients. But it's small and if you fall and can't get over to it, so that's a little concerning."

"My dad was at The Gateway, which is independent living. He really liked that place, but he couldn't stay there because of his memory. I liked everything about it. It was great. I liked the people. The staff was friendly. The accommodations were very nice and kept up nicely. They had a weight room. They had a lot of like barbecues and fun activities. He was able to walk everywhere to stores and stuff; he really liked that. It's right next to the hospital."
