What to Consider About Assisted Living in Dallas

Dallas, located in north-central Oregon in the Willamette Valley about 50 miles south of Portland, was named after Vice President George Mifflin Dallas in 1852 in answer to a petition put forward by area residents. Today, the city is home to 14,583 people, 18.8 percent of whom are seniors, and boasts several beautiful parks, an Aquatic Center and a drive-in theater. Seniors who need help with the aspects of daily living can find support in one of the three assisted living facilities within the city proper or in one of the 12 facilities located in the nearby communities of Salem, Sheridan, Independence and Monmouth.

In all of Oregon, including Dallas, assisted living facilities are also called residential care facilities depending upon whether they have private or shared rooms. Both facility types are regulated by the Licensing and Regulatory Oversight division of the Oregon Department of Human Services.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Dallas

    • The Dallas area is home to world-class medical facilities, including Salem Health West Valley, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
    • Seniors’ families can rest assured that their loved one is likely to be safe in Dallas. The city has a violent crime rate of 16.3 and a property crime rate of 34, both lower than the national averages of 22.7 and 35.4, respectively.
    • The overall cost of living in Dallas is 113.5, lower than both the Oregon average of 124.4 and the U.S. average of 100. Although healthcare costs are lower than the average at 83, seniors can expect to pay higher-than-average prices for housing, groceries and transportation, which could impact facility costs for area seniors.
    • Social Security income is not taxed in Oregon, which could leave more money in Dallas seniors’ monthly budgets.
    • Seniors with breathing difficulties may find that they breathe easier in Dallas than in other areas of the U.S. or Oregon. The city has an air quality of 68 out of 100 on a scale where higher numbers indicate better air quality, higher than the U.S. average of 58.
    • Dallas temperatures are warm in the summer, with highs of 82 degrees, and lower in the winter, with lows of 35. While the city gets 54 inches of rain annually, almost 20 more than the national average of 38, it only sees 6 inches of snow annually, 22 inches more than the national average of 28 inches. This could be a concern for seniors who have trouble getting around outdoors.
