Seniors who need assistance with daily living activities may reside in a local assisted living facility. The Dallas area has 14 facilities, including three within the city. Both types of facilities are governed by the Oregon Department of Human Services, Office of Licensing and Regulatory Oversight.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Dallas

  • Oregon does not tax Social Security income. Pension income is partially taxed, and withdrawals from retirement accounts are fully taxed. However, the state has no sales tax, which may offset the income tax rate for seniors in Dallas.
  • While Dallas's overall cost of living is about 14% higher than the U.S. average, it is about 10% lower than the state average. Groceries, housing, healthcare, utilities and transportation all cost less here than in the average Oregon community, which may make it a good option for budget-minded seniors.
  • The combined property and violent crime rate in Dallas is low relative to the national rate, and most of the crime that occurs is property-related. Seniors who enjoy being active in their community may have peace of mind seeking assisted living in Dallas.
  • Dallas is a relatively comfortable city year-round, ranking 76 out of 100 on Sperling's Comfort Index versus the national average of 54. The coolest month of the year is December when temperatures range between 34-46 degrees, and the warmest month of the year is August when temperatures are between 52-83 degrees. This city's weather may appeal to seniors who enjoy outdoor activities.
  • The Dallas area is home to world-class medical facilities, including Salem Health West Valley Hospital, in the event of medical emergencies or illness.
  • The air quality in Dallas is relatively poor. According to the American Lung Association, the Portland-Vancouver-Salem metropolitan area, where Dallas is located, ranks 52 out of 228 metropolitan areas for high ozone days and 23 out of 217 metropolitan areas for 24-hour particle pollution. This may affect seniors with conditions like heart disease or COPD.
