My mother is in the assisted living community of Heron Pointe Senior Living in Monmouth. We chose it for her because it was near her residence, and she has some friends there from the church. They gave her a beeper that goes around her neck. She presses it, and somebody shows up to help her, like with the bathroom and her showers. They bring her her meals and try to encourage her to eat out in the dining area with other people. They're trying to encourage her to interact with other people within the community. It's a big move for her. She was on her own for eight years after my father died, so she's not used to interacting with other people so much, and they're trying to encourage that. They have services where she can get her nails trimmed and her hair done. They regulate her medications and bring her her pills at the appropriate times throughout the day. They'll take her outside if she wants to go outside. They have group activities such as potting plants, painting, doing puzzles, and others. She hasn't taken any part in any group activities, but they're trying to encourage her to do that. For the food, my mother says the cooks are young, and they're cooking their type of food. She grew up with a lot of meat, potatoes, gravy, farm food, and their food is a lot of pasta and other things that she's not quite used to. Other than that, overall, I think they're doing a very nice job.

We toured Heron Pointe Senior Living. We liked everything about it, except that we couldn't afford it right away. They had a two-bedroom, two-bathroom ready for us to move into, but we couldn't swing the payment right then, and I did not want to go into one because it was for both of us. The facility was very nice and clean. We were going to get a cottage that was outside, and we liked it. It was in a small town, and we're used to small towns, so we liked that part too. The person who assisted us has called us once a year since we went in there to see if we were ready to go in or if they could help us.

I just moved here to Heron Pointe. I like the little cottage that I am in. I got my own kitchen, two bedrooms, a fridge, dishwasher, microwave, and everything. You can get three meals a day and house cleaning twice a week. Everything you want is here. We do barbecues, bingos, and quite a few activities. The food is good. The staff are good people. They do what they need to do.
