The rooms are small and dark, the staff doesn’t respond timely to the call buttons. If they respond at all to the buttons. They refuse to take you to the bathroom, sometimes up till three hours or more. The food was horrible and inadequate, and if you stay in your room, they tell you your foods cold too bad when they finally bring it, meds were distributed late, and patients waited long periods of time for assistance. When issues are raised, and you call about them. Your family member ends up getting yelled at for involving too many people in their care. Even though I’m the only family member calling. My sister and her husband are there and if his sister and I contact them all they get is grief. Time limits put on for when you can ring the buzzer constantly getting calls from my sister regarding the messes in her bed, because of lack of assistance. Trying to decide whether to get a lawyer or go to the news.

We went to The Oaks at Woodfield. They weren’t able to give a full tour due to COVID, but I kind of walked the grounds. It’s really clean, and my mom really looked comfortable. She was there for about 10 to 12 days for respite. They had window visits, and they put numbers on the window for you to know where your resident was located. The room was really clean. I saw nothing out of place, the slightest thing on the floor, or anything. I didn’t have any unpleasant interaction with the staff. The courtyards looked nice. They had phones in the room, so when you go to do the window visit, if that person can do the phone, they have you call inside and hand that person the phone. I don’t know if every room has this, but she had the biggest La-Z-Boy where they were putting her in. Communication was good. They sent a newsletter daily, letting you know what was going on there.

My mother will be moving into Bella Vita Senior Living – Grand Blanc. It’s a nice facility. The people were really great, and they got on-staff help. There weren’t a lot of people. There were like only 30 people in the whole facility. They had visiting spaces, a nice dining area, suites, an indoor movie theater, and a chapel. The other half was memory, which was totally separate from assisted. They have 24-hour care and an RN on-staff the whole time. They pretty much got the whole nine yards plus some. Her room is 800 square feet, and it’s nice with tall ceilings. Basically, they have three different sizes, and they are all on the big side. They got a suite with a bedroom off to the side, a suite with a bedroom and a sitting room and a smaller suite. They can move their own furniture in and things like that, which I thought was important. The owner was really nice. They did really well. It’s a nice facility, and it’s all on one floor.

My mom is at Charter Senior Living of Davison. The staff is very caring and very informative. There’s lots of communication about my mom. They treat her as an individual. They have access to a hair salon twice a week, a doctor on staff that comes and sees them in their homes, outings, a library, a theater room, and different activities and classes every day that they can participate.
They’re all in their individual apartments so they have some sense of independence. My mom is currently in a studio, but she’s on a waitlist for a one-bedroom. It is a decent size studio apartment. She has a small kitchenette that has a microwave and a mini fridge so she can keep her own snacks. She has her own private bathroom, too.
They have outdoor areas that they can go in and are still contained on the property. They have two separate living room areas and a sunroom. It’s not a huge facility, so it’s easy to navigate and everything’s handicap accessible. It’s a little pricier than some of the ones in the area, but the extra price is worth it.

I had my mom at The Pines of Goodrich for about four months. It’s good for anybody looking for a place for their parents or relatives. They treated us well there. She had a private room there and she was never able to go out, but they have a dining room and then a porch outside. We could take her out there. She never really felt good enough to enjoy the rest of the people, but they were good to her there.
They had one building that was just for people that kind of needed help or maybe just try to get a little stronger to go home. The other building had memory care for people that might be suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s. They were very helpful, and we had hospice come in and help because mom just wasn’t able to get stronger.
They were good to us and her. The rooms were nice. They had just gotten new carpeting when we moved her in there. They were very clean and they always took care of her. They had a living room where they had a big TV if you wanted to go out and watch. They had people doing puzzles. They were clean and they always made good food for her. She would push the button for help and they would be right in there to help her with whatever she needed.
Everybody that was in there was wonderful. They always kept my mom’s room clean and her clean. Everything was always nice. The staff was always very nice. They would come in and talk to us and let us know how she was doing or if we had any questions, they were always willing to talk to us. Compared to all the other pricing, they were probably right there because she needed probably the most care that anybody could have. They were always there to help her. There was never any time when they just ignored her or didn’t help her with her needs.

The Pines of Burton was small which we liked because it would be less confusing for someone who has memory problems. We’re impressed with the staff, who seem to be very kind and accommodating. The cook is very accommodating and if they want something that’s not on the menu, they usually get it. My mom is impressed with the food. I liked that they have an aviary inside which was very good, and my mom really likes the birds, which is good for her. It seems like the people who work there really care about the residents, which is the most important thing to us. My mom gets the care that she needs and I believe that they’re delivering that. The staff could use a little bit of training on helping with transferring people from bed to the chair to the toilet in order to make it more comfortable for the people being transferred. Based on the amount of care that my mom needed, their price seemed reasonable.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Grand Blanc
The Adult Foster Care and Homes for the Aged Licensing Division of Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs handles licensing and regulation. Although Michigan doesn’t license assisted living facilities, a Home for the Aged license might be required if the facility has 21 or more residents aged 55 or older who receive room, board and supervised personal care.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Grand Blanc
- State sales tax in Michigan is 6%, but there aren’t any city, local or county sales taxes. Groceries and prescription drugs, which are often two hefty expenses for seniors, are exempt from sales tax.
- State income taxes are charged at a flat rate of 4.25%. While Michigan cities can charge additional taxes, Grand Blanc doesn’t do so. Seniors don’t pay income taxes on Social Security or Railroad Retirement benefits or military pensions, though other retirement benefits may be taxed. Seniors born before 1946 enjoy tax exemptions on up to $11,983 of income from private retirement plans, or $23,966 for joint filers. Those born between 1946 and 1952 can only claim an exemption on up to $20,000, or $40,000 for joint filers, and seniors born after 1952 usually don’t receive any exemptions.
- The overall cost of living in Grand Blanc is more than 7% less than the national average. Groceries are nearly 5% lower, and health care costs are 15% lower in Grand Blanc. Housing costs are also more than 22% less than the national average, which could factor into the lower cost of assisted living residences.
