The 10 Best Assisted Living Facilities in Holly, MI for 2023
Approximately 55 miles northwest of Detroit, Holly is a small community that’s home to almost 1,000 seniors aged 65 and over, representing 15% of its total residents. The city is ideal for those who prefer natural, open spaces; residents can take a walk through the Seven Lakes State Park, and they can also visit the Holly Township Beach and the Sorensen Park. Retirees can also go fishing at the Rose Oaks County Park.
Holly’s older population is close to 23 assisted living facilities, where they have access to multiple health care services, including constant supervision, therapeutic treatments, recreational activities and assistance with daily tasks. Holly’s assisted living costs are not reported in the Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2020, so we’re using costs of its neighbor, Flint. Seniors in these two areas can expect to pay an average of $3,669 per month for assisted living. This rate is 14% lower than the statewide average of $4,200, or $531 less. The city is even more affordable than the U.S. median of $4,300 per month, being lower by 17% or $631.

I came and went as i wanted to see my mom. We would sit on the huge porch the ran across the front of the ranch style home. It sat back from the road and was on a big peace of property so was quiet and she could hear the birds before she became too deaf. She got thre homecooked meals a day and if she didnt like the they would cook her something else! She would get lound and mean sometimes as the demia took over, but they knew it was Mary under there just as I knew it was mu Mommy. They refuse to take you to the bathroom, sometimes up till three hours or more. The food was horrible and inadequate, and if you stay in your room, they tell you your foods cold too bad when they finally bring it, meds were distributed late, and patients waited long periods of time for assistance. When issues are raised, and you call about them. Your family member ends up getting yelled at for involving too many people in their care. Even though I’m the only family member calling. My sister and her husband are there and if his sister and I contact them all they get is grief. Time limits put on for when you can ring the buzzer constantly getting calls from my sister regarding the messes in her bed, because of lack of assistance. Trying to decide whether to get a lawyer or go to the news.

My grandmother started staying at Suncrest as an emergency respite client. She had fallen and the hospital released her, but she was not ready to go back home. She stayed at Suncrest for almost four weeks. The facility was clean, it did not smell like urine, and the staff was friendly. I liked that my grandma had a private suite with one other lady. They had their own bedrooms, dining area, television-watching space, and private sitting chairs near the window where they could watch the Huron River. The chair my grandmother used for TV watching was electronic so it was easy for her to be more self-reliant when getting up and down. She also wore a personalized pendant for contacting the staff when she needed anything. The best part of her staying there was when she pushed the button, someone came to help her within a few minutes. I wish she would have decided to stay at Suncrest. The owner was very responsive to our questions and everyone was so nice! The only drawback I noticed is the lack of organized activities for the residents. I would highly recommend this location.

My mother was placed at Symphony to rehab a broken leg (she is 80 years old). The day she got there the staff forced her to go to the bathroom in a bedpan (her leg is broke she could not lift herself to hit the pan and it was extremely painful for her to move.
She is also is on life or death medication. She asked for her meds and was told the Pharmacy was closed and they couldn’t help her. She had to call my dad and have him bring her meds to her.
She ended up taking the pills late (she has to take them on a schedule). Consequently, the next day she had a seizure while in PT. The PT trainer was not trained and called my brother instead of calling for help or calling for a doctor or staff or even 911.
Then, when it was time for her meds again they gave her the wrong medication which could have caused her to die. Again, the staff would not listen to her and forced her to take the wrong meds. Then they took all her meds and poured them out of the bottles and put them in a baggy.
This place is dangerous and should not be allowed to operate. We have moved my mother to another facility (she was at this place for 48 hours and all this happened).
Also, while arrangements were being made to move her the director told her she would not be treated any better anywhere else and all this happened because they were short staffed. Short staffed is not a reason to put anyone’s life in danger.
Please do not put your loved one here.

We went to The Oaks at Woodfield. They weren’t able to give a full tour due to COVID, but I kind of walked the grounds. It’s really clean, and my mom really looked comfortable. She was there for about 10 to 12 days for respite. They had window visits, and they put numbers on the window for you to know where your resident was located. The room was really clean. I saw nothing out of place, the slightest thing on the floor, or anything. I didn’t have any unpleasant interaction with the staff. The courtyards looked nice. They had phones in the room, so when you go to do the window visit, if that person can do the phone, they have you call inside and hand that person the phone. I don’t know if every room has this, but she had the biggest La-Z-Boy where they were putting her in. Communication was good. They sent a newsletter daily, letting you know what was going on there.

Financial Assistance for Assisted Living in Holly
Low-income seniors in Holly who live in homes for the aged can apply to receive financial assistance for assisted living through the Medicaid State Plan. Additionally, eligible Michigan residents have access to an optional state supplement to Supplemental Security Income, which may be applied towards the cost of their care.
While many families use their own funds or personal assets to pay for assisted living, there are plenty of additional options to cover these costs. Some additional ways to finance assisted living costs include:
Veterans Benefits
Life Insurance Policy
Long-Term Care Insurance
Reverse Mortgage
For more information about different ways to finance assisted living, visit our Assisted Living in Michigan page.
Michigan’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman provides assistance if seniors are experiencing any problems in their assisted living facilities. An investigation will be initiated once residents have filed a complaint on medical neglect, denial of services, food quality and alleged cases of psychological or physical abuse. The program can also inform older adults about their rights to prevent elder abuse, and assistance is also provided to facilitate admission into residential care centers.
This nonprofit organization serves older adults of all religious backgrounds in the Detroit metropolitan area, which includes Oakland County. Experienced geriatric care managers offer one-on-one consultations to help seniors determine their long-term options, and referrals may be provided to services such as medical advocacy, support groups and social wellness programs. Free classes are available on mindfulness, nutrition and exercise, and certain retirees may be eligible for transportation to essential appointments.
The Area Agency on Aging 1-B provides a range of supportive services to Oakland County’s older population. Counselors help seniors navigate local resources they might find helpful, such as transportation, legal advice and financial assistance. Additionally, residents have access to multiple learning programs on fall prevention and diabetes management. The agency also funds several senior centers, one of which is located in Holly and offers computer coaching, social events, fitness and other recreational activities.
The county’s VA Service Office can help veterans in Holly claim the federal and state benefits they are eligible for, which may partially contribute to the cost of care at assisted living facilities. Free transportation is also available to VA medical centers in the nearby cities of Detroit and Ann Arbor.
This program offers counseling services at no cost to help Medicare beneficiaries understand their health insurance plan. Volunteers can explain the enrollment process to seniors and their families, and assistance is provided to apply for supplemental plans and prescription drug coverage. Outreach may be available in person and over the phone.
Oakland County’s Transit Authority helps older adults and individuals with disabilities go to doctor’s appointments, pharmacies and adult centers in the area. Trips must be reserved at least one day in advance, and users with limited mobility can board and exit the program’s vehicles with their integrated wheelchair lift. A contribution is required to use the service, and personal care attendants can accompany the participant at no extra charge. Door-to-door rides may also be available to applicants who meet certain eligibility criteria.
Assisted Living Laws and Regulations in Holly
