"My grandmother moved to Ramsey Village. So far, they're very caring and considerate. They're meeting the needs that are needed even though they're short-staffed. She said that the food is very good, she gets homemade everything, so she has no complaints. They have bingo and crocheting, and they have a calendar with everything on it. Somebody comes in and does the toenails and the fingernails. They also have bingo twice a week but what they haven't done is go on outings, that's the only downfall so far. They don't have a whole therapy area at all, while the other places that we looked at had a therapy room. Right now she's not getting as much therapy as she wants, she's not getting the walking that she needs. They do laundry for her, they come in and clean the room, change the sheets, and they help with putting her hearing aids in. I haven't had any problems. The building itself is very clean and she likes the food. I think there could be more activities."

"We visited the independent living community of Edencrest at Tuscany in Altoona. The facility itself was great, and the apartment that we were looking at actually had a nice balcony, which would have been nice. For activities, they combined independent living with assisted living. They're a very beautiful place to go to, but just a little further away from all of our kids when I want to see them, so we decided to go somewhere else. They have a one-on-one exercise area and underground parking. They're also newer, and the staff members were always very lovely."

"I toured Edencrest at Pleasant Hill. It's new, and the administrator who took me on the tour seemed like she knew what she was doing and had things in mind to do as far as the future goes. She had some good ideas. The rooms were very nice and comparable to any other room I've seen. They're about the same size and have a nice, roomy bathroom. They just showed me a model. She told me that they just got a new chef and that he was good."

"We went to Edencrest, which I like the best. Everything was nice. The rooms were good, but it was my parents' opinion that they thought the rooms were too small. They have different kinds of games and a schedule of activities. They have exercise classes and monthly get-togethers where they find different outings to go on. We didn't taste the food, but they did offer. They were very nice, and everything was really good. "

"Everyone was very helpful and had smiles on their faces. I felt very comfortable. Everything was clean and the facility was beautiful. Very close to where my parents Dr offices are. Will be moving my parents in! "

"We went to Bickford of West Des Moines. It's a beautiful place, very secure. There were several common areas, and the dining room was very well kept. They weren't so far spaced apart, but they were at separate tables, maybe a group of four per table. And it was just really charming. They had an area that was for puzzles and reading. They had an area that you could participate in, like games and other social events."

"The staff genuinely cares for the residents. Daily, weekly & special activities keep the residents engaged in life and with each other. My parent’s apt. is spacious and they appreciate weekly housekeeping. Our family is grateful for our parent’s safety and well-being. Perks include location, cleanliness, healthy meals, heated garage, library, exercise room, theater, mail delivery, & a greeter at the front entrance. "

"We like MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan Creek. It was well-appointed and bright, and the atmosphere was good. The staff knew everyone that we met. They were getting ready for a bus ride. MorningStar at Jordan Creek is one of our favorites. There were more staff around. They do movie night, they were doing a popcorn thing when we were there, and it was friendly. The rooms were a good size and decent depending on how much money you wanted to spend, but for the smallest one, it was a decent size. The menu looked really good. The heavy menu is at noon and then they do it lighter menu at night for the memory care to try to get them settled down. The level of care seemed good. The nurses seemed to know their patients."

"My tour at Edencrest at The Legacy was very nice. Everything was pretty much included, like the laundry. They had a nice place to eat that's restaurant style and they'd come out to take your order. If you didn't like the special, you could order something else. They had their main area where did their exercises, it's set up like the main sitting area. They did trips, when we were visiting they just got back from taking a tour somewhere to look at the scenery. The room that I saw was a decent size, they have private rooms. They had a salon, it was a nice building. Everything seemed nice and kept up there."

"Holland Farms Senior Living was nice. It was almost brand-new. It was only there for two years or so. The staff members were all nice. They were great. The building overlooked a nice little park in the back with a big pond in the middle. It was good that you are not staring at buildings. They also had walking paths that pass the park. They provide transportation if they want to go to church or somewhere. They also had a library that was connected to the Norwalk Public Library. It looks like somebody from there would bring books in and stuff if you requested them, like once a week or once every couple of weeks. They had rooms to do activities, they had a puzzle room where they could do puzzles and stuff, and play cards if they wanted to. We saw a suite and a 1-bedroom, they were a decent size and they had full size in their rooms too. There's plenty of closet space in the suite, they could have a nice big closet."

"I was impressed with Bickford of Ames. It was very nice inside. It was decorated nicely with fall decorations, which I think is important for the residents. They made it look like a happy place. Darla was the one who gave me the tour, and she was very, very friendly and knowledgeable. She had been there for years and I enjoyed that. I knew some of the residents there, too, so it was nice to be able to stop and say hi to them. They also had a nice courtyard in the middle and a salon."

"I was able to tour Perry Lutheran Homes. It was a nice experience. I actually have a relative that lives there, and I had been there before to visit one-on-one. It was nice, but it just didn't have the overall warmth from the staff members. It had more of a facility look and feel to it. I had no complaints about the cleanliness when we were there. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I like that it is right in the middle of a residential neighborhood because it is important for the residents. Also, it's nice when they look out the window, and when they are able to go outside with a family or a staff member just to get some fresh air. It is important to have that in a community like that. It is beneficial for them. The building is well kept and groomed. I have no complaints about that either. It is on a high traffic street, but that's good for the residents, too, to see that the world is still going even though sometimes you don't feel a part of it."
