"Bickford of Urbandale was an older facility but still very nice. The staff was great, very pleasant and knowledgeable. When I was there, it was lunch time so I could not tell you their activities but I know they have quite a bit of activities. The dining area was very nice. They were doing some remodelling while I was there. "

"My grandmother moved to Ramsey Village. So far, they're very caring and considerate. They're meeting the needs that are needed even though they're short-staffed. She said that the food is very good, she gets homemade everything, so she has no complaints. They have bingo and crocheting, and they have a calendar with everything on it. Somebody comes in and does the toenails and the fingernails. They also have bingo twice a week but what they haven't done is go on outings, that's the only downfall so far. They don't have a whole therapy area at all, while the other places that we looked at had a therapy room. Right now she's not getting as much therapy as she wants, she's not getting the walking that she needs. They do laundry for her, they come in and clean the room, change the sheets, and they help with putting her hearing aids in. I haven't had any problems. The building itself is very clean and she likes the food. I think there could be more activities."

"We visited the independent living community of Edencrest at Tuscany in Altoona. The facility itself was great, and the apartment that we were looking at actually had a nice balcony, which would have been nice. For activities, they combined independent living with assisted living. They're a very beautiful place to go to, but just a little further away from all of our kids when I want to see them, so we decided to go somewhere else. They have a one-on-one exercise area and underground parking. They're also newer, and the staff members were always very lovely."

"My aunt was at the assisted living facility of Edencrest at Timberline in Urbandale. It has a lot of activities, which I was happy to see. We got to eat lunch with her there, and it had an area that you could walk around outside without having the doors locked because it was kind of in a circle. She liked that really well. One of the activities she did with them was planting some roses in their garden. She stayed there about three months, and the staff was really good. They always came in and reminded her of who they were and what function they had there. Their food was really nice, too. She was also able to sit at different tables that she wanted to. She liked not being assigned a place, but sitting down where she wanted to talk with people. She made a little circle of friends there."

"We went to Bickford of West Des Moines. It's a beautiful place, very secure. There were several common areas, and the dining room was very well kept. They weren't so far spaced apart, but they were at separate tables, maybe a group of four per table. And it was just really charming. They had an area that was for puzzles and reading. They had an area that you could participate in, like games and other social events."

"Independence Village of Waukee was a very nice facility. The staff seemed very nice as well. They have individual apartments, which were very nice. It was out of our price range though. My mother-in-law needs Medicaid right away, and it takes a couple of years before they're able to accept Medicaid. It's a big place, so I didn't see as much interaction with everyone, but they all seemed very friendly and nice. They had salon services and a library. They had many different amenities. They had snacks available. The dining area was almost set up like a restaurant."

"We like MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan Creek. It was well-appointed and bright, and the atmosphere was good. The staff knew everyone that we met. They were getting ready for a bus ride. MorningStar at Jordan Creek is one of our favorites. There were more staff around. They do movie night, they were doing a popcorn thing when we were there, and it was friendly. The rooms were a good size and decent depending on how much money you wanted to spend, but for the smallest one, it was a decent size. The menu looked really good. The heavy menu is at noon and then they do it lighter menu at night for the memory care to try to get them settled down. The level of care seemed good. The nurses seemed to know their patients."

"Edencrest Kettlestone showed me everything. My main takeaway from the place is that it's too expensive for me. The apartments were very nice. I got to see a one-bedroom and a studio, I saw their exercise facilities, and I had a meal, and it was OK. They had an exercise room and a reading room."

"Holland Farms Senior Living was nice. It was almost brand-new. It was only there for two years or so. The staff members were all nice. They were great. The building overlooked a nice little park in the back with a big pond in the middle. It was good that you are not staring at buildings. They also had walking paths that pass the park. They provide transportation if they want to go to church or somewhere. They also had a library that was connected to the Norwalk Public Library. It looks like somebody from there would bring books in and stuff if you requested them, like once a week or once every couple of weeks. They had rooms to do activities, they had a puzzle room where they could do puzzles and stuff, and play cards if they wanted to. We saw a suite and a 1-bedroom, they were a decent size and they had full size in their rooms too. There's plenty of closet space in the suite, they could have a nice big closet."

"We liked the common areas at the Independence Village of Ames. There was a little chapel, an activity room, a beauty salon, and places that people could sit upstairs and downstairs around the fireplace. They have done a nice job on the upkeep. The woman who did the tour for us was amazing. She has been in constant contact with me throughout the process. There is a garden path or a walking area that is enclosed. Once they're out there, they can't get lost or anything. There is also a beauty shop and some field trips that they had been on. For example, they just took the residents a few days ago to an Iowa Cubs game."
