"We went to Bickford of West Des Moines. The rooms were decent sized. They had their own bathrooms; I liked that. It wasn't like a nursing home. It wasn't huge, but they did have a kitchenette, basically a mini fridge, a microwave, and a sink. They do have an activity director, but I didn't witness any activities. There was a little minibus outside. I talked to the head nurse and their marketing person, they were both nice. It was an older building, but decently kept."

"My mother was at MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan Creek. She went to assisted living. It's the same as where she will be going; the only difference is they did not have a skilled unit. The staff was caring and very attentive. They had a chef there that made meals for the people. Her room was very up-to-date, very nice, and very elderly- friendly. They had activities, but she was not well enough to participate. They had an exercise room, a theater, and a podiatrist that took care of toenails. They had good amenities."

"My sister has moved to Holland Farms Senior Living. We chose it because it's just a very nice, pretty, very clean place. The staff members seem to take good care of the seniors living there. The residents with memory care problems, keep them very active, and they have a lot of activities. They have a very nice courtyard, they have a hair salon, and they do scenic drives every day to get the patients outside."

"I had visited several times over the years. The place was always spotless. It had a very clean and neat rooms. Very large hallways, which was great. You would always see some elderly around. Wither it be playing cards, solving puzzles, or watching a group movie there always seemed to be something going on which is fantastic. I imagine it must get terrible boring without activates running all the time. The rooms where my grandparents stayed were huge. The also provided extremely large bathrooms which is always nice. The staff was always friendly. Every time I went they always seemed so happy to help out. (Of course they are paid to do this, but it was nice nonetheless) Overall the place was great. I always enjoyed visiting and when I end up retiring I would love to live in a place like that. "

"Bickford of Ames was a nice community, it felt good, but we just felt it was smaller. So, we didn't necessarily care for it that much, and it was more expensive also. And so that was something that I guess turned me off. They showed a one-bedroom, but the square foot I felt was too small compared to the other place. The staff was very friendly, very helpful. We checked out the kitchen and the restaurant there. They looked very good. They didn't have two floors, so there were more people crammed into one area, that's what it felt to me with it being just only one floor."

"The staff at McAuley Terrace is perfect, very friendly, very open, and very helpful. The condition of the rooms is great. My mother-in-law is in a studio, which seems to meet all her needs. It's very clean and everything is working in good shape. It's a very open and friendly atmosphere. People approached her immediately introducing themselves and asking about her. They took her in very quickly into their circle. The food is excellent, and she raves about it. They have bingo, arts and crafts, walking, a garden area, bridge club, a pinochle group, an exercise room with equipment, puzzles, church services, a beautician, a salon, they go to the grocery store, and they had a senior prom recently. It's an older facility, which appealed to her. The people were very genuine, and she felt very comfortable. It was the cheapest of the places I visited, and also the best fit for her."

"We tour Martina Place in Johnston Iowa and we actually love the place! My parents are happy since they moved in and I will definitely recommend Martina Place to others. I find Martina Place very nice and accommodating. "

"I cannot say enough about the quality of care and staff at this facility. Mom exceeded our capacity to care for her in our home, and a relative recommended Senior Suites of Urbandale. We spoke with the staff, toured the facility, and made a decision to place her in their Veranda care facility. The staff there, regardless of the hour we visited, was always so very caring to the residents (not just Mom), they treat their residents like their own family. The facility was always neat, clean and the staff were always engaged, whether in caring for or providing activities for the residents. If you're looking for a place for a loved one where you can have peace of mind knowing they're in great hands, choose Senior Suites of Urbandale. For the degree of care provided, they are an exceptional value!"

"The staff is very good with the residents and takes very good care of them. They call me with the slightest issue. It could be cleaner, as my grandfather sat in a room in which he had peed in the corner for about an hour before someone came to help him. The food is very good. My grandpa never complains. He has dementia and lost his wife, and they supported him and made sure he was doing alright the whole time. They contact me at least 1 time a week to make sure everything is ok, and they visit with me to make sure I am doing ok. He always has a nurse or an aide near him. "

"Calvin Community is a small and old facility. The people are very nice and accommodating. However, it didn't have enough activities. My brother needs to be encouraged right now to be as active as possible. They're long established in the neighborhood. It's been there for over 30 years. It is less updated than the newer ones. The rooms were clean and well taken care of. But I think the value for money was less. There's a warm, welcoming personnel. We felt that anybody would be certainly cared for there. It's a church-based community, but I don't know how much the Presbyterian Church is involved now. The people were very kind and welcoming."

"Walnut Ridge was very big, and there were a lot of very nice amenities, but it seemed a little more formal than what we were looking for. The staff was very nice. They had a swimming pool. The apartments were also very nice."

"My Mom, Brother and I went to tour KennyBrook Assisted Living for my Mom and were very happy with what we saw. The staff were very kind, open, and upbeat. The available unit has a cute kitchenette, a decent size living room, a large bedroom with walk-in closet, and a nice bathroom with walk-in shower. They have a dining room serving 3 meals a day with several choices each meal. Several areas for residents to gather and play cards, work puzzles, read, or just talk. A chapel that also poses as a movie theater room once a week for movie nights, a community room for exercising crafts, and games, a private dining area you can reserve for a family party, fitness room, on-site beauty salon and a coffee shop with cookies! There is also a physical therapy room if needed or prescribed by a doctor that insurance covers. They also do off-site activities (that day they went to Fareway and had a Rootbeer Float Social,) and have free transportation within a 15 mile radius, which is awesome for doctor appointments. Their staff is trained on medicine management and their director is also a nurse. They have a doctor visit on site once a week, as well. My mom was very hesitant when we went, not knowing if a retirement community was truly for her, but before we left, she was all ready to sign the papers!! I think it will be a wonderful place for her to spend her remaining years. I am rating the staff and facilities top stars. I am not yet putting a rating for the food, as we have not experienced it yet, however, the menu looked delicious!!!"
