"My mom is staying in Karen Acres Health Care Center. They have several different wings for different care types. They've got one big community room where everybody gathers for their meals, or for any of the activities that they have. They do have a section that's kind of set off to the end that's more of a quiet section. There's sofas and they can sit by the windows. The employees are all very attentive. They're very caring, very personable, and they keep in touch with me as to what's going on with her, and how she's doing. It's a small facility, so they're very well staffed, and everybody is so friendly. Mom participates in some of the activities. She enjoys playing bingo with them. Some of the other activities, she just likes to sit and watch, and compliment everything everybody else is doing."

"My mother-in-law visited and wanted to visit some facilities in our area. On this list was Calvin Community. From the outside it looks like an apartment complex. It has good security at the doors, while it makes sense, it is good for your peace of mind to know security is there and visible. Once inside the look turns more towards that of a hotel. It has a good look, but is slightly more "homey" than high end hotels, which is good. The look is nice and balanced. We didn't get much of a chance to talk to staff or residents, but that is because they were in an activity and we didn't want to interrupt. The rooms were very nice and various options were available. Most of the amenities were pretty standard, but one that stuck out was a garage for vehicles for residents. My mother-in-law loved the idea of not having to sell or lose her car. The facility was very nice and had a lot of the features that my mother-in-law was looking for. While she hasn't decided, she said this is definitely high on the list. "

"The primary thing we liked about Pine Acres Rehabilitation And Care Center was that they have Medicaid beds immediately available. Secondly, just walking in and seeing the seniors that were there, they all looked happy and were enjoying an activity. There's a large open space for eating, playing bingo, watching TV, and doing that stuff as a community. The rooms were bigger than what I had seen in other places as far as Medicaid beds where they have to share a room, and the rooms were brighter and seemed more homey. I met with a social worker who gave me the tour and she was very helpful. She was able to show me a couple of rooms that would be very similar to what my mom would be in. The nursing staff that I saw all looked happy, engaged, and energetic. They had PT and OT in-house, a hairdresser who had a studio there and came in once a week to do haircuts for the residents, a dentist and a podiatrist that came in once a month to see residents who needed that, and transportation to and from appointments. They also had an activity room and a separate eating area for residents to have gatherings with their families. The only thing was I had to initiate most of the contact with the staff."

"You had to pay money in, and we didn't like the location of Deerfield. It was wonderful, and it was a hard thing to say no to. We liked it, but you can't live in two places. "

"All of the employees at Wesley Acres seem to genuinely care about the residents. There are many activities for the residents to do both on and off site, so they are not just sitting around bored all the time. The facility management makes an effort to keep everything up to date, and they have recently been working on a large construction project to modernize the entire place, especially the Alzheimer's wing. The food seems to be good, public and private areas are kept clean, and the nurses are available 24/7 to deal with any problems that may arise. Family members of residents are also able to call nurses as frequently as they like, with any concerns or advise they may have. Since the only assisted living community I have any experience with is this one, I can't really compare it to others in the area, but I can't really imagine how anything could be much better. "

"My mother-in-law is at Union Park Health Services. We live out of state, but they are wonderful with calling us at anytime if there are any slight issues, like weight loss or a doctor’s recommendation to add anything. When she was not eating, they brought in a nutritionist to find out her needs and what she liked. She is gaining weight again, and I guess she is doing better. They are short staffed like most nursing homes, but overall, our experience has been good. "

"The staff at University Park seemed very nice. The people who live there had a very good relationship, were very friendly, and seemed to know one another. It’s all suites since it used to be a hotel. The rooms were all of the same size and shape. It’s kind of small for the price, but I have visited others that were way more expensive. They offer three meals a day. "

"I like this facility because of the rooms. There's one on one side and two on the other side. Each room has window. They encourage residents to come out instead of staying in their rooms which is great. They tried to keep it so that they don't need the bathroom together on one side and the one that does need the bathroom on the other side. The sink is outside the bathroom on each side which I like for infection control. Their food was good. They had two different choices. Their staff had been there a while. Their activities were good. "

"Sunny View Care Center is a small facility. The staff was very helpful. They were very willing and very able to answer questions. They were pleasant. They seemed like they wanted to connect and fill out what the person needed. However, it wasn't quite as neatly kept. Not that it didn't look like they weren't able to do the job, but I felt more comfortable over at the other place. The first thing I walked into was a cafeteria. It was nice. It wasn't dirty. But it was more hectic and congested because it was smaller than the other place."

"My brother has been at Polk City for about 5 years now, he loves the staff and says the food is really good. My brother and his wife joined our brother for a Thanksgiving dinner they said the food was excellent. My brother loves all the activities and we have had no issues with his stay so far."

"My husband was at The Bridges at Ankeny, and he received excellent care. I was very happy with the care, and I was especially happy with their discharge planning because they were very clear about what his needs were and that kind of thing. They have a very nice and wonderful staff. My husband was on soft food, and they had to grind up all the food and everything. He was on a special diet, and as far as I could tell, it was fine. But my husband didn't like having to be on a special diet. His room was private, and it was good. The facility was beautiful, very well kept, and new. I didn't see any activities, and my husband didn't want any. But he did have physical therapy, so that kept him occupied. Medicare paid for this at this point because he came from a hospital."
