Home to points of interest such as Living History Farms, the Buccaneer Arena and Paragon Prairie Tower, Urbandale is a vibrant community with a strong local economy and a range of amenities for older adults. It’s situated just 8 miles northwest of Des Moines and is among the smaller suburbs of the city with about 46,000 residents, including a senior community that accounts for a little over 14% of the population. It promotes high access to health care, making it a suitable option for those managing long-term conditions, and it’s served by a reliable public transportation system to support residents’ independence and quality of life.
For many older adults in Urbandale, assisted living helps ensure access to necessary care services while maintaining as much privacy and independence as possible. These residential facilities offer on-site personal care and wellness services, social and recreational opportunities and daily meals, and some are pet-friendly. The Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey shows that in Urbandale, assisted living residents pay approximately $5,005 per month for care. This is high compared to the state and national averages, but it may be offset by the city’s affordable cost of living.
This guide provides more information on senior care costs in Urbandale and an overview of the benefits and drawbacks of living in this city. It also highlights some local nonprofit organizations and programs that serve older adults in the community.

It’s got a park, a lake, and just about anything that you would want in a retirement community. The staff is just wonderful. Food is very good. We usually just visit. We’re either in the dining room, down in the lobby, up in my friends’ room, or on their deck, so I don’t know about their activities.

I cannot say enough about the quality of care and staff at this facility. Mom exceeded our capacity to care for her in our home, and a relative recommended Senior Suites of Urbandale. We spoke with the staff, toured the facility, and made a decision to place her in their Veranda care facility. The staff there, regardless of the hour we visited, was always so very caring to the residents (not just Mom), they treat their residents like their own family. The facility was always neat, clean and the staff were always engaged, whether in caring for or providing activities for the residents. If you’re looking for a place for a loved one where you can have peace of mind knowing they’re in great hands, choose Senior Suites of Urbandale. For the degree of care provided, they are an exceptional value!

I went to Woodlands Creek Retirement Community. The price was median; it wasn’t the lowest, and it wasn’t the highest there. It was a nice, medium facility. It had transportation for the residents. It also had a memory care unit. Everything was nice. It was in a quiet neighborhood.
The meal area seemed fine with three meals a day. The only drawback on that is the activities room. It was away from the main hall, and kind of a small, isolated area. It didn’t seem like they had many of the activities as some of the other places.
The staff was very friendly and very willing to help. Everybody was very cordial. The rooms for the money were a nice size. The community fee they have is a one time fee; it’s a flat fee, plus like a dollar fifty per square foot (depending on what room you’re going to be in). The level of care is on a point system, which the point system seems a bit high on.
There are pros and cons to it, but it’s not for us. Even though the room was a decent value, my parents personally needed a little bit more than what they had to offer there. The place was clean.

If I could get my mother to move, MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Jordan Creek is the place where I would move her. It was very welcoming. The staff was very knowledgeable and the services that they provided for assisted living were exactly what I felt she needed. All the residents seemed to be happy, too.
My sister and I thought they had beautiful rooms. The one-bedroom appeared to be very adequate. The only downside was that they have a bar seating for the kitchen, and older folks, in my opinion, would have a harder time crawling up on a stool to sit and enjoy that space, but they were a very nice-sized room. They have the accommodation of having the washer and dryer in their own room or somebody to do the laundry for them as well as cleaning services once a week.
When mom visited, she was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to get around. She said the meals were wonderful. She was very surprised at the high quality of the meals. They were very tasty, which is important to her, and if there’s something that she has enjoyed eating in the past, she would just let them know and they’ll prepare it for the group during one of the meals.
They do craft events regularly, religious services, and provide transportation to doctor’s appointments, to local shopping areas or if anyone in the group wants to go someplace. They are just very accommodating. The lady who gave the tour knew what she was talking about. She didn’t pressure me. It was very, very, very pleasant and she knew what an older person is looking for in a facility.

My parents will move into Bishop Drumm Retirement Center. The apartment building that they’re moving into is not ready yet. It was a faith-based decision. We have dealt directly with one staff member, she’s apparently in-charge of bringing in people, and she was amazing. The room has got nice, big windows, very bright, it’s a lot smaller than what they have been used to, but that’s to be expected. They have a maintenance staff who will spruce things up, and whatever they want to do in terms of putting things on the wall, mounting a television, they can do any of that. The staff will add additional outlets if they need them, so they’re very accommodating.

Grand Living at Tower Place was geared toward active seniors. It was beautiful and there’s always something going on. They have several different community areas where staff gather and do crafts. They have a swimming pool, an exercise area, a movie theater area, and a lot more activities. They have very luxurious accommodations. The washer and dryer were included in their room, and they have staff that comes in weekly to do their laundry and clean their apartment. They have adequate bathrooms and just very luxury items. If I could afford it, it’s a place where I would enjoy living. It is top-notch.
The other thing that I liked about there is if one spouse has more care requirements than another, they still share the same room while the staff meets that person’s needs. They have three restaurant-type areas where you order off a menu. It is not to full capacity yet, but once they get closer to full capacity, they’ll open up more restaurants. Then on Friday nights, they have a social hour in a bar-type setting. They also provide limousine service for whatever is needed.
We actually just popped in to take a peek that day. We did not have an appointment, but they were very accommodating in providing us with a tour. If you’re looking at just the basic assisted living care, they came in the cheapest.

What to Consider About Assisted Living in Urbandale
The Iowa Department of Inspections & Appeals regulates assisted living facilities in Urbandale and the rest of the state. This department conducts regular and unannounced visits to facilities to assess the quality of care and services provided to residents. It also investigates reports of noncompliance with state-mandated regulations.
Benefits and Drawbacks of Assisted Living in Urbandale
- Urbandale is among the pricier cities to live in Iowa, but compared to the nationwide average cost of living, this city is relatively affordable. The region’s high cost of living is driven by high housing prices, which older adults may avoid by transitioning to residential care.
- Urbandale has about 262 doctors per 100,000 people versus the national average of 210, promoting access to diverse primary and specialty care services. While there are no hospitals in the city proper, Urbandale’s proximity to Des Moines puts major medical facilities such as MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center and Iowa Methodist Medical Center within easy driving distance.
- Seniors in Urbandale don’t pay state income taxes on their Social Security benefits. Other types of retirement income are taxable, but older adults can claim large deductions to reduce the expense. This may leave more money in the bank for assisted living expenses.
- The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority operates the public transportation system in Urbandale, supplementing transportation services provided in assisted living and helping older adults complete errands and attend medical appointments. It has a half-fare program for those aged 65 and over, and veterans ride for free. It also has paratransit services for those unable to use the regular service.
- Instances of crime are rare in Urbandale, making it a favorable option for seniors considering the Des Moines metro for retirement living. On a 100-point crime index, the city scores well below the nation as a whole with a violent crime score of 13 and a property crime rating of 24.4, indicating fewer occurrences.
- Urbandale’s weather is generally pleasant year-round. Summers are warm with high temperatures in the mid-80s, and while July may be muggy, humidity levels are low throughout the rest of the season. Winters are chilly with low temperatures in the teens. To help residents stay comfortable, many assisted living facilities have individual climate controls in suites and apartments.
