I’ve been a client of Right at Home for a little over a year now. The caregivers that they’ve sent to me seemed very dedicated. They get the work done. They help me out with cleaning, cooking, and just companionship. It’s nice to have somebody I can talk to while they help me with stuff. We go out to the grocery store and help me get around and get the things I need.
The thing I liked most about them is their friendliness. They’re so open to meeting someone new and helping. They’re just good people all around. The caregiver wants me to do something instead of just watch TV. They go, "What do you need? Do you need help doing some of your PT? Do you need groceries? Whatever you need, let’s get it done." They also remind me to take my meds and I need that.
They’re just wonderful people. Karen is my caregiver and she’s amazing. I have sarcoidosis and at first they thought it was cancer and she went with me to my doctors. I was freaking out and she calmed me down and said, "Don’t worry about something that hasn’t happened yet." It wasn’t cancer. It was sarcoid, and she was right. One day, she called her husband on his day off, asked him if he could come over and help me move my TV from one room to the other and he did. That was kind of her, something she didn’t have to do. I was very grateful for that.
The people at the office are very friendly. I got to meet most everyone there and if there’s any issue or anything, I can call them pretty much at any time and they get it resolved. If I’m going to go somewhere and I’m not going to need her, she takes care of it and gets her another patient to take care of for that day. If she’s on vacation or out sick, they jump on it and try to get somebody in for me. Most of the time they can and if they can’t, I make do. I’m so grateful.
They deserve more than a five. They’re very good. A couple weeks ago, I had a fall and I contacted them and let them know I’m in the hospital. I’m not going to be home, and they reached out to Karen. Karen called me just to check and see how I’m doing. You don’t get that from most of these other places.

Financial Assistance for Home Care in Reading, PA
Given the high cost of in-home care, many people use one or more forms of financial assistance to cover the expenses. Below, we explain some of the most common sources of financial help for paying for in-home care. If none of these options are available to you, you can reach out to your Area Agency on Aging or Aging and Disability Resource Center to learn about local resources.
- Long-Term Care Insurance: Long-term care insurance covers expenses related to senior care, including in-home care. Depending on the policy type, beneficiaries may receive a cash payment to use towards long-term care or reimbursement for qualifying long-term care expenses. Note that there are limitations- typically a maximum benefit of $150 per day- and exact coverage terms vary depending on the exact policy, so always check the details.
- Medicare: Medicare does not cover in-home care because it is classified as custodial, or non-medical, care. However, some Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans, which offer expanded benefits, may cover in-home custodial care.
- Medicaid: Medicaid coverage of in-home care varies between different states because it is not a federally mandated benefit. Currently, all states cover some in-home care either through their standard Medicaid or a waiver program. The specific coverage rules are set individually by each state.
- Veterans’ Benefits: The Aid and Attendance benefit is a monthly cash payment that beneficiaries can use to pay for senior care, including in-home care services. To qualify for A&A, Veterans must already receive the VA pension and meet several additional requirements, including needing assistance with the activities of daily living. Contact the Department of Veterans Affairs to learn more.
- Reverse Mortgages:Home Equity Conversion Mortgages (HECMs) are federally insured loans that are available to homeowners age 62 and over. Reverse mortgages allow you to access a portion of your home’s equity in cash, tax free. Many seniors use reverse mortgages to finance their care expenses, including in-home care. Note that although there are no monthly payments due on reverse mortgage loans, borrowers do have to repay the loan once the last surviving homeowner passes away, moves, or sells the home.
