There are many services and programs that are low-cost or free, that enable seniors to enjoy an independent lifestyle in the comfort of their own home, such as help with home modifications, meal delivery services, and more. Weatherization Assistance Program

The Berks County Action Program is a state-funded and federally funded program that assists low-income homes to reduce their energy expenses by increasing the energy efficiency of their homes. Staff provides education on how to reduce consumption of water, electricity and gas to save money. Services offered by the program include energy audits, insulation installation, weatherstripping, repairing doors and windows and cleaning heating systems. Priority is given to seniors on a fixed income that meet the minimum income requirements.

Berks Encore is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of seniors in the Berk county area. It offers free advocacy services and teaches seniors about social security, medical benefits and financial planning. The organization runs health and wellness classes to help seniors effectively manage their personal health goals and remain active. It also operates six senior centers around the city where the elderly can take part in educational and physical activities at no charge. The group also runs a Meals on Wheels program that distributes meals to citizens across the county on a regular basis.

There are two senior centers located in Reading that offer a range of activities to seniors, and there is no charge for attending the activities. Some of the centers offer nutritious meals to citizens attending the activities each day. Activities offered include social events, arts and crafts, fitness classes and language classes.
