The town of Bel Air is the county seat of Harford County, Maryland, and is an outer part of the Baltimore metropolitan area. Bel Air offers the rustic coziness of small town living while being part of a major city. The regional climate delivers warm, humid summers and mildly cold winters separated by moist springs and pleasant fall weather. Bel Air is full of historic charm and is one of Maryland’s 29 designated Arts & Entertainment districts. This designation includes most of the historic downtown, which is filled with galleries and concert venues that host frequent cultural events. There are also many parks and recreation areas nearby. The 2019 U.S. Census population of Bel Air is 10,119, of which 20.6% are 65 years old or over.
Bel Air is close to high-quality medical facilities, and the thoroughly equipped University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center is just outside the town center. Bel Air and the nearby Baltimore City area have numerous home health care services too. Homemaker services average $4,671 per month while home health aides cost $4,957 per month, which is slightly higher than national averages of $4,481 and $4,576 respectively.
Note: Home care cost data was not available for Bel Air, so data for the closest city, Baltimore, was used.
At Caring.com, we’ve compiled a comprehensive directory of every home care provider in the Bel Air area – complete with types of care provided, services offered and reviews from families who’ve actually used the service. Home Instead has been part of my family for approximately seven months. It was the best move I made. My father has been living with me for 10 months. I tried to take care of dad for the first four months by myself, but realized we needed help. I contacted Home Instead and was immediately met with compassionate, professional people. I continue to be impressed with every employee, from the office staff to the aides who take care of my father. The office phone is always answered within the first two rings by an actual person. You will not get a recording asking you to select a prompt. I even had to call one time after hours and the on-call person answered right away. The office staff talk to me as if we have known each other for a long time, which is great. They know me and are familiar with my father’s conditions. The aides who look after my father are great. They interact with him and treat him as if he was their dad. In the beginning the company will take the time to do an assessment and look for aides who will be the right fit for the specific circumstances presented. Additionally, the company actually performs, what I call, unannounced performance evaluations. The Client Care Coordinator will arrive unannounced on any given day to check on their employee/aide at the clients location. Everything Home Instead provides has given me peace of mind and a calm I have not felt in some time. Choosing Home Instead was the best move we made.

I want to preface this by saying that I don’t like to leave bad reviews and I rarely do so. But when it comes to choosing who will be taking care of your elderly parents, someone considering using Always Best Care should be aware that many of the care providers that are sent to your home have very little or no training in senior care. Even in such basic things as putting diapers on your loved one, or knowing how to safely do transfers, which can result in injury if not performed correctly. The woman who we interviewed and who owns the Always Best Care that we used is totally charming when you meet her. She is probably a nice person. But she can be hard to work with and she refused to acknowledge that the people she uses are not trained. And I’m sorry, them saying that they sometimes helped take care of a grandparent does not count as experience or training.
We had been told initially that almost all of the caregivers coming to my parents’ home would be CNAs. This turned out not to be the case. I was even told by one that he had never done this before, but that he would probably be getting some training soon.
My father ended up with a serious head injury and hospitalization from a fall he took while in ABC’s care. I don’t really blame the caregiver, because the injury was caused by a total lack of training and inexperience which was the company’s fault. I blame the company for sending out a stream of people (and there will be many!) who, even though they were nice, didn’t know how to take care of the elderly.
There are other less serious things that we had problems with that I won’t go into. But I will say that my father was easygoing and we were very undemanding people, so it wasn’t as if we were expecting too much.
Currently we are using another provider for our home care, and the difference is tremendous.

The caregiver is very attentive and can cook. They clock in once they get into the home so they can monitor the aides coming and going. The agency provided an initial in-home visit and that’s a good step in making sure that the person they put in the home is a good fit. They’ve been very professional.

My only living aunt is 89 years old and lives in the Baltimore area. Her children are in Texas and California, and it became my responsibility to find in-home caregivers to help her out after she returned home from the hospital. She was very weak and needed assistance after waking for her morning routine, and again in the evenings prior to going to bed. Although I live about two hours from the Baltimore area, I was more than happy to spend time helping her interview and decide upon a service that could help her through her convalescence.Homewatch Caregivers was one of four agencies recommended by the hospital, based on their prior relationships. I interviewed all four and then two additional companies I found in the yellow pages, and decided to sign a contract with Homewatch Caregivers. I thought they were the most prepared during the initial interview process and they asked me and my aunt questions about our expectations, which no one else did. I was impressed with their procedures and how they wanted to partner with the family to provide a successful relationship. My aunt was able to select the caregivers who would come every day to help her with her personal grooming and hygiene (in the morning), and her evening bedtime routine. (During the day she had a neighbor look in on her, so she did not need round-the-clock care.) "Lisa" was the nurse who came every morning at 7:00 a.m. and she stayed till about 11:00 a.m. She formed a very close relationship with my aunt, administering her daily medications, helping her shower and get dressed, preparing breakfast and helping with some exercises that she was encouraged to do to build strength. The evening nurse ("Carolyn") came around 6:00 p.m. and warmed up her dinner, administered evening medication, helped with some light housekeeping chores, and then got her ready for bed. Both women were pleasant and gentle and became very attached to my aunt. This was a very good agency to use, since they seemed to do more than just "screen" their staff. They had continuing education classes that helped the caregivers learn how to bond with their clients and understand that their work is more than providing medications and sticking a plate of food in the microwave. I really appreciated the caregivers being "friends" instead of just paid employees. My aunt needed help for about two months, at which time we began to taper off the help. Both Lisa and Carolyn continue to keep in touch with my aunt, and that is what makes this agency stand out. Their caregivers really do care about the clients.

This includes keeping note of when clients stop answering doors or seem to be in distress during meal deliveries.
Determining Your Loved One’s Need for In-Home Care
Aging can be a difficult process, and loved ones may not always ask for help – often times it’s up to their family to evaluate their need for help around the house. While no two situations are exactly alike, this checklist can help you and your loved ones determine when it’s time to start the search for a home care provider.
Guidelines for Talking About In-Home Care
If you’ve determined that your loved one needs the assistance of a care provider in their home, it may be time for a difficult conversation. Handled correctly, however, this process can bring a family together and ensure that everyone’s concerns are addressed. Use this PDF as a starting point to help the conversation stay as positive and productive as possible.
