Cherry Blossom Cottage is wonderful. I am a 72 year old male who has had two strokes after which I had to find a place to live with help. I have been for four months and have never lived better in my life. I came on a walker and within two months was on a cane and now walk with no assistance thanks to their therapy. The food here is great! When I came here I weighed 155 lbs. I'm now up to 169 and could've feel better. The care givers all are wonderful making you feel you. Very important to them. The activities are fun and educational. They show two movies a week. I hope to live here until my last breath! Rollie

What you can do with Caring
About Cherry Blossom Cottage in Portland, Oregon
John and Sylvia Griffin devised a unique solution to putting their four children through college: open an assisted living facility! As a dermatologist in the late 1980s, Dr. John Griffin treated numerous older adults and realized those who lived alone revealed needs that were not being met, but their requirements were not so severe that they warranted a nursing home stay. At that time, the assisted living concept was in its infancy, so Dr. Griffin and his wife, Sylvia, a registered nurse, decided to start their own retirement option to meet the needs of the aged in their community. Sylvia Griffin took on the building of Cherry Blossom Cottage while her husband John worked at his career as a physician. Before opening, the children even helped with the aesthetics: cleaning, doing yardwork, etc. Established in 1989, the home earned its keep by indeed helping to put the last of the Griffin brood through college, ten years later. Now, daughter Rebecca Meadowcroft runs and co-owns the establishment with her three brothers.
Cherry Blossom Cottage features charming decor and lovely landscaping. The warm, home-like atmosphere is appreciated by the residents, who populate 40 private apartments and enjoy all the basic utilities, including individual temperature control. Beauty and barber shops are right on premise for guest convenience.
"I'm happy that we can provide a needed service and offer a safe, loving environment to our residents", says Ms. Meadowcroft. She also stresses that the administration is able to go above and beyond what other facilities can offer in terms of certain levels of care since the home is family-run and does not have to answer to a parent corporation. Just take a look at the long list of services provided:

We realize families struggle through this process of selecting the right home for their loved ones. Residents' physical needs as well as their emotional well-being are always considered. Ms. Meadowcroft loves that the facility can handle resident support utterly through end of life. Not all retirement options provide care through the end, and it's very difficult for the older person and their families to go through numerous moves. The folks at Cherry Blossom Cottage considers this selection to be the final stop.

Monthly rent is based on the level of personal service needs for each resident. Increases in the level of care are subject to change month to month, without notice and are based on the resident's needs. These needs will be identified during the initial evaluation, quarterly and as needed. Each resident will be given a notice for the yearly rent increase.
When two people are renting an apartment, the resident with the higher level of care pays at the regular apartment price for that level of care. The resident with the lower level of care is priced at the second person rate.
The resident's level of care is determined after a thorough evaluation which determines which services will be performed for the resident, the frequency of those services as well as the duration of the services. This final evaluation assigns a total number of points to the resident. Those points then determine the level of care the resident will be at.

We visited Cherry Blossom Cottage, it's small, not much to offer, and we really did not like the atmosphere there. The tour was fine, we had to view from the outside which is OK, because of COVID, we understand, but for our needs, it didn't meet our needs at all. The rooms were the worst, we saw the rooms from outside looking through the windows, and they're just set up very odd. The bulk of the space was used up by this wall that they have their kitchenette and closet in, which is in the middle of the room, so we didn't like that at all. The staff was fairly new, and couldn't really answer our questions. They could offer more amenities. It's probably a great place if you're looking for a quiet community to place somebody, but that's not what we're looking for. We're looking for a lot of activity. If you're looking for a quiet, homey place where you just want mom to have a meal, maybe a few things going on, and she's in her room most of the time, Cherry Blossom would be fine.

Cherry Blossom Cottage reminds me of a spa. It is wonderful, and the people are wonderful. My mom is in a 1-bedroom, and it’s good. They have really good food. They have everything that you’d ever want. There are all these choices all the time. We’re very happy with them.

We checked out Cherry Blossom Cottage. It started out as a house where a family started providing assisted living care and then, they added on to it several times, so it was like a home that had some long hallway wings to it. It was older and a little bit tired, but the grounds were sort of OK. The staff was very nice, but the rooms were small and older. The issue with that was the main meal of the day was at noon and that would not be a great thing for my mother.

The facility and the staff are wonderful. The building and apartments are clean modern well taken care of and have a warm feel - definitely not institutional. The staff is warm, caring, responsible, and professional. I completely trust them to provide the highest level of care for my father. A wonderful place.

The staff are wonderful to my mom. She is thriving and eating good homecooked meals. At first she didn't know how to deal with assisted living; very confused. The staff are very patient and show her around and help her when she needs extra care. Many thanks to Katy, RN. who has the right touch to help mom be comfortable.

My Mother-in love was at Cherry Blossom for abut 5 years before she passed away. We were very pleased with the cleanliness and help she received. The food is homemade and was very good for the most part. The caregivers and staff were very supportive. We did a lot of research for care centers before we came to Cherry Blossom and found that this place has an excellent reputation from doctors to the UPS man. We highly recommend this place.

My parents moved in to Cherry Blossom Cottage one year ago this month. It was hard for them to leave their own home but they just couldn't manage their own care and couldn't afford in-home care any longer. We interviewed a couple of places and chose Cherry Blossom Cottage. It was the best decision we've ever made. Both my parents grew to love the staff and I appreciated the respect and dignity with which they were treated. A few months after moving in, my mother passed away unexpectedly one night. I don't know what would have happened if my parents had still be living on their own at home. Dad could not have handled the situation. Instead a loving aide was with them, making a horrible event less stressful for all of us. There was a real outpouring of grief and compassion from the staff for Dad for weeks after. When I walk in to visit my Dad now, the staff knows who I am and express a genuine warmth for him. I never feel like they are there to put in their time for a paycheck. You get the impression they are excited to be at work to see their "friends." Dad grumbles about the food but he hasn't to have something to complain about. He enjoys his home and the people there who care for him. I know that I sleep better at night knowing he is safe and comfortable at Cherry Blossom. I will and have recommended Cherry Blossom Cottage to adult children searching for a safe, clean and well-run place where they can place their parents.

My experience with Cherry Blossom Cottage was wonderful. I have the highest regard for their caregivers. They treated my father with such dignity, and they always had a smile on their faces. The actual facility itself was very clean and very "homey." You felt like just sitting down in the front room and relaxing. There were always flowers everywhere, and they were big on music. There were a couple of pianos in the facility, and the residents were encouraged to play whenever the liked, my father included. The food was varied and prepared in accordance with each resident's health, although it was somewhat lacking in seasoning. The staff always had him dressed, shaved, and ready to go out the door when I arrived to take him to an appointment or just for a ride. They were always there and on time when it came to administering his meds or recording his blood sugar. He was very well taken care of, and when he passed away, there were many tears shed, which really surprised me that the employees would get so invested with the residents.

This is an assisted living facility, with no specific memory care, in southwest Portland. On the whole, it's very welcoming"” old, but well maintained "“with artwork on the walls, plants and nice furniture all around. There are places to walk outside, including a big path and patio. Residents sometimes gather and talk out there, too. The rooms are of good size"”all private, without kitchen facilities. There is a common dining room downstairs. The food is not remarkable, just traditional "food for the elderly," such as mashed potatoes. There is an activity director who sometimes invites people to come and sing and play music, or organizes a game of bingo. Residents are also taken grocery shopping and siteseeing. The activities are pretty basic; nothing particularly creative is offered. The staff tries to do their best with care, but when residents call for help, it often takes a while for them to respond. The place is very understaffed, so residents are often forced to hire outsiders to get the kind of care they need. Basically, the place needs to be more organized in the way the care is given and how it is run. The medication management is also important; staff should supervise the medication being taken, and that doesn't always happen here. Residents commonly complain that they are being charged too much for the kind of care and housing they receive here.
