The Best Nursing Home Communities in Tarrant County, TX

"Best: Friendly and capable staff.Worst: Old, rather drab building.The facility appears to have been built about 50 years or so ago. It's very clean but doesn't smell of antiseptic or alcohol as such places so often do.The rooms are small and sometimes there are two residents to a room. The closets aren't big enough for that. The drawers in the built in chest tend to stick. It has a mirror above that's almost shoulder height to me. The bathroom mirror is also mounted quite high up so there isn't a mirror my mom can use from her wheelchair.The facility is easy to find, a church up on the corner with the main street makes an excellent landmark and is the only other thing on King's Court. It's only two minutes to I-820. Turn the other way and downtown Fort Worth is a straight shot at about 15 minutes.Mom has had no complaints with staff but says the food could use improvement. The normal resident diet seems to be heavy on canned and packaged food products rather than produce and fresh meat. Corndogs and other fast food type fare is common on weekends. Through the week the food is classic American; meatloaf, stews and such. Mom is a diabetic and complains that the jello isn't sugar free. She recently told me that a change in the kitchen has improved the food greatly.Since mom has some trouble operating her cell phone, I often have to call her on the back desk phone. This phone is available to reach residents who don't have or can't use telephones. It is often unanswered or answered by residents. However, every time the phone is answered I have been able to reach my mom.She's happy there and has made some good friends including members of staff. They've been very good to her there including shopping for her when she needs something between family visits.The staff certainly seem knowledgable and capable. They're also efficient about taking care of her. Medication is correct and on time and when a trip to the doctor is scheduled they get her there and back without excessive waiting.Overall, Richland Hills is a safe and reasonably comfortable place for mom to live on her budget and get the care she needs as well. "

"Everybody I met at Lexington Place was wonderful. It was a clean atmosphere. Everything was clean and smelled sanitary. I had no problem. We were at the dining hall during lunchtime. It was clean, and the food smelled and looked good. They gave me a long list of everything they do. I thought it was good enough for my mom, and not many places have I felt that. "

"Excellent, wonderful, amazing! Gene Compton and his staff are truly amazing. My father is a resident at Interlochen and his care is wonderful. The staff are my extended family. He receive the activities and exercise he needs."

"I was in rehab over at Gateway Post-Acute Care at Arlington Villa for a month, and it's wonderful. The other side is for assisted living and retirement, which was not that great. The rehab is in a newer area and it's good. The rooms are nice, clean, and just great. It's strictly for post-acute care. They're single rooms. The physical therapy gym is there. You just stay there and it's like being in a hospital except it's not a hospital. They have nurses and you get all your medicine. The staff and the services were excellent. The whole experience was excellent. Everybody's so nice, even the office workers. They speak walking down the hall. The rooms were bright. They've got a little window where you can get fresh air, but they've got big windows as well. It's like a hospital room, only it's bigger. You get a huge bathroom and you can take your wheelchair in. The staff, the nurses, and the aides were wonderful and they did their job. There was a little dining area, but I always ate and stayed in my room. The food was the least impressive part of it. It was not delicious, it wasn't done by a chef, but it was OK. It was down to earth food. I certainly enjoyed the rehab gym. They've got equipment and the therapists were wonderful. They have OT, physical therapy, speech therapy, and memory therapy, all of which were really nice. It was all new where I was, but the other side (Arlington Villa), was old. I went to church at a chapel over on the other side, and I would not want to stay there. I would recommend Gateway to anyone."

"My dad stayed in Manorcare for six weeks before we got him out because they quit funding his Medicare. The care is a little bit better there though and we would have wanted him there but we didn't have the Medicaid approved and there's a waiting list for it. The staff was good. "

"I just finished six weeks of antibiotics infusions for osteomyelitis at this facility. I was very happy with the care I received while there overall. The nurses, doctor and attendants that I had were all friendly and saw to me and my needs really well under very difficult circumstances. There was a major staff shortage while I was there and the facility was pretty much full of patients and residents but the staff did everything they could to see to our needs despite the shortage of personnel. I actually liked the food especially the chicken fried steak. I am very grateful for the care I received while at Downtown Health and Rehabilitation. "

"I toured Trinity Terrace. It was very clean and very nice. They have public parking for their vehicles. The rooms are not too small; they're nice sized. They let you pick out your colors and everything. However, you have to buy in like you're buying a home, and then what you do is like keep it after that, so you still have a monthly payment. They feed you and everything. They provide all the appliances and stuff in the rooms. The person who toured me around was very warm and caring. Everything is great about them."

"I just love Tuskegee Airmen State Veterans Home all the way around. It felt wonderful. My husband did 27 years in the Air Force, and there were veterans there, so I think that is the place where he would want to be. The staff was excellent. As a matter of fact, they're having an open house on October 8th, from four to six, and anyone's welcome to go on tour. The facility is just beautiful. It's huge. They're getting ready to open up another portion of it. Everything is so modern. They can go out and sit in a screened-in area. They can go beyond that and walk around. Everything is gated. So, it's very secure."

"Mom is at Fort Worth Center of Rehabilitation. The place is great and clean, and the environment inside is just really nice. The staff seems to be OK so far. They offer activities for their residents, and Mom played cards one time. The food looks really good, from what I've seen. This was highly recommended to us, and it is close to a hospital; that’s why we chose it for Mom. "

"I was not happy with Hurst Plaza Nursing & Rehab. My husband got pneumonia while he was there. I didn't like it. I don't think they had enough help, but they were doing the best they could. He had no activities at all. They had a room that had windows in it, and there was a whole bunch of people with memory problems looking out those windows. It was an older building, and the value was way too high for what the VA provided. The people I worked with were nice."

"The staff is the crown jewel of this facility. Not the managers or leadership, but the nurses and CNA's, and the PT's! It was clean and well maintained. The interactions with the staff were the best, I did not meet anyone who was not caring and kind. There were no activities other than group therapy. It is a beautiful facility, Food was OK. "

"Pecan Manor accepts a variety of payments including Medicaid which most of these places do not, which I understand. It looks like a nursing facility, which gave us a little set back at first because it was really hard for my two daughters to acknowledge that their father needed to be in a nursing facility. However, the first thing that impressed me was their staff. I went there eight different times before we decided, and I went there sometimes unannounced, but I never once saw anyone who was short-tempered with the residents or any of that. They are extremely pleasant, loving, and smiling. They're caring for my husband physically. Every time I go there, he has been kept clean. Also I rarely walked through the front door with them not hugging me. It's been a good experience given our circumstances. The staff is mostly younger staff and they're loving to the residents. They also have lots of activities like bingo and even for residents who can't really comprehend how to do that any longer, they help them so that they can feel like they're playing. They also have entertainment that comes in for them. "

"I was in Heritage Oaks for a while. The second time, I was there for about three months. I loved it. I had physical therapy, and the staff was really good. They had dominoes, bingo, movies, cards, art classes, and a class where you make jewelry. They also took people out to Walmart or the Dollar Store. I had a room by myself that was pretty big for one person. Every morning, they came and cleaned. The grounds were kept up and big but not really large. You could go out and sit if you wanted to or walk around. "
