"Not All Nursing Homes Are Created Equal
After three years of chemotherapy, my husband lost the ability to stand or walk. Following a 10-day hospital stay, we transferred him to a Plano nursing home highly rated by the state. Unfortunately, our experience didn’t reflect those accolades. While the facility boasted modern amenities like microwaves and refrigerators in each room, the care was severely lacking—hours-long waits for basic needs, inattentive nurses, and a cold, unresponsive leadership team. It was clear—we needed to find a better fit.
Our new priorities were clear: a facility closer to our home in Frisco, one that was clean, but most importantly, one where compassion and care were deeply felt. My son and I compiled a list of 14 nursing homes across McKinney, Allen, and Frisco, and began visiting them.
We knew we’d found something special when we arrived at Stonemere during an ice storm, only to see the Director, Chris, personally delivering meals to residents because several staff couldn’t make it in. That kind of leadership spoke volumes. From that moment, our decision felt right.
Culture always begins at the top, and both Chris and Linda, the Director of Nursing, set the tone for the compassionate care we found at Stonemere. Linda often begins her day at 2 AM—checking in on the overnight staff and ensuring standards never slip. Alongside assistant RNs Tiffany and Reshaan, they foster an environment where warmth is genuine and care is prioritized.
Over time, my husband became completely dependent. He couldn’t eat, move, or even reach water on his own. A sling lift became necessary just to get him into a chair. I spent at least four hours a day, five days a week at the facility and witnessed the care firsthand. The aides were not only attentive but kind—feeding him patiently, moving him gently, and offering reassuring words like, “It’s okay, Papa. I’ve got you.”
I could write pages naming everyone who supported both my husband and me over the course of his 21-month stay. While I can’t list them all, I must thank a few: Teddy, V, Pauline, Denice, Tom, Clarice, Shelter, Anthony, Francesca, Josh, Marilyn, Ketchy, Hope, Benjamin, and of course, Frejus. Your kindness meant more than you’ll ever know.
The meals? Often quite good! I admit I sampled more than a few bites of his chicken fried steak or pork chop when he didn’t finish. The food arrived warm thanks to heated plates, though the drinks could use a larger glass, and the ice cream often didn’t survive long enough to stay frozen. Still, those are small things in the grand scheme.
Stonemere isn’t flawless—no facility is. Staffing challenges, especially for CNAs, can be tough, and occasional oversights happen. An oxygen line might not be adjusted quickly, or meal delivery might lag. Holiday and weekend coverage isn’t always ideal. But what sets Stonemere apart is their response—they listen, adapt, and strive to improve.
No nursing home is perfect, but choosing the right one depends on what matters most. For us, compassion, dedication, and human warmth made all the difference. We didn’t just make a good choice—we made the right one."
