Harrisburg is a family-friendly community that’s been ranked as one of the nation’s most livable cities and best places to retire. Pennsylvania’s state capital is home to 49,271 residents, including 5,100 seniors. Local families have easy access to popular attractions like Hersheypark. The area is home to several nationally ranked and high-performing medical centers as well as a number of nursing homes and long-term care providers.
Skilled nursing facilities cater to individuals who have advanced medical needs and require specialized rehabilitative services. Many of these services are available in assisted living facilities or through home health care agencies on a more limited basis. These alternatives may be appropriate for individuals who don’t need 24-hour monitoring and can live independently most of the time. They cost about half as much as the $10,311 charged by local nursing homes.
In this guide, you’ll find information about average nursing home costs, local providers and community resources that can help you find the most appropriate type of care for your needs.

We toured The Campus of the Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg. We only met with one person, but the receptionist when you came in was very, very nice. We had to sign in and take our temperature, and then sign two books: one for our temperature, and one for just visiting the place. We met with the admissions director and she also was very lovely. When we left, we didn’t have to take our temperature, but we had to sign out. The facility is beautiful. I mean, the grounds are well kept and landscaped very nicely. My mother-in-law is going to get a private room, but most of the rooms are semi-private. So we looked at a room. We didn’t have a chance to get into the single room, but we’re going to go back there after we finish some paperwork. My grandmother was there for almost five years. We like the location. It’s not far from us at all.

My mom is in Spring Creek Rehabilitation and Health Care Center. She is not happy there. The people are fairly nice, but she has had some negative interactions with one or two members of the staff and I believe that staff was let go. That was kind of a bad experience, but for the most part, the staff is nice. I don’t know if they’re understaffed, but there have been many times when she wasn’t able to get out of bed herself and she had soiled herself. She would lay in bed for hours before someone would come in and change her, so that was a big issue. I would rate the facility about a five or six out of ten on cleanliness.
One of my mother’s biggest issues is with the food services. They get like a little menu to pick what meals they want for the day, but she says on a daily basis, it is incorrect, so she doesn’t get the meals that she ordered and she is very dissatisfied with the food. She describes it as pretty much awful and doesn’t eat a lot of it, so she has to spend what little money she has remaining from her Social Security. She goes to the vending machines and gets food, then my brother and I bring her groceries. She has a grocery list for us and we spend between $50 and $75 every time we go visit her, bringing her food.
Her room is on the smaller side, especially when the resident is in a wheelchair, which she is. I don’t have a ton of other places to compare it with, but I just know when we’re in there, you kind of have to step out of the way for her to be able to maneuver around. I guess they get cleaned frequently, but usually, when I go in, I have wipes and other things that I clean up little things on the floor and the bathroom and stuff like that. The smell isn’t great.
A lot of places are understaffed, not just nursing homes, so on one hand, I am sympathetic to it, but on the other hand, it’s where they live. It’s not just the store or restaurant they’re visiting. They should try and hire more people and make cleanliness, sanitary type issues, and food a priority and just have more programs and things for the residents to do. It was shut down for so long because of COVID that they couldn’t even have visitors and that was so, so sad for them. Now that things are back open, it would be nice for them to have a little bit more to do in there. There are not a ton of planned activities or events or things like that.

Homeland Center was horrendous. It was dingy and very dark, and first impressions were very unfavorable. The facility section that my dad would have been in was one hallway. The room he would have been in had a view of a white brick wall because I pulled open the curtains and I saw a brick wall. The room was very dark and dismal. The space that is allowed for the residents was minimal to the point where I looked outside on the terrace to see what the outdoor section would be like, and it was extremely small. You were looking almost at a barrier, because they had to build a high fence, so there was just no view at all.
I felt that every question I asked was met with, "Well, not in this section." I walked out and quite frankly, my husband and I agreed we wouldn’t put a dead dog in there. When people said it’s lovely, it’s not the section we were shown nor was the section he would be allowed to go in. You enter a lobby and then you have to take an elevator. There’s no welcoming feeling at all. On the second floor, there was a hallway where the residents gather and live, and it’s very confined and very depressing. Walking through it, it felt very institutional and very dated. There’s very limited opportunities. I did not see a flow for anything to happen that would be beyond what I’m familiar with in other places. I would never recommend it to anyone.
My father would’ve needed skilled care there, and he was gonna be long term. I’m sure Homeland comes highly recommended, but I don’t think it’s the area that we saw. When I asked to see that, we were not permitted. So, when I’ve heard positive things, it’s probably truthful on another wing, and I didn’t have preview to that. I only know what I saw.

My husband moved into Messiah Lifeways. It’s a very caring place. The care that he’s gotten has been personal and good. In the nursing facility, there’s a lot of attention given to the individual, and many people are involved with that. The food is very good. My husband has gained 15 pounds. So right now, we’re trying to limit the amount he takes in by cutting in half the starches and the dessert portion. His room is comfortable. He is in a single room. It’s the size of a double, and he has plenty of room himself for his belongings. A bed, a chair, and a bureau were provided. We have provided the rest. My husband is usually cleaned regularly. The laundry is done there for him, and they even label his belongings. So he is kept in good shape. The facility is not brand new, but it’s adequate.

My mom is at VibraLife – Mechanicsburg. It’s a fairly new facility. The nurse-to-patient ratio is very good. It’s a good number. They have COVID in the building, so now the patients are in their rooms primarily. They don’t have them meeting in places. But sometimes those with memory care disorder (like my mother), they bring them to areas, so they could keep a close watch on them. As far as I can tell, she is getting really good care. She got a private room because they didn’t have any other available at the time, and they have not moved her. They have activities, but they’re not doing them right now because of COVID. The PT and OT come to the rooms to do it. They have a small dining area where my mother can sit and eat or they bring it to her room.

My husband was there for rehab and I thought it was a really nice place, but I thought they were a little shorthanded. The food is better there though and they had more activities and parties. They had a lot for the residents to do. They had a salon, a workout room, and an outdoor place. It was very clean though and it was only 25 minutes away from me.

My dad was at Kinkora Pythian Home for rehab. It was a good experience considering the time that we were in and the shortage of staff. We don’t have any real complaints other than when you go to a rehab center that’s also a nursing home, the rehab is good, but then they put you in a wheelchair for the rest of the day. It’s not really rehab to my expectations, because you’re there to get your balance and to be walking more than sitting in a wheelchair the rest of the day, and this does not facilitate that. However, he’s doing very well.
The people there were amazing. They were one of the most caring and loving staff I’ve been around in a long time. The first night my father was there, he was having major tremors. They called and they were very concerned about it, and asked if we would maybe consider coming down and being with him. Before we even got there, the 3:00 to 11:00 nurse called me personally on her way home because she was so concerned about my father and what he was going through. To me, you don’t find too many people that do that kind of thing, and I was very impressed with that.
My dad had no complaints about the food, and lots of times he said it was good. They could do a little better with fresh fruits, though. Activities could have been a little bit more, but of course, they are just now opening up out of COVID. So, you can’t just judge it on the way things used to be. They haven’t gotten back their volunteer programs yet. They played bingo twice a day. At one point, they did Halloween hats. They had a couple of COVID cases while we were there, so activities perhaps weren’t as it should be.
The building itself was very clean. You would not smell that urine kind of smell when you walk down the hall. I was impressed when I would go in because my dad’s bed was always neatly made. They have personal covers for each resident, so it’s not just a white bedspread. They all had warm blankets on their bed. I was impressed with that.
The social worker was exceptional. She was very helpful in any way possible. The financial person was the same. It was really a good experience. I would say it was a better experience than I expected.

My mother is in the skilled unit currently. She was in quarantine for a little bit, but she is out of quarantine now. I can bring her stuff and I may be able to see her room, but I’m not going to be able to go inside of it. From the outside, I might be able to see it. The facility itself is quarantining the residents from the outside. So far, the atmosphere seems to be positive. If I suggest an activity that my mother likes, even if I mention it second hand, they say that they can get those things for her. I want to ask the staff about the activities; that’s something I’m not sure at the moment what they’re doing. I know my mother is doing activities on her own like coloring and crossword, but I don’t know if they need to schedule an activity with her at the moment. There is a lot I don’t know about the facility as of yet. However, I feel like my mother is being taken care of. I feel like there is some decent communication and positive interactions with my mother.

My mother was at Golden Living for 2 years and the stories are horrendous. Needless to say, I had to take her out due to her face being scratched and no one was available to tell me how it happened. She was punched various times, and her thumb was fractured supposedly by another resident. Here again, no one could tell specifically what happened or how. Some of the aides and nurses were very helpful, but often had to wait a long time for someone to be available to speak with.

Financial Assistance for Nursing Home Care in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Many seniors and their families use some form of financial assistance to help them pay for nursing care. The main options available are Medicare, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. These programs can be complicated, especially when it comes to benefit terms. Below, we give a brief overview of how these programs may be used towards paying for skilled nursing care.
- Medicare: Medicare will typically cover all skilled nursing costs for the first 20 days of one’s stay in a nursing home and a portion of the costs until day 100. After 100 days in a skilled nursing facility, Medicare will not cover any part of the cost of the stay. While this is adequate when short-term care is needed, those in need of long-term care will need to either pay out-of-pocket or use another source of financial assistance.
- Medicaid: Medicaid covers most of the costs of living in a skilled nursing facility for those who qualify. Care, room, and board are covered with no time limit, but residents may be charged for extras like specially prepared food or cosmetic services. Medicaid eligibility standards are strict and complex, so not all seniors are eligible for Medicaid benefits.
- Veterans Benefits: Veterans receiving a VA pension may also be eligible for the Aid and Attendance benefit administered by the VA. Aid and Attendance is a monthly allowance that beneficiaries may use to pay for their long-term care, including skilled nursing care.
If these options aren’t available to you, check if your loved one has long-term care insurance or contact your Area Agency on Aging to ask about any local financial assistance programs for seniors.
